Chapter 118: Listening (2)

"They need more caring for. Have the gardeners get rid of the ones that are dying and plant new ones immediately. There will soon be many guests in the palace and we cannot have it in this state. All the gardens need to be inspected and properly cared for," said Tabitha.

"Yes, Your Majesty. I will inform them right away."

Tabitha continued with her stroll through the garden. With a royal wedding coming, there was much to do as they would have guests from all over the kingdom and outside of it coming to see Tobias be married and become king.

There was not a single flaw to be spotted in the palace.

Tabitha listened to the sound of the guard’s armour as they rushed to stop someone from entering the garden now that she was here.

"Tobias," she said, knowing it was him after no words were said between the intruder and the guards. "What do you need from me now? You are dismissed," she ordered the maids.

Tobias walked toward where his mother stood gazing at flowers as the maids left the garden. "You suddenly have an interest in the garden."

"I always liked the garden," Tabitha replied.

"No, you didn’t. I remember you speaking of the dirt and too many bugs around whenever you sit in the garden. That’s why you preferred that I played inside so you can sit and watch me," Tobias said.

She wouldn’t be around if he was out in the garden playing as a child. One bug could have her acting out of character, screaming as she tried to get it off of her. It was a pretty hilarious sight that left him realising then that his mother was normal. freewebnøvel.coɱ

"I’ve tasked the gardeners to get rid of a lot of the bugs in the garden so now I can walk around without being disturbed. You forget that I sat in the garden during the selection. You didn’t answer my question about why you are here," Tabitha said, more interested in that than discussing how she didn’t like bugs.

"Can’t I just come to have a word with my mother? I thought you would have liked me putting an effort into us going back to normal," Tobias said as he looked around the garden for a flower to pick for Hazel. "You know, Hazel likes gardens too."

"I am aware thanks to you taking her to a garden that was only meant for us. She is the reason you are here with me now instead of training or with your father. What is it now, Tobias? What headache do you bring to me?" Tabitha asked, turning around to face him.

He could not fool her as there had to be a reason concerning Hazel for why he was here. Tobias wasn’t seeking her out these days to speak unless it had something to do with Hazel.

"It is not a headache. I am just here to be near you while I have some time before my training starts. I would like to get back to a good place with you. We started off good by sitting yesterday, why not continue it now?" Tobias asked despite the fact he had other reasons for being here.

"Right. I will play along with you for now. I have started to look over what needs caring for so the palace will be well decorated for your wedding. There is much work to be done, but you won’t need to worry about it," Tabitha said as she was looking over the wedding planning.

"Be sure to involve Hazel as much as you can. Women love planning weddings, right? Make a note to have a lot of pretty flowers that Hazel might enjoy. Some that she might not have seen before," said Tobias.

Tabitha smiled as it was good to see him caring about what Hazel wanted. As Jeffrey said, they should be happy that Tobias was able to find someone he loved from the selection. Not everyone had the chance to fall in love at the start.

"I will make a note of that. What is it about Hazel that you love? I’m curious why now instead of the past or did you love her then?" Tabitha asked, wanting to learn more about their relationship.

"She treats me no different than she would treat another man," Tobias replied.

Tabitha didn’t understand it since he should be treated differently as he was the prince. Rather than pry further, she decided to take the answer.

"She should be well on her tour right now. I am surprised that you are standing here with me instead of going to her. Unless you have seen her already. You must leave her be unless she is with an escort," Tabitha said as the test would come up again if they were to ever be caught alone.

"You’re eager to have an heir, but you don’t want me alone with her. As if a few kings were present before their parents married-"

’I don’t need another history lesson from you. You should marry and then have a child. There will come a night for you to make your marriage official so you must wait. I hope that doesn’t leave you thinking of inviting other women to your bed for anyone to see" Tabitha said, giving him a stern look as it was not to happen.

"I can not control you so if you must bed another woman, I advise you to do it in a private place so no one can see to gossip about it."

Tobias stopped walking and looked on at his mother. "I am not a dog in heat. I can control myself and I won’t be taking any other women to bed when I have Hazel. I am engaged."

"Forgive me because I didn’t think it would stop once you got engaged. Although I would love for you to be with only your wife, you will be king and can do as you please so I won’t get involved in your private matters. Just keep it from spreading," Tabitha advised Tobias.

A king having women would not be frowned upon as it wasn’t new, but she would like to avoid Hazel becoming a mess and the wedding being filled with talk about affairs.

"Mother, I said that I won’t seek other women now that I have Hazel. I had no responsibilities then," Tobias argued, angered by the fact she was not listening. He was not someone who couldn’t keep it in his pants.

His relationships with women were greatly spread across the years. Not day after day was he with a new woman. He was not around any women for months as he was away at war and then came back to the palace.

"Believe me, you did have responsibilities then and ignored them. Just as you are ignoring them now. What is it that you want for Hazel now?" Tabitha asked, wanting their fake conversation to be over with.

"It’s odd how you would like for her to be the only one, but get defensive when I try to do something for her. Fine, I am here to ask that you get rid of the few ridiculous rules you have placed for her. The dresses she has to squeeze herself into," Tobias said, revealing the real reason he was here.

"Dresses? It is dresses that you want me to change? Haven’t I turned a blind eye to enough? The dresses are already made-"

"Donate them or let them be sold. Someone would pay a hefty price for them."

"I will do no such thing and how do you know that they cannot fit her?" Tabitha asked as he shouldn’t have been present when Hazel was trying them on.

"Did you measure her before having them made? Then they cannot fit her," Tobias replied after a moment of silence. He bit his tongue as their conversation was not going well and he would not be losing his little deal with Hazel. "I will do whatever you want if you get dresses that suit her. I don’t want to argue."

Tabitha wasn’t looking to make any deals with him, but it turned out that there was something she needed him for. Something he would have said no to. "Anything? Very well," she agreed.
