Chapter 220: Chapter 220: The One Thing I Don’t Lack is Money

Six said, "Fairy Sister, I’ll miss you."

That night, Naomi Kenway slept fitfully. Four people were crammed into one bed: Naomi on the outside edge, Ian Shaw in the middle, Mona against the inner wall, and Six at the other end.

It wasn’t because the bed was crowded; something was weighing heavily on Naomi’s mind.

The room was unbearably stuffy, and the small fan hanging from the ceiling did nothing to help. She rolled over, got out of bed, grabbed a flashlight, and went out into the courtyard.

The night was dark and still, and the air was instantly cooler. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Her hearing was sharp, and she picked up the sound of a shrill argument coming from the back room.

"What’s the point of all that studying?! She’s just going to get married off anyway! I swear, you’ve all lost your damn minds! You just want to bleed me dry, don’t you? You think it’s easy for me to earn money?! She’s a cripple! If she goes out, people will just laugh at her. She’s better off staying home and doing chores!"

Another voice, choked with sobs and full of helplessness, replied, "Six loves school so much. How can you be so cruel and not let her go? She’s your daughter! How can you not feel for her at all?! She’s suffered so much her whole life. Have you forgotten her leg is crippled because she protected you from a snake on the mountain when she was a child? She never once complained, and you still don’t care about her?! She’s my only daughter... the only daughter I have left..."

"It’s your fault for not giving me a son! If Six were a boy, I’d sell everything we own to send him to school! Now shut up! Keep this up and I’ll beat you to death!"

...

Naomi felt even more frustrated. She knew she shouldn’t meddle in another family’s business, and that there was nothing she could do to help.

Then, a jarring crash rang out—the clatter of pots and pans hitting the floor—followed immediately by Joelle Lynch’s agonized screams and cries for help.

Naomi couldn’t stand it anymore. She first went to wake the cameramen sleeping in the courtyard.

The door was ajar. Through the crack, she could see a horrific scene. Felix Jacobs had a broom raised high, beating his wife without any regard for the fact that she was still recovering from childbirth.

The swaddled Silas Jacobs was startled awake and began to wail.

Naomi’s eyes instantly reddened with fury. She hated this kind of scum—scum just like Jackson Kensington.

The shrill argument still echoed in her ears. In a daze, Naomi recalled her childhood and the countless fights between her mother and Jackson Kensington. Jackson’s favorite weapon was the silent treatment. After every argument, he would put on a cold expression and refuse to speak, shamelessly exploiting her mother’s love for him.

Naomi had thought about it so many times. ’If I could go back to when I was little, if I could tell Mom to her face that Jackson Kensington was a scumbag... a scumbag who kept a mistress and an illegitimate daughter on the side, a scumbag who recklessly squandered his wife’s fortune! What would Mom have done?’

She had been so timid as a child, just clutching her stuffed rabbit and watching in terror as she let her mother be bullied...

THUD! With a muffled thump, Felix Jacobs clutched the back of his neck. An excruciating pain shot through it. Unable to withstand the agony, he slowly collapsed to the ground, glaring daggers at his assailant.

She held a broom identical to the one he’d been using and looked down at him with cold eyes, as if gazing upon an insignificant ant.

"I’ve been putting up with you for a long time, you disgusting scumbag."

Felix Jacobs shrieked in pain. "You—AAAGH! I’m going to kill you! I’m going to sue you! I’ll make you pay until you’re bankrupt!"

Naomi helped Joelle onto the bed. Thankfully, she had arrived in time; Joelle had some bruises on her arms, but no critical injuries.

Hearing Felix Jacobs’s yelling, Naomi curled her lip in disdain. "Go ahead and sue. The one thing I’ve never been short on is money. Besides, your pathetic life isn’t even worth the price of one of my purses."

Felix Jacobs had just started to get up when he was shoved back to the ground, this time by several tall, burly cameramen. He was a classic bully who preyed on the weak and feared the strong. Seeing the situation, he stopped struggling completely and just started fawning over them with a smile and a stream of pleasantries.

Silas Jacobs seemed to have tired himself out from crying and, without a care in the world, had fallen back asleep.

Naomi went back to her own room, found some liniment for bruises, and applied it to Joelle’s injuries.

Joelle Lynch’s hair was disheveled and her eyes were red, as if she had cried all her tears out. Still, she managed a smile for Naomi. "Thank you so much for that, Little Sis Kenway. Otherwise... I really don’t know what I would have done..."

Naomi sighed. "This isn’t the first or second time he’s been violent like this, is it?"

Joelle Lynch fell silent.

Naomi knew the answer. "What are you going to do?" she asked.

Joelle seemed lost as well. "If it were you? What would you do, Little Sis Kenway?"

"If it were me, I’d divorce him and take him to court."

Joelle seemed numb. "Divorce..." She shook her head, her expression once again growing lost. "Where would I go after a divorce?"

It seemed as if her long years in this environment had completely broken her spirit.

"What about your parents’ family? Have you told them? Do they not care?"

Sorrow filled Joelle Lynch’s eyes, and she forced a weak smile. "The mindset here is very old-fashioned and traditional. They wouldn’t let me get a divorce. And then there are the children... They’d say I’m being selfish, that I have to endure it for the children’s sake..."

"That’s absurd!" Naomi said. "Is that what you think, too?"

After a moment’s hesitation, Joelle slowly shook her head. "I want to live for myself for once, too. But I don’t think I have any way to support my children... I have no confidence that I can give Six a better life..."

"I can help you. I own a lot of stores. If you’re willing, I can arrange a job for you."

Tears welled in Joelle Lynch’s eyes, but she still shook her head. "I don’t know how to do much... I can’t use a computer... and it would be too much trouble for you..."

"You won’t need a computer. And for me, this is no trouble at all."

Joelle got off the bed and knelt down, bowing her head. Naomi quickly pulled her up. "Don’t do that. There’s no need. Actually, you might not believe me, but..." Naomi’s expression faltered, and she looked dazed. "...I often see a shadow of my mother in you. She had so much, but she was still unhappy. Her entire life was a lie. Her marriage was a huge sham, and I couldn’t save her..."

Joelle gently hugged Naomi. Her gentleness was the spitting image of Rose Kenway’s. "You’ve been through so much. I think your mother would be so proud to have a daughter like you."

Suddenly, Ian’s voice came from the courtyard, calling for his mom.

Naomi stood up. "I’m going back to Veridia tomorrow. You take care of things here first. I’ll leave you my number, and in a couple of days, I’ll arrange for someone to come get you."

Joelle thanked her again and again.

"And what about him? What are you going to do?" Naomi was referring to Silas Jacobs.

"He’s my child, my own flesh and blood. I really don’t want to leave him behind, but the Jacobs Family would never let me take him with me..."
