Chapter 131: A sister’s love (2)

Helena bit her tongue. What was she to do to help Hazel? It was only one full day that had gone by and Hazel was onto her second day here. What was occurring for Hazel not to be doing well? This wasn’t like the Hazel she knew, but why would the queen lie about this?

"How isn’t she getting used to the palace? She did it so easily when we were in the selection so there must be a mistake. A little missing home that will go away," Helena said, not worried.

"This morning we had a bit of a heated argument so we’ve not been getting along. I want to help Hazel and I know she wants to accept my help, but the pressure is already getting to her so we need to help her before the worst can happen," Tabitha explained.

Helena found it weird that Hazel would have a heated argument with the queen. The only time she saw Hazel argue with someone she shouldn’t was when she got upset with a few of their relatives. Hazel was normally one to keep her anger at bay and be respectful. You had to push Hazel for her to react.

The queen’s story was a bit odd, but did that mean Hazel was already giving in to the pressure?

’This is all confusing,’ Helena thought.

"How would you like me to help you? I don’t think there is something I can do," said Helena.

"Of course there is. You can speak to her to get the answer about what she is feeling and if she wishes to leave, return to me. Of course, the matter would need to be properly handled and a replacement found quickly. To save your family from the humiliation, it would be good for you to take Hazel’s place. Only if you want."

"I see," Helena replied, realising something about the queen.

Helena dug nails into her skin, an action not seen by the queen thanks to her hands being on her lap. The queen was playing with her. Using her to go after Hazel. It couldn’t be wrong when it felt strange from the moment the queen brought up Hazel.

A few days ago she would have been delighted and looking to help Hazel leave the palace for her sanity to then take Hazel’s spot as the future queen. Had they not made up she would have been running out of this room to convince Hazel.

The realisation left Helena hating her behaviour even more. She understood more why her mother did not want her to be in the palace.

"Hazel is often stubborn so she won’t listen to me. She would rather bear the pressure instead of saying something because she will worry about how it might affect the family. Still," Helena said after a short pause. "I will speak to her if you can provide me with a few minutes"

Tabitha smiled, her mood changing now that Helena was on board. Helena in exchange for Hazel was a good trade since Helena listened so well. She would bet a large sum of money that Helena wouldn’t have said a word about the dress or the shoes.

That Helena wouldn’t be so daring to wear a dress not provided by the palace to breakfast. Helena was raised right to follow those older than her, while Renee and Nathan allowed Hazel to speak out of turn.

"Wonderful. I shall have the maids escort you to Hazel during the break in her studies. Remember, we are trying to do what is best for your sister. If she cannot handle the pressure, we must aid her in overcoming it or get her out of the palace. She is a remarkable young woman who should not lose her mind trying to stay where she is not happy," said Tabitha.

She hoped Helena still desperately wanted to be here to the point she would do anything to stay. It wouldn’t be the first time a sibling would backstab another to get what they wanted. This palace was the most common place for such a thing to happen.

Tabitha was suddenly reminded of something Hazel said this morning. She believed the queen was a good mother and kind to those around her.

That was all true. Tabitha had a special love for her children and was kind to those she liked which was evident in still helping Helena when she could have ignored her now that the selection was over with.

Being queen didn’t mean there weren’t people she didn’t like and she would not do what she could to get them from near her or her family. She was just like anyone else in the kingdom to have another side to her for the people she didn’t like.

"If this doesn’t work, I think you would be suited to marrying one of the Henson boys," said Tabitha.

Helena stared at Tabitha as if she had grown another head. "H-Henson boys?" She stammered. "Do you mean Linda’s brothers?"

"Why yes. Who else would I be referring to? Should you not take Hazel’s place I think you should instead set your sights on the Henson family. You’ve been sitting next to gold all these years. Of course, we don’t need to start planning right now because you are focused on helping Hazel," Tabitha said, ending the topic for now.

In two ways Helena was useful to her.

Helena was close to throwing up over the thought of marrying one of the Henson boys. They were annoying older brothers she did not ask for and why would she want to marry one when they would be so focused on Linda? It was a terrible idea.

As eager as she was to come to the palace, Helena now wanted to leave as this gathering was weird from the very beginning. Maybe it had been weird from the start when the queen invited her for a sit-down during the selection.

There was an uncomfortable feeling when the queen asked her to drink something, but she dismissed it because the queen was rooting for her.

Helena wanted nothing more than to get up and leave to find her sister. It was becoming clearer why Hazel might not be getting used to the palace, but Helena didn’t want to jump too far into these conclusions without hearing from Hazel.

To act rashly might create a big mess for her and Hazel. She was trying to be more mature and not cause anyone to have to fix the trouble she made. What better way to show Hazel that she wished to return to how they once were by helping her against the queen?

’I need to think this through,’ Helena thought.

It was one thing for her to argue with Hazel since they were sisters, but she could not sit by and let someone pick a fight with Hazel. It was her turn to defend Hazel.

"Oh, I just thought of something you should never give Hazel. Anything to do with embroidery. I developed the talent, but the same cannot be said for Hazel. I remember at a garden party she was put on the spot to make something with the guests and made a fool of herself. Please avoid it," Helena advised Tabitha.

"That is good to know,’ Tabitha replied. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
