Chapter 87: I refuse!

"Let’s see," Vacuse frowned as he studied the battlefield very well. He noticed the difference between the constructs and what makes them move. "Do you think I can push my mouth out of the window?"

Harkon stiffened. "What are you trying to do, Lord Vacuse?! You can’t want to stick your hand out of the window this time when the battle is like this!

"My Lord, leave everything to the Captain!"

Vacuse only frowned. "Keep still, Harkon. I’m trying to help here. If you watch closely, you’ll see that the constructs that are bigger used thicker strings than the one that is smaller.

"I guess the poison dulls the senses. That way, nobody noticed the smaller constructs. They are busy fighting the main ones. If we can cut the strings in two, we will help them a lot."

Harkon frowned. "Cut the strings in two? All the strings? From here? How can we do something like that.... Lord Vacuse, don’t tell me you are trying to get out there."

Harkon’s voice ended on a cold note, and his eyes narrowed like spears as he looked at his Lord, his body moving subtly to block him.

Vacuse smiled. "Well, I’m the Void Soulbearer. I should be able to pull it off."

He turned to the window and pressed his right hand against it. A force stopped his hand cold, but he narrowed his eyes and pressed harder, and with a small fizzling sound, his hand passed through even as the force remained present.

"Look at that! We can interact with the outside while the inside can’t interact with us!" Vacuse smiled.

Then he narrowed his eyes, drinking in all the sight of the battlefield, taking in all the strings that he wanted to cut. "Let’s see how Rith’s teaching goes."

He raised his hand, palm up, and a small ball of dark energy appeared above his hand. And then around it, more threads began to appear, curling into each other.

"Here goes!"

Vacuse released the threads, and they lashed out. Up to thirty of them cut the air with razor sharpness. They looked like the wrong rain in the air as they twisted.

Whim!

Silver light suddenly lit up the air in different locations, and a chiming sound of bells breaking lit up the air. Strings snapped, shattering, and the small constructs fell to the ground, their glow dulling.

Vacuse smiled. "Well then!"

Serenthar, who had been swapping places with his constructs, suddenly faltered. He swayed, his face darkening as he realized that all of his small constructs were down. "What the.. !!"

He spun and saw small threads in the air, intertwining with the ones he was using for his large constructs, trying to snap them. He traced it to the carriage, and his face turned chilly. "It’s you!"

He began to move toward the carriage, but Captain Mera was coming at him. Serenthar gritted his teeth. "I think I’m finally going to get serious!"

Without missing a beat, he swapped places with one of the constructs.

Captain Mera’s punch slammed into the construct from the back, throwing the two of them forward with a screeching sound. The upper body of the monster twisted around, and its hand, turning white hot, dug into her shoulders.

The purple light projection covering her body cracked from the force, but no harm came to her. She smiled, and her hand whipped up. She gripped the construct’s hands with her own, and then she began to bend it.

Bang!

The force she used was so overpowering that the ground beneath them shattered, and the metal construct began to creak where she held it.

Runes flickered wildly, and she brought the monster closer to her as if she wanted to embrace it.

She opened her mouth wide.

And purple energy converged into a tiny dot in her mouth, glowing hot with intensity, bringing an aura of danger that the construct seemed to sense.

It tried to get out of her embrace, but she was holding on with all she had, and then....

Boom... tZOon!

The energy beam shot out of her mouth with a booming, piercing sound that punched through the sound barrier. It hit the construct with such force that it melted through its head and half of its upper body in one go.

The construct’s stump fell to the ground without any movement.

Captain Mera straightened. And when she looked at the battlefield once again, she saw that her men were making quick work of the rest of the constructs.

Vacuse had lifted the poison that was affecting them.

Meanwhile, when Serenthar changed places, he appeared in the midst of Dragon Guards Soulbearers. All of them fire Soulbearers.

That’s also one thing about Soulbearers fighting together in a group or as a team. Soulbearers with similar aspects would stay together.

Like those with fire or mind control or venom users.

The one that Serenthar appeared in the midst of was that of fire Soulbearer teams, and they were on the verge of blasting the construct with fire when he switched places.

Fire rained down in torrents of orange waves that sucked all the air around as great heat enveloped Serenthar.

The heat scorched the ground and the air, but when it cleared, they didn’t see burnt flesh as they expected to see. They were met with a cocoon made of silver strings.

Serenthar had covered himself just in time.

Suddenly, the cocoon parted, and Serenthar appeared with an angry look on his face. He sneered. "You C-ranked bastards always bite more than they can chew!"

His hand raised, and strings poured down his hands like rain. Unlike the other strings that curled and twisted, these new strings pierced forward like arrows and shot through the Soulbearers like arrows.

Tearing through flesh and bones as easily as if it were paper.

The bodies fell to the ground, but Serenthar was already twisting away from his position, avoiding an arrow that glowed with corrosive green light.

All of his constructs were down.

"Surrender, Serenthar! This is my invitation to you!" Captain Mera shouted.

Serenthar only gave a small smile. "I refuse!"
