Chapter 214: The King’s Smile Is a Sign of the Apocalypse

Edmund let out a harsh sigh and rubbed his face with both hands, almost like he was trying to press down the guilt and frustration building inside him.

"My wife," he said hoarsely. "Why do you always make me fall in love with you all over again?"

Then, without warning, he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her closer. "It’s not fair ..."

[She’s too kind and too adorable for someone like me.]

[How did I get this lucky? The Moon Goddess must’ve made a mistake when she gave me a mate like her.]

[Oh, damn it! I shouted at her earlier! How could I raise my voice at my wife?!]

[Didn’t she once say her heart hurts every time someone yells at her?] Edmund groaned inwardly, feeling even more miserable.

[Damn it! I messed up so badly tonight. I deserve to be punished! Should I just let her hold my head underwater in the lake? Maybe that’d make us even ...]

Why?!

Why did he always think that she had the heart to punish him that harshly?!

"Husband," Primrose interrupted his thoughts with a soft, sweet voice, like warm honey. "My chest feels a little hurt ..." She placed her hand over her heart, her expression turning adorably pitiful, hoping to get his full attention.

Edmund’s face turned pale. "Is it ... is it because I yelled at you earlier? I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry." He sounded panicked, his words stumbling over each other. "Do you want me to call Dr. Silas?"

"You don’t need to call a doctor," Primrose whispered, batting her lashes at him. "You can heal me with your saliva, remember? If you kiss me deeply, I’ll feel better right away."

It had been a while since Primrose played around like this, but honestly, it was fun.

In the past, Edmund would react awkwardly, like he wanted to kiss her but was too afraid to touch her. But now ... oh, she didn’t even need to try hard to get her husband to kiss her.

The moment Primrose said those words, Edmund immediately pulled her into his arms and kissed her.

He gently lifted her chin so he could kiss her even deeper, giving her a bit of his "healing" saliva to make her feel better.

"Do you feel better now?" he asked softly as their kiss ended.

Primrose gave him a dazed, dreamy look, like the kiss had made her drunk. "Maybe ... give me one more ti—"

Before she could finish her sentence, Edmund kissed her again. His hand slid gently down her back, tracing the length of her spine inch by inch, sending a shiver through her body.

The longer he kissed her, the more dizzy she felt and she could even smell his pheromones starting to fill the air.

[Aren’t they cold? Should I ask someone to bring them towels or something?]

[Wait, weren’t they yelling at each other just a few minutes ago?! I leave for a second and now they’re kissing?!]

[Holy crap, this feels like a scene from a romance novel! I’d definitely reread it a hundred times!]

Primrose suddenly pulled away, her face heating up as strangers’ thoughts slipped into her mind.

She covered her blushing cheeks with both hands, too embarrassed to even meet his eyes. "Edmund ... we’re still outside," she whispered.

"I know that," Edmund said, genuinely confused as to why his wife had suddenly stopped the kiss. "Is that a problem?"

Primrose peeked at him through the gaps between her fingers and mumbled, "People have probably been watching us this whole time." She groaned softly, "Edmund ... this is so embarrassing."

Instead of being embarrassed with her, Edmund chuckled, something so unexpected that it caught Primrose completely off guard.

She stared at him, stunned. He rarely smiled like that, and when he did, it always felt like the world slowed down for a moment.

But when she heard more whispers from the people secretly watching them, her cheeks grew even hotter.

[The world ending must be approaching!]

[DID HIS MAJESTY JUST SMILE?! NO, HOLY SHIT, HE LAUGHED! HE IS FUCKING LAUGHING!]

[I knew it! The apocalypse is near, I should’ve stocked more food at home!]

Edmund was just laughing, and the first thing people thought was that the world must be ending?! How dare they think of her husband that way?!

"That’s alright," Edmund said gently, running his hand over her head like he was calming a flustered kitten. "We’re husband and wife. There’s nothing wrong with kissing each other."

Kissing? Primrose thought to herself, cheeks burning. That wasn’t just a small kiss, they had definitely been making out.

"So ... you knew?" she tugged gently at his shirt, her voice barely above a whisper. "You knew people were watching us that whole time?"

Edmund didn’t answer right away, but in his head, he was already grumbling. [Of course I knew. They were breathing like bulls and gossiping from a mile away.]

He knew all that, yet didn’t show a single expression on his face?!

"Who cares about them?" Edmund finally replied. "The only thing that matters to me is hearing your voice and seeing you in front of me."

Primrose blinked, her heart skipping a beat. She slowly lowered her hands, wanting to see his expression more clearly.

"But you didn’t even stop running when I called out to you earlier," she pouted a little. "Don’t run away from me like that again."

The smile on Edmund’s face slowly faded. "I’m truly sorry for my awful behavior," he said. "I promise it won’t happen again."

[I’m afraid my wife will throw herself into the lake again if I try to ignore her like before.]

Primrose let out a weary sigh. It seemed like they were both overstimulated after watching Thevan take his own life, so it made sense that neither of them could think clearly that night.

"I’m sorry too," she murmured. "For jumping into the lake without thinking it through." Her voice softened, and her cheeks flushed with embarrassment at how childish she had been. "It won’t happen again. I promise."

[Of course it won’t happen again,] Edmund thought darkly. [I’m going to order the soldiers to fence off this damn lake.]

Primrose was quiet for a moment, then lifted her chin and looked him straight in the eye.

"But let me say this one more time," she said clearly, her voice filled with certainty. "You’re not a monster, Edmund. And I’ve never, ever seen you that way." She gently reached for his hand. "You’re my husband. That’s who you are, and that will never change."
