Chapter 49: Taryn’s Place

Following the old man’s instructions, Wise navigated his way through the streets of Teasei until he arrived at the edge of town.

He noticed most houses in this area had number plates nailed onto them for easy identification.

It reminded him of how things were done back on earth, this way, finding someone’s house was far easier.

He walked past a couple of houses until he arrived at the house he was looking for. The house was modest, it had a small compound separated by a short wooden fence.

The front of the house was decorated with flowers that surrounded its perimeter, and an old tree stood by the side, casting a shadow over the house.

Seeing that the small gate was already open, Wise let himself in and walked up to the door.

Knock Knock

Wise waited for some time, staring at the wooded door and anticipating when it would open.

Five seconds later, when he was impatiently on the verge of knocking again, the door was pulled open, and standing behind it was Taryn, watching him with surprise.

"X-Xanthos?"

Wise smiled. "How are you doing Taryn?"

Tarn still seemed surprised by his abrupt visit but she nodded. "I’m doing great, please come in," she said, leaving the entrance of the door to give him space to enter.

The inside of the house was beautifully maintained. Although it was not flamboyant in any way, Taryn had used what was available to her to make it homely.

Her living room wasn’t overly furnished, it had the essentials— a single couch, a small coffee table at the center of the room placed on a black rug and a single painting hanging on the wall.

By the side of the room were light green translucent curtains with floral patterns.

These curtains were slowly swaying from the light breeze, bringing in a nice floral scent along with It.

Taryn closed the door and hurried towards the kitchen. "Would you like some tea?" She asked, standing by the door.

Wise turned his attention from the room to her. "Sure, any type is fine."

The elf smiled and entered the kitchen, shortly after Wise heard the sound of a fire.

He walked over to the painting and took a moment to admire the art— an elven archer in the middle of a hunt.

’This art...’

It was masterfully made, just from a glance, Wise could tell that the artist was a man with passion.

The colour usage was done in perfect harmony, with the artist placing each colour with perfect consideration for the next. Nothing seemed out of place, even colours that naturally stood out like red were tamed.

And the attention to detail... the artist had painted the image in a way that it almost felt alive.

"You seem to like that piece," Said Taryn from somewhere behind him.

Wise tore his eyes from the piece and turned to see her moving the coffee table closer to the couch.

On top of the table were two cups of chamomile tea, as well as a small plate of flour crackers. Wise left the painting and sat on the couch.

"I’m sorry, these are the only snacks I have around."

"It’s fine." Wise picked up the tea and took a sip.

After a brief silence, Wise then asked, "Were you at your shop last night? I heard people got evacuated when the incident happened..."

Taryn’s fingers began to thrum on the chair. "I-I-I left early that night."

She was acting oddly nervous but Wise did not push it, he saw no reason to. "You’re probably wondering why I’m here right?"

Taryn nodded as she nibbled on one of the crackers.

"It’s about your shop. I saw what happened to it."

Taryn’s mood suddenly dampened at his words. "Oh..." She forced out a smile. "Don’t worry about it, I’m sure I’ll figure something out."

"How though? Didn’t you just pay off most of your debt?"

Taryn looked to the side, avoiding his gaze but Wise continued. "You had to take out a loan the first time, how will you cope now that you have lost everything?"

She had not just lost her shop, the drinks and food items she had in stock had also been obliterated.

And that was not the worst part of it. Business owners often took goods on credit, especially drinks and paid only after selling a certain portion of it.

That means she was not only broke, she was also in debt.

Taryn sighed and chugged down her tea like a drunkard would do a shot, her eyes watery. "Maybe I should just run away?" She asked, the tea cup shaking in her hands.

"At least that way I’ll escape the debt," she muttered. "Maybe I can start over as a farmer in a distant town?"

As those words left her lips, Wise tried to imagine her doing farm work. Taryn although a hard worker was a sophisticated girl, chances are she was either from a noble family or worked with one.

The thought of her lifting a hoe...

Despite his sour mood, Wise found himself on the verge of laughter.

"Keh." He tried his best to hold back his laughter but a slight chuckle escaped.

And that was all it took to send Taryn bawling. Tears poured out of her eyes like a river, dripping down her cheeks uncontrollably. "Er... excuse... my manners." She tried to say in between sobs.

Wise panicked. "D-don’t cry... I’m sure... I’m sure you will be an excellent farmer!" frёeωebɳovel.com

"You seem capable enough, you will figure your way around a shovel in no time!"

"You don’t even have to do the fieldwork, there are goats, pigs and tons of other animals to take care of—"

Wise paused. ’The fuck am I saying?’

Taryn’s crying intensified to the point that it became grating. Wise moved over to her and held her shoulders comfortingly.

’I guess I better tell her before she dries up ten years worth of tears..."

"Taryn..."

—More tears

"Taryn..."

—Louder weeping.

"Taryn!" Wise called out, raising his voice to sound above her crying.

"Y-yes?" She sniffled, tears still gushing out of her eyes.

Wise sighed.

"I actually came here to offer you a job..."

Taryn’s crying finally settled and she wiped her face. Due to the tears, her green eyes were gleaming like gems as she stared at him, her face blushed red.

"W-what?"
