The Spoiled Young Lady Who Married a Military Officer-Chapter 143 - 141: Chen Zhengnian Comes to Apologize
Her fair fingers unfurled and clenched again. Lu Xiao’s broad palm interlaced with hers, silently comforting her.
Lu Xiao, of course, knew his limits. After they were finished, he kissed the corner of her teary eyes.
She asked him in a low voice, "Are you satisfied?"
Su Tang called him a bastard.
The man chuckled and said nothing more. He pulled the blanket over her and held her as he fell asleep.
’So what if he was a bastard? He wasn’t a bastard to others, and it was perfectly natural to be one to his own wife.’
The next day, when Su Tang came back from the hospital, she made a special trip to the nurses’ station to borrow a comprehensive first-aid manual from a few of the junior nurses.
’If she was going to teach Lu Xiao, she couldn’t just do it verbally. She had to have a textbook, right?’
Book in hand, Su Tang had just arrived home when she heard Mr. and Mrs. Lu’s voices from inside. It sounded like Chen Zhengnian’s voice was there, too.
"Chen Lü, what are you doing here?"
Su Tang’s gaze was a little cold as she stared at Chen Zhengnian.
’Yesterday it was his sister causing trouble. Is it his turn today?’
Chen Zhengnian also seemed to notice that Su Tang’s attitude toward him was somewhat cold and distant.
He stood up and looked at Su Tang.
The hard lines of his face made him look very imposing.
’But Su Tang wasn’t afraid. She wasn’t easily intimidated, so why would this faze her?’
"Doctor Su, please don’t misunderstand. I came today specifically to apologize to you on Chen Man’s behalf."
"I’m very sorry about what happened yesterday. I didn’t know she would come and say those things to you."
Chen Zhengnian’s attitude seemed much more sincere now; after all, because of Chen Man, he had nearly been reprimanded by his superiors.
The things Chen Man said were tantamount to roasting him over an open fire. So, after the housekeeper took her back, he gave her a fierce scolding.
He had come to offer a personal apology today, especially since Chen Man had only come looking for trouble with Su Tang because of him.
"Chen Lü, there’s no need for any more apologies. I already received Chen Man’s apology letter yesterday. That letter is now posted at the entrance to the barracks."
"As for anything else, I don’t think there’s anything more for us to talk about. I made it very clear to your cousin that our relationship is simply that of a doctor and patient."
"I don’t know how she interpreted it, but she misunderstood me. I hope nothing like this ever happens again."
After Su Tang finished speaking, Chen Zhengnian’s expression remained cold and unreadable, but a hint of embarrassment could be seen.
’After so many years in a high position, he’d only ever been on the receiving end of flattery. When had he ever had to stand and take criticism from someone?’
For Chen Zhengnian, this was somewhat humiliating, but what Su Tang said was true.
If he hadn’t mentioned Su Tang so often at the sanatorium, he wouldn’t have brought so much trouble upon her.
After a moment of thought, Chen Zhengnian nodded.
"Rest assured, Doctor Su. Something like this will not happen again."
After saying this, he gestured for the guard behind him to place the supplements he had brought on the table.
"This is just a small token of my apology. Please accept it."
As soon as he finished speaking, Chen Zhengnian was about to leave, but Su Tang reached out to stop him.
"I can’t accept your things. Please take them back."
Su Tang’s attitude remained just as firm.
Chen Zhengnian glanced at her and finally relented, taking back the things he had brought.
Just as Chen Zhengnian was walking out the door, Lu Xiao returned.
"Chen Lü? What a rare guest."
Lu Xiao’s gaze suddenly turned sharp as he looked at Chen Zhengnian.
When their eyes met, one could feel sparks CRACKLING in the air.
"Regarding yesterday, I apologize to you both on Chen Man’s behalf."
The whole affair was started by Chen Man, after all. She was the one who insisted on provoking them, causing such a mess.
"Chen Lü is certainly considerate of his cousin. To even come and apologize in person for her... how thoughtful."
Lu Xiao’s words were pointed, and Chen Zhengnian naturally understood his meaning.
However, he said nothing, simply giving a slight nod before leaving.
By the time he returned to the sanatorium, Chen Man was already waiting there.
Upon seeing Chen Man, the expression on Chen Zhengnian’s face was very unpleasant; one could even say it was tinged with disgust.
Chen Man hurried to follow him, calling out "Cousin!" from behind.
"Cousin, I only went over yesterday to tell her to stop pestering you! I didn’t expect to cause so much trouble. I know I was wrong, I really do! Please don’t ignore me, okay?"
Even after she said this, Chen Zhengnian didn’t stop walking. Chen Man continued to beg pitifully behind him.
But it was clear Chen Zhengnian no longer wanted to speak to her.
"Cousin, after all our years together, are you really going to send me away?"
It seemed that this sentence finally got a reaction out of Chen Zhengnian.
He turned around and looked at Chen Man.
"What else? Should I keep you here to cause more trouble for me? Haven’t you caused me enough of a mess already? If I let you stay here any longer, I won’t even be able to keep my job."
After saying this, Chen Zhengnian raised his hand and signaled for the guard beside him to take Chen Man away. He didn’t want to see her for even another second.
Chen Man kept begging pitifully, but she knew that once Chen Zhengnian made a decision, it couldn’t be easily changed. This time, she had truly gone too far.
But in her heart, she was deeply resentful.
’On what grounds was Chen Zhengnian so humble with Su Tang?’
’Why did Su Tang get everything she wanted?’
’All she did was say a few words to her, make a little joke.’
’And her husband made her write an apology letter that was now posted at the barracks entrance for all to see, humiliating her.’
Of course Chen Man was resentful. Not only was she resentful, she also deeply hated Su Tang.
She even blamed Su Tang for all the humiliation she had suffered today.
If Su Tang were here, she would probably lament what a huge load of undeserved blame had just been dumped on her.
News that Chen Zhengnian had sent Chen Man away reached Su Tang’s ears within a few days.
It was Wang Xinxin who had heard about it from someone else.
This was because Chen Man had to pass through the commune where she was stationed when she left.
She had seen Chen Man and even had a war of words with her.
Of course, Chen Man was no match for the quick-witted and sarcastic Wang Xinxin.
"She really shot herself in the foot. Talk about trying to cause trouble and only making things worse for yourself. Who told her to go picking fights? If she’d just behaved, she could have stayed here with her cousin."
Wang Xinxin said this while chewing on a cornbread bun.
Su Tang smiled but said nothing. However, neither of them expected that a few days later, it would be Wang Xinxin who would clash with Chen Zhengnian first.
Wang Xinxin was getting better and better at her job at the commune, and everyone had a good impression of her. After all, the young woman was witty and humorous, and she was also a down-to-earth, hardworking person.
It’s just that they had never seen her fiery side—especially not directed at the one person nobody dared to provoke, Chen Zhengnian.
