I turned around and tried to find a better position to sleep on the rough mattress. The Prince had very, very graciously given me a room in the servants quarters. Something that I had never stepped in but now where I was sleeping. The mattress was highly uncomfortable with knots ans bumps in it. I could not even sleep a wink because of it. All my life I have been sleeping on mattresses made out of feathers and with silk coverings, now I was sleeping on something from which I could feel the hardness of wood the bed was made from. It was too much now!
I sighed harshly and stood up from the bed. This is it! How could he expect a princess to sleep in a servant’s quarter?!
I grabbed my cloak and moved to the door. Opening it, I moved to the residential quarters of the second and third crowned Prince. The servant’s hallway was different from that of the regular use by the family members in the castle of Lethoris. These were used for daily choices such as changing the bathwater or for simply doing the chores. The chores no one wanted to see.
But I had no idea where it was or what it looked like because from what I saw, the hallway that I had entered was the a beautiful one and I knew that it was the one used by the royal family.
Oh well, It must be for the best because of this at least I would reach the prince sooner.
I turned around to the next hallway but stepped back immediately. Some Guards were standing at the doors, chatting the night away. What was I supposed to do for that? I could not sleep in the servants quarters anymore. My back hurt more than what I had been through while learning to dance.
I was desperate. Which was quite shameful given that I had all the riches in the world and the ones I carried around would be enough to buy a whole inn. Also, I had to make sure that the Prince was not going to sleep easily while he had uprooted my night.
I heard giggling and I looked over to the other hallway where two girls were walking, who had heated skin and wild hair which gave me the impression that they had been with the man in the chambers that they came from he must have been the third Prince.
Well, what had the world come to?
I touched my cheeks and then pinched them harshly making the blood rush to them and heat them. Once I was sure that they were red, I took off the cloak and brushed through my hair making them fly in random directions.
My heart thudded loudly in my chest as I realised that what I was about to do was degrading and what a whore did. I was a princess and someone who was engaged to another Prince, someone whose Kingdom depended on that marriage and here I was behaving like a whore just to get to a more comfortable bed.
Did the people in my country sleep and comfortable beds like me and my sisters did? It was shameful enough that I have been abducted twice and more so I was behaving like a whore.
My eyes stung and I closed them as I palmed my entire face. This was not who I was. I could make more sacrifices if I was needed to and I was not someone who would always put myself first. That was not a queen, that was not who I was at my very core.
I stepped back but jumped in fright at the loud clank. I turned back to see what it was. A vase of steel had fallen because I had pushed it.
"Who is it?!" A loud voice thundered and I heard the boots thudding against the ground coming to see who the Intruder was and it was me.
My first instinct was flight.
I ran to the end of the hallway, turned to where it took me only to hit something else.
"Ah, look at that," I heard, "What a beauty you are."
I looked up immediately with wide eyes as I noticed another man in front of me taking me in.
He tilted his head as he asked me the next question. "Whose harem are you from? I have never seen you before. Are you a concubine of my father’s?"
"What? No!" I shook my head immediately.
He laughed. "You must be a maid then." He nodded to himself.
Well, sir, you are dead wrong. I have the crown of a princess on my head and soon a Queen’s would replace it.
I shook my head again and I watched as the expressions in his eyes changed.
"So you are not a concubine and you are not a maid." He said with a smile that haunted me and stepped closer. The guards were behind me and he waved them off making me alone with him. "Then what else can you be?" He taunted me and I gulped hard.
What else was I?
A princess and a soon to be queen but as of this moment, I could see those sleeping past my fingers.
"I. .uh. ." I stammered to get the correct words out. Why was this happening!
He rose a brow, "Yes, you." He confirmed in mockery. "I am going to need an answer soon because if I don’t, I will make sure that you are either of the two; a concubine or a maid, however," he looked at me up and down, "I certainly think that the former would be good for you. Such eternal beauties should not be working and polishing of the floors instead you should be drowned in jewellery and pure silk."
I would be a better maid. I thought of it immediately.
"Oh?" He chuckled with a raised eyebrow.
Had I said it out loud? I wondered and I looked up at his face. "I am afraid you do not have that choice." He smiled, "After all, I have found you and I find you being a concubine much better than being a maid."
