The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 319 - 311: A Son Is Born
On the soft couch inside, Lin Youning refused to let Shanmoi and Hailan massage her legs. After sitting for a while, her legs felt much better.
"It’s so late, you should go and rest. I’ll be lying down soon as well."
"Miss, your legs are swollen. If you don’t get a massage, you won’t be able to walk tomorrow. You’ll end up suffering," Shanmoi said with reluctance.
Hailan was also worried, "I advised Miss to come back and rest earlier, but she didn’t listen. I’ve heard that childbirth can take a whole day and night, and since it’s just beginning, there might not be any progress tonight."
Lin Youning gave a bitter smile, "I’m just worried. Although the relationship is what it is now, childbirth is like walking through the gates of hell. We’ve known each other for so many years. Alright, you both can leave now. I’m going to rest."
"We know Miss doesn’t like to hear this, but make sure to rest well," Hailan said, understanding that persuading her was futile, and she remained silent.
Lin Youning nodded with a smile, and the two finally withdrew.
Shanmoi and Hailan were still uneasy, but seeing the lights in the room extinguished and no activity for a long time, they finally felt assured enough to leave, only to hear some movement outside which made them walk over.
"Master sent me to inform the Madam that there probably won’t be any news tonight, advising her to rest first." The messenger was Li Si.
Shanmoi nodded, although she resented the Marquis for sending someone over at such a late hour to deliver the message. She didn’t dare express it. When Li Si tried to speak more with Shanmoi, she ignored him and dragged Hailan away.
After discussing it, they thought it best to tell Miss tomorrow, considering she had finally fallen asleep with much difficulty.
At the Marquis Mansion, Mrs. Dong’s bleeding stopped after the Imperial Physician applied needles. But the labor had been initiated, and the midwife went in. After a night of turmoil, the child had not been born yet. Had it not been for bowl after bowl of ginseng soup sustaining her, Mrs. Dong wouldn’t have survived.
Sister Hui, with reddened eyes, saw her grandmother arrive and went to meet her, "Grandmother."
Mrs. Dong Sr. patted her hand, "It’s alright, it’s alright. Your mother is blessed. Don’t worry. She will get through this."
Sister Hui nodded, ushering her grandmother into the flower hall. Inside, only Gu Yifeng was seated. Sister Hui explained, "Grandmother kept vigil here through the night. In the morning, she was persuaded to rest as she couldn’t hold on any longer."
Mrs. Dong Sr. was satisfied to hear this, after all, her daughter was giving birth for the Gu Family. After an entire night of suffering, it was still uncertain if her life could be preserved. It would be unacceptable if none of the Gu Mansion people cared.
Gu Yifeng stood to pay respects. Mrs. Dong Sr. nodded without much warmth, and after sitting down, she said, "For these years, my daughter has only had the Marquis Mansion in her heart. She seldom came back to visit us, except more frequently this year. The Marquis is a man of great ambition. This old woman asks for nothing but for the Marquis to understand my daughter’s devoted heart."
Sister Hui and the lady concubines of the mansion were present, so Mrs. Dong Sr. refrained from speaking too much. Despite everything, titles mattered. She could say this only because she was a senior; otherwise, how dare she.
Gu Yifeng stood and clasped his fist in salute without saying much more.
Mrs. Dong Sr. couldn’t sit still and asked impatiently after a short while, "What’s the situation over there?"
"They said the birth canal hasn’t opened yet, but the child wants to come out early. She has taken the medicine prescribed by the Imperial Physician, waiting for the canal to open." Aunt Lv replied.
Mrs. Dong Sr. nodded, "Didn’t Madam come?"
She was referring to Lin Youning.
However, everyone in the room was taken aback by her question. Initially, they did not understand to whom she was referring. Aunt Lv first responded, saying with a smile, "Madam and the Marquis just returned from the border yesterday. She wasn’t feeling well, and hasn’t come over yet."
Gu Yifeng sipped his tea without even lifting his head.
Sister Hui wanted to advise, but feared it would make her grandmother more upset, so she dared not speak more. She could only look at her grandmother imploringly, hoping she would not ask further.
"Oh, I see. I was wondering. The Gu Family is of simple kind, and now there are only two branches. The Marquis Mansion has matters, and she as the Madam of the first branch should have come." Mrs. Dong Sr.’s words seemed understanding but betrayed a sense of dissatisfaction.
"Grandmother, Aunt may not understand these things, and she’s unwell. Otherwise, how could she not come?" Sister Hui quickly intervened to prevent her grandmother from asking more.
"You child, I said nothing else," Mrs. Dong Sr. conceded to her granddaughter without saying more.
Gu Yifeng set down his teacup, "I must report border matters to the Holy Emperor today. I’ll go freshen up for the court first."
With a nod to Mrs. Dong Sr., Gu Yifeng strode out.
"Your mother is in labor in there," Mrs. Dong Sr. expressed her displeasure.
Sister Hui felt her grandmother was wrong, "Father just returned. He’s expected at the Holy Emperor’s. Don’t harbor any thoughts about this, Grandmother."
Mrs. Dong Sr. realized her impulsiveness and smiled apologetically, "I just spoke out of concern for your mother, not to blame your father."
"I understand." Sister Hui clasped her grandmother’s sleeve, "Grandmother, I can’t go in to see Mother. Perhaps you should take a look. How’s she now?"
That whole night left Sister Hui restless.
"No need for you to say, I should go check as your mother is my flesh and blood." Mrs. Dong Sr. sighed, standing up, "Come, let’s go take a look." 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Aunt Lv quickly followed, and Aunt He did the same upon seeing this.
Sister Jian and Sister Ran followed behind as the group headed for the main chamber, but only Mrs. Dong Sr. and Aunt Lv actually entered.
Inside, the previous night, Mrs. Dong’s cries were audible, but by daybreak, all fell silent.
Were it not for Jingfu coming out intermittently to deliver messages, one might think Mrs. Dong was no longer there.
Finally, not long after Mrs. Dong Sr. entered, faint talking and crying could be heard from inside. Sister Hui clenched her handkerchief tightly, staring at the doorway, eager to rush in herself. Soon after, more commotion arose inside, along with the sounds of her mother’s pain.
Sister Hui urgently sent a maid inside to inquire about the situation. Hearing that it had started, she finally breathed a sigh of relief, but listening to her mother’s painful cries, Sister Hui’s face turned pale.
Finally, at noon, Mrs. Dong gave birth to a six-pound boy. Although his breath seemed weak after a harrowing night, he was alive.
