Chapter 50: Job Offer

Wise drank more of the chamomile tea before placing the cup on the table. "You don’t have to accept it, but I felt I should at least make you the offer."

Taryn’s tears had settled, most likely from the surprise. A job offer was the last thing she had expected.

’I can give her money but then what? Will she continue living here? A place where she has no friends...’

Taryn quickly composed herself. A job..." she said, her voice low. "A job might just be what I need."

"What position will I fill?"

Wise coughed. "Heh?"

Taryn cocked her head to the side. "Heh?"

’How did I both think of this?!’

All he had thought about was the job offer, nothing else, not even a role.

Wise brought the cup of tea to his lips to buy him time, only to discover that it was empty.

"S—" Wise was about to curse when he suddenly stopped, realizing that Taryn was still watching him.

There was a crease between Taryn’s eyebrows as she tried to make sense of what she heard. "S? Secretary—?"

"Uhum, yes, that is definitely what I was about to say," Wise quickly cut in.

He leaned back on the chair and crossed his legs. "As you already know, I am a dragon and as such I have vast resources, but the more my assets grow the more I need workers to manage them."

Taryn smiled. "What kind of assets will I be managing?"

"Well princes—*cough*"

Meanwhile, Taryn looked more confused. "Um, priceless commodities?"

’Well, you could say that...’

"I feel like you are already perfect for the job," Wise remarked and picked up a cracker.

Crunch!

"So? What do you say?"

Taryn didn’t even take time to consider his offer, her mind had been made up from the moment he made the offer.

"I would love to, thank you Xanthos!" Taryn moved over to him and surprised him with a hug, she was crying but this time they were tears of joy.

Tears that would undoubtedly leave a stain on his shirt!

Wise sighed but didn’t push her away. After a few seconds, Taryn drew back and went back into the kitchen to refill his tea.

While she was in the kitchen Wise pulled the coffee table even closer. "Do you have any paper? And a pen or quill?"

"A pen? I’m coming,"

She brought a cup of tea, placed it on the table and went into her room, only to come back seconds later with yellowing paper and a pen.

At a glance, Wise could tell that she had probably ripped the paper out of one of her books.

"I’m going to write you a letter that you will give to a guy called Champ."

Wise purposely excluded the part of Champ being a dragonoid, after his experience with Esme he was unsure of what effect it would have.

He picked up the pen and began to write a letter to Champ, telling him of Taryn’s new role and instructing him to show her around as well as help her out till they came.

Wise’s mansion was not too far from a city, so he added in the instructions that she be given a place to stay in the city, pending when they return.

When he finished writing, his eyes suddenly glowed blue, his round pupils transforming to oval slits.

And then a small fire erupted on the paper, burning an image of a dragon on it, as well as the name, Wise Skyfire.

Before Taryn could ask, he then said, "By the way, my real name is not Xanthos, it is Wise Skyfire. But keep that a secret until you leave this city, don’t even let anyone else see this letter."

There were a few heroes who had a bone to pick with him for one reason or the other, Wise could not let her become a hostage because of him.

Taryn nodded and neatly folded the paper, "I will."

’Just like that? She didn’t even ask about my fake name...’

’Maybe she always suspected that I was using an alias?’ Wise thought before speaking once more.

"Alright, I guess I’m done here." He rose to leave when he remembered something.

"Oh, this is for your transport." He reached into his pocket and pulled out three silver coins.

Taryn stared at it with wide eyes. "I-Isn’t that too much?"

A hundred and one bronze coins were equal to one silver coin and transport from here to Wise’s mansion would probably cost nothing more than fifty.

But Wise wanted her to have enough money for food and any other thing she would want to get along the way.

"Don’t worry about it. Oh." Wise tossed her one more coin, a gold dragon. "This should settle your debt right?"

There were probably a few goods she could still salvage.

Taryn’s eyes glistened with tears. "Y-yes," she said while sniffling. "I’ll never forget your kindness!"

Wise waved his hand dismissively. "Don’t worry about it, it’s nothing."

’It looks like I’ll be collecting more tribute soon!’ He thought as he left Taryn’s humble home.

’It’s time to check on my girls..."

On the crowded streets of Teasei, everyone was going about their daily business, some were shopping, others were trading and a good number were gossiping.

Amidst these people, rushing through the crowd was a woman with her head wrapped up in a black veil.

In one hand was a bag for an unknown substance while her second hand held onto the veil to keep it from slipping.

And below that veil, if anyone cared to observe properly, they would see a stray lock of dark purple air that matched this woman’s violet eyes.

After moving around the road aimlessly, the young lady walked up to an old woman to ask her for directions to a particular place.

She listened attentively, taking mental notes and then thanked the woman before hurrying away.

After walking for some time, she stopped in front of a shop and stared up at the sign, her shoulders slumped down just before she pushed the door open and stepped in.

The sign board read...
