The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 130: A sister’s love (1)
Chapter 130: A sister’s love (1)
Helena exited the carriage her parents sent her in and looked up at the palace. She finally came back after not returning with Hazel the day before. She only had one hour but she would make the most out of it.
It took her hours to convince her mother to let her return to the palace alone and to deliver her letter about the change of how she would be visiting the palace. Helena had to use Hazel as a way to get her mother to stay home by saying knowing their mother was in the palace would make Hazel miss home.
"Lady Helena. The queen is expecting you," said a maid. "Please follow me."
Helena followed the maid to where the queen was awaiting her. She could only hope that the queen wouldn’t be upset with her for not coming to live in the palace until her engagement was secured.
Helena found the queen sitting alone near a garden she frequented during her stay with all the queen’s maids standing around the table. "Your Majesty," she greeted Tabitha with a curtsy.
"I have been patiently waiting for your return. After you didn’t show up yesterday, I started to think you no longer planned to return. That is until your father sent a letter to my husband. Did your mother also send one?" Tabitha asked, looking at the white envelope in Helena’s hands.
"Yes, Your Majesty. She sends her apologies that I will only be staying in the palace for an hour. The reason for it is inside the letter. If I may?’ Helena asked, requesting permission to take the letter to Tabitha.
"You may," Tabitha answered.
Helena took the letter to Tabitha and waited for it to be read.
’This is a polite way of saying your mother fears having you inside the palace with Hazel. I understand her concerns as Hazel should not have a weakness right now. You may sit so we can start speaking of more important things," said Tabitha.
Helena walked around to the other side of the table to take a seat facing Tabitha. She was relieved that the queen did not stay on why her mother was keeping her out of the palace and argued against it.
"Your Majesty-"
"Please, it is just the two of us here so you may call me, Queen Tabitha. Everywhere I go I hear your majesty and it is good to have moments where I am addressed as something else."
Helena looked around at the maids present. They certainly were not alone, but since the queen was giving her permission, she had to do it. It wasn’t like the queen had asked for only her first name to be used.
"Queen Tabitha," Helena addressed Tabitha. "I have also been waiting to speak to you again. This is something I shall speak of for years to come. Your kindness with helping me to get married."
’Oh, dear. You stir emotions inside of me, but we must not forget that this was all because of my mistake so I must do everything I can to make things right. I hope to see you married by the end of the season. When that time comes, I will give you a gift for how well you have handled this," said Tabitha.
Helena tried not to let her excitement show. She would love a gift from the queen, but she replied, "You are doing so much for me by helping me find a man to wed. A gift wouldn’t be necessary, Your Majesty. Not when we are to be family."
All Helena wanted was for Tabitha to take care of Hazel.
"How sweet of you, but I already have something in mind that I wish to give you. You have been wonderful company to have these days, so I will be sending an invitation for you to attend a gathering I will be having with a few women from around the town. Allow me to help you socialise," said Tabitha.
"Thank you, Queen Tabitha. I have always enjoyed your gatherings in the palace. I have only attended a handful of them since I was too young for most, but they were all lovely. I hope I can be half of a good host as you are in the future," Helena said, jealous of the queen’s talents.
"Oh, I am sure your mother has been preparing you well to be a good host. Tell me, what talents do you and Hazel have?" Tabitha questioned.
"I am good at flower arrangements and embroidery while Hazel is better at playing instruments. I think her ability to read many books in one day if you don’t disturb her must be applauded," Helena answered.
"I’ve heard good things about the two of you because of Nathan boasting about you. Hearing your father’s stories led me to invite the two of you to the palace. It’s a shame Hazel wasn’t married during the time the prince was away for it to be only you. Pour us some tea," Tabitha instructed the maid.
Helena’s smile slowly vanished . She didn’t want to go down this road again that Hazel should not have been in the selection. "We see now that it was better for her to be here. The prince loves her."
"Yes, that is true. Still, it is all unfortunate how it ended, isn’t it? We are lucky that we will be a family in the future. I have much to learn about Hazel so do you mind telling me a few things? I want to surprise her with gifts to welcome her into the family. She is missing home already," Tabitha shared.
"Oh, yes. What do you want to know?" Helena asked, suddenly feeling weird.
She came here to speak about the man she was trying to court and only had an hour to do so. Since this concerned making Hazel feel at home, she could spare a few minutes, but then they should move on.
"Well, I wish to know more about her personality. What does she like and hate? I don’t want to do and say something that might upset her."
"Hazel is not like that. Honestly, she would treasure any gift you take to her and properly store it away so it stays in perfect condition. I think it might be best if you prepare something based on what you think suits her. That kind of gift without help is what she likes most," Helena replied.
Tabitha was losing patience with Helena not being more quick to share about Hazel. The help with a gift was an opening for Helena to go down a rabbit hole talking about her sister. Where was the talkative Helena today?
"Helena, there is something about you that I had loved from the beginning of the selection and it might be a little rude to say this now, but I had hoped that you would be my daughter-in-law. With a little guidance I could have turned you into an excellent queen," Tabitha said, feigning disappointment.
"Your sister knows of my past favouritism to you and isn’t on good terms with me. I fear she might not be adapting to the palace as well as she should so she needs our help. Will you join me?" Tabitha inquired.
