The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 132: A sister’s love (3)
Chapter 132: A sister’s love (3)
"You may take a break now, Lady Hazel. Get some water and a bit of rest as there is still much to do."
Hazel sighed in relief, desperately in need of the small break granted to her. She would gladly go back to the days when her mother would have her sit to do her lessons rather than stay with the tutor she had now.
She was being tasked with sitting and having to take in years’ worth of studying in one day. She was lucky that most of it she already knew.
Hazel stood to stretch her feet as the tutor looked over the answers to a test she had taken. Before she could enjoy the peace of not having the tutor repeat history about the palace, a knock was heard on the door.
Hazel watched as a maid rushed to answer it. She was not to have any guests during her lessons so she was curious to see who was bold to disturb her.
"Helena." Hazel’s eyes widened at the sight of Helena standing at the opened door.
She had been so caught up in the dress issue and then the lessons that she forgot to find out about where Helena was meeting with the queen. Hazel would have liked to sit with Helena to catch up on what was happening at home even if it were just a day and a half that she was gone.
Hazel was surprised to see Helena here because she wouldn’t have expected for the queen to allow Helena to come here.
At first glance, Helena didn’t see anything wrong with Hazel. Like she was stressing over being in the palace. "The queen granted me a few minutes to speak with you. May I come in if you’re not too busy with your lessons?"
She had to be quick with what she had to share with Hazel.
"You can come in. I am on a break now. Did-" Hazel paused, reminded of the queen’s maids in the room. "We should go on the balcony to speak so we do not disturb my tutor. This way," she said, leading the way for Helena.
Hazel stepped onto the balcony and waited for Helena to exit first to then close the doors so they could have a bit of privacy. "Is something wrong?"
"With me there is," Helena answered.
Hazel inspected Helena for any injuries. "Can you please hurry to tell me what it is? It won’t be long before the maids come closer. Sorry, that was a bit insensitive," Hazel apologised, realising how it might have come off.
Hazel looked inside the room she was using to study and saw that the maids were looking their way. They didn’t try to hide it.
Helena followed Hazel’s gaze inside the room and noting what was troubling Hazel, she said, "They are her spies. I don’t believe a word the queen says. She is trying to use me to get you out of the palace."
"What do you mean?" Hazel asked, confused.
"During our meeting today, she brought up how you weren’t getting used to life in the palace and before it might get to you, I should speak with you. If you didn’t want to be here, then I would talk you out of staying and go back to the queen. Then...Then," Helena hesitated to reveal the last part, but she knew she had to. "Then I would take your place."
"I don’t want it," Helena shared before Hazel could think she was plotting with the queen. "That’s why I am here to tell you. She thinks that I will be trying to talk you out of staying here right now. I was so foolish," she confessed.
Helena felt sick of herself. She was on the verge of throwing up as she walked to Hazel’s room with the queen’s maids escorting her. Helena had been thinking of how she made a fool of herself.
Realising that the queen thought she could use her because she appeared like she would stab Hazel in the back left her disgusted with herself.
"I messed up so bad-"
"Don’t cry, Helena," Hazel said, moving to stand before Helena to shield her from the prying eyes of the maids. The queen should not know that Helena didn’t go through with her plans. "They are watching you."
Helena tried her best to stop her tears. "Why aren’t you upset with me?"
"What reason would I have to be upset with you? You came to me to tell me the truth. It’s the queen that deserves my anger. This has to be her revenge because of this morning," said Hazel.
"She mentioned that there was an argument between you two. It is not fully two days yet so why is there so much conflict already? She was speaking about getting you a gift. Asking what you like and what you did not like," Helena revealed.
Hazel scoffed as Tabitha couldn’t be thinking of getting her a gift she would enjoy. The queen was crazier than she thought and it was a bit scary how Tabitha was able to hide this side of her.
Tobias had his issues with Tabitha, but they were mostly them not seeing eye to eye on small things. Hazel would bet that Tobias never knew this side of his mother. Would he believe her?
Hazel would have a hard time believing that her mother had this kind of side to her where she was trying to put sisters against each other if someone were come telling her this.
"I am invited to a gathering the queen is hosting. I wasn’t going to attend, but now I must. It’s the perfect event for her to back you into a corner so you will need someone by your side," said Helena.
Hazel was happy to hear Helena wanted to defend her, but she could not allow Helena to. "If you do this, she won’t help you anymore. I will deal with the matter by myself."
"Then I will not feel good about myself. I enjoy having the queen help me find a husband, but how am I to sleep at night knowing that I had to leave my sister fighting alone to get there? There is some time before the queen’s gathering. She is trying to use me so I will use her up until that day and never show up before her again," Helena said.
Helena was ready to stop meeting with the queen, but that would do no good for Hazel. "You need someone around her. She will keep asking me about you. I just know it. Allow me to help you and then I will leave her side."
Hazel was hesitant because she didn’t want Helena to become the queen’s enemy too, but she had no one on her side to be running around gathering information for her so Helena was in a good position to help her. "Very well," Hazel agreed. "I will do my best to become better so she will not come after you."
"Oh! I might have planted a seed for a way in which she could try embarrassing you, but she would fail. You still love to do embroidery, right? You were so good that father would have what you made framed. How else would you like to ruin her plans?"
Hazel already had an idea that would make the queen think her plans were going as she wanted. "I need you to make a tearful exit. Do as she says each time you come to visit the palace. I don’t trust sending letters for now so we’ll speak when you come to convince me."
