The Snake God with SSS Rank Evolution System-Chapter 159: What We Take, What We Leave
Adam opened his mouth to respond to Lilith’s pouty defense of her honesty, but before he could form words, a familiar voice erupted directly into his mind—loud, enthusiastic, and thoroughly impatient.
’ADAM! Are you two DONE yet?! I finished cleaning up all the bandits out here AGES ago! There were so many of them, it was FUN, but now I’m BORED and you’re taking FOREVER! What are you even DOING in there?!’
Adam winced slightly at the volume, rubbing his temple. "Ignis says she’s done with the bandits outside and is bored waiting for us."
Lilith’s pout transformed into a small, knowing smile. "Ah. The little firecracker grows impatient. How... expected."
Adam projected his thoughts back through the mental link, keeping his tone calm. ’We’re almost done in here. Got some prisoners to release. Just wait a little longer.’
’Fiiiiine,’ Ignis’s mental voice came back, sulky but acquiescent. ’But hurry up! I wanna see what’s in here!’
Adam shook his head, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "She says fine, but she wants to see what’s inside."
Then the system notifications scrolled across his vision, and he blinked.

Adam’s eyebrows rose slightly. "Huh. That’s... a lot."
Lilith tilted her head. "More notifications?"
"Yeah. The bandits Ignis just finished off—forty-three of them. Gave me enough to level up twice." Adam flexed his fingers, feeling the familiar surge of increased strength settling into his muscles. "Not bad for cleanup duty."
Silvie’s expression darkened as she spoke, her voice tight with a mixture of disgust and grim duty. "There’s another holding area. Deeper in the caves. We found it while searching for supplies." She paused, her jaw tightening. "There are humans there. Prisoners like us—but some have been... violated. Others were being prepared for sale as slaves alongside us."
She spat the last words like poison, her earlier gratitude momentarily overshadowed by raw revulsion. "These bandits are filth. Absolute filth."
Adam’s expression didn’t change, but his eyes hardened slightly. "I see."
Silvie took a breath, visibly steadying herself. "We’ll give them food. Supplies. Whatever they need to survive." She met Adam’s gaze, and there was something almost defiant in her expression—as if expecting him to question her decision. "I know what you’re thinking. We’re elves. They’re humans. After everything humans have done to us, why would we help?"
She shook her head slowly. "But they’re prisoners too. They didn’t choose this any more than we did. And if we abandon them now... we’re no better than the people who put us in cages."
Adam studied her for a long moment—the fire in her eyes, the way she held herself despite exhaustion and grief, the absolute certainty in her voice. There was something almost... familiar about it. A dignity that refused to be broken.
’She’s got spirit,’ he thought, a flicker of approval crossing his features. ’Barely escaped slavery, just watched her people die, and she’s still worried about doing the right thing for humans. That’s... actually kind of impressive.’
Out loud, he simply nodded. "Good call. Make sure they get enough to travel." He paused, then added, "You’re handling this better than most would."
Silvie blinked, caught off guard by the unexpected praise. A faint flush touched her cheeks—barely visible beneath the grime—and she looked away quickly. "I... it’s just what’s right. That’s all."
Lilith’s crimson eyes flickered toward Silvie, catching something in the elf’s expression that made her inner predator sit up and take notice. The way Silvie’s gaze lingered on Adam. The faint flush that had crept across her cheeks when he praised her. The slight breathlessness in her voice when she called him "Savior."
’So this is how it starts,’ Lilith thought, her mental voice cool and amused despite the possessive heat curling in her chest. ’A rescued maiden, grateful and vulnerable, looking at her hero with those big, earnest eyes. She doesn’t even realize it herself yet. But she’s falling. Falling hard.’
The realization was... irritating. Not threatening—nothing about this fragile elf could threaten Lilith’s position—but irritating nonetheless. Like discovering a small, persistent insect had found its way into her chambers.
’I’ll need to monitor this. Carefully. Adam is oblivious to these things, which is both endearing and frustrating. He’ll see her gratitude, her earnestness, her desperate need to prove herself worthy of his help. He won’t see what’s really growing in her heart.’
Lilith’s lips curved into a small, private smile—the expression of someone who had already mapped out the next several moves in a game her opponent didn’t even know they were playing.
’But I see it. And I won’t let Adam stay here any longer.’
Outwardly, she gave no sign of her internal calculations. Her hand found Adam’s, fingers intertwining with practiced ease.
"Come, Adam. Let’s go outside. Ignis is waiting, and you know how she gets when she’s bored." She tugged gently at his arm, her voice carrying that familiar, silken warmth. "We’ve been separated from the others long enough."
Adam allowed himself to be pulled, though he shot her a questioning look. "Hey, Lilith—slow down a bit."
"We should hurry," Lilith replied serenely.
"Wait a moment, Savior."
Silvie’s voice cut through, clear and urgent. Adam stopped mid-stride, turning back toward her. "What is it? Did you find something?"
Silvie nodded, gesturing toward one of the larger buildings near the cave’s rear. "We found the bandits’ storage room. There are weapons, coin, magical artifacts—things they stole from their victims over months of raiding. Please, take whatever interests you."
Adam’s eyebrows rose. "Artifacts, huh?" His gaze drifted toward the building, interest flickering in his crimson eyes. The Crown’s recent feast had reminded him just how useful unexpected treasures could be. "That actually sounds interesting. Might be worth checking out."
Lilith’s smile didn’t waver, but something shifted behind her eyes. Her grip on Adam’s hand tightened—just slightly.
’This elf,’ she thought, her internal voice taking on a sharper edge. ’She creating excuses for him to stay longer.’
Outwardly, she remained the picture of elegant composure. "Adam, perhaps we should rejoin the others first. We’ve been separated for quite some time, and Ignis is waiting. Besides," she added, her tone light and reasonable, "we have no idea if the artifacts there are even worth examining. They could be mere trinkets."
Adam glanced between Silvie and Lilith, seemingly unaware of the silent tension crackling between them. "It’ll only take a few minutes to check. If there’s nothing good, we leave. If there is..." He shrugged. "Waste not, want not."
Lilith’s inner eye twitched.
Silvie’s face lit up with a genuine smile—the first one Adam had seen from her since they’d met. It transformed her features, chasing away some of the exhaustion and grief that had etched lines into her young face.
"Follow me, Savior! This way!" She gestured eagerly toward one of the larger buildings near the cave’s rear. "We found some truly remarkable items in the storage room. If you don’t take them, you’ll regret it!"
Adam’s eyebrows rose at her enthusiasm. A small, amused smile tugged at his lips. "Well, when you put it that way..." He glanced at Lilith, his expression brightening with genuine interest. "She’s got a point. We might find something useful for you and Ignis too. Artifacts, weapons, maybe even some defensive gear."
Lilith’s smile remained perfectly in place—serene, elegant, utterly unreadable. But her inner voice was considerably less composed.
’Look at her, practically glowing with the joy of being useful to him.’
Her fingers tightened almost imperceptibly on Adam’s hand as she allowed herself to be pulled along.
They entered the storage building, and Adam stopped short.
The room was packed. Shelves lined every wall, stacked with weapons, armor, and glittering magical trinkets. Chests overflowed with coins—gold, silver, even a few gleaming platinum pieces. Scrolls and tomes filled wooden crates. Enchanted jewelry hung from hooks like ordinary decorations.
Adam let out a low whistle. "These bandits... they’re loaded."
Silvie’s expression darkened, the momentary brightness fading. "It’s because of their filthy work. Elf slaves fetch a high price—especially purebloods like my clan. The bandits have been raiding our caravans and settlements for months." She gestured at the wealth around them, her voice tight with suppressed anger. "Every coin here is stained with the blood of my people. Every artifact was stolen from victims who are now dead or enslaved."
Adam’s gaze swept over the treasure, his expression thoughtful. "Then it’s fitting that you’re the one giving it away." He glanced at her. "You could keep all this for yourself. Rebuild your clan. No one would blame you."
Silvie shook her head firmly. "No. You earned this. You saved us. The treasure is yours by right." She met his eyes, and there was something almost fierce in her expression. "Take whatever you want. Use it to help others. That’s the best possible outcome for these ill-gotten gains."
Adam studied her for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "Alright. Then I’ll take you up on that."
