Chapter 119: Listening (3)

"I will tell the head maid to get Hazel’s measurements done and for new dresses to be made. Until the new dresses are here, she will have to wear what was already prepared. Satisfied?" Tabitha asked.

"No. I’m a little annoyed at how you can bend the rules, but choose not to. Do you hate Hazel or are you troubling her to get to me because I didn’t want to be king?" Tobias asked as he could not understand her.

Tabitha turned back to the flowers. "I have no reason to hate Hazel. Don’t paint me to be a monster out to get the girl. I like Hazel. I like that with her here now you won’t try running away from what is your duty."

"I came to you to let it be known that becoming king isn’t what I want and you either brush it to the side or scold me-"

"If you run away from the palace, who will become king? I have no other sons to pass it on and none of the relatives are deserving of that seat. You are to be king. It has always been your path from the moment I found out I was pregnant. We cannot just leave the palace,’ Tabitha whispered.

"Do you think that it has never crossed my mind to take you and your sister to get out of here? I have had the thought many times and almost came close to stealing you away in the middle of the night, but then I think of your father who won’t be able to join us. Then, I thought about how I would be robbing the kingdom of a good king in the future. You."

"As bad as this place is, you are where you belong, Tobias. You were always meant to become king and one day you will see why it was best that you didn’t run away. If the other had not fallen sick you might have had the option," Tabitha said, gripping her dress.

Tobias wasn’t happy with his mother, but he let his anger go to comfort her. It didn’t mean that he agreed he was meant to become king. Running away will always seem like it was the better option. The palace was a little better because there was someone else added to his small circle.

"We should end this conversation here before it leads to an awkward dinner tonight. What is it that you want me to do? A deal is a deal," Tobias said, ready to hear about what he had to suffer through.

"Don’t worry about it as it would have just been a headache for you. Consider this one of my many wedding gifts for you and Hazel. Now you can go run off to see her," said Tabitha.

"I told you that I came here to have a little talk while I have time to spare. I have always joined you for your strolls around the palace. It’s been some time since I did it," Tobias said, deciding to stay.

With her back turned to Tobias, he could not see the smile growing on her lips.

"Then, you can walk by my side and point out a few flowers you would want at the wedding. We have plenty of options for you to surprise Hazel with," Tabitha said and then offered her hand for Tobias to hold so they walk together.

Tobias accepted his mother’s hand and let her hold onto his arm.

"I think something that I don’t know about is happening since you are so eager to walk with me and chat. These days when I speak I don’t think that you are listening," said Tabitha.

"I am. I don’t play around as much as you think. We are on track to going back to normal. I want to see the mother that I know come back. The one that would remember what it is like to be in Hazel’s place and try to make it easier for her. Please love her as you love me," Tobias requested.

"You don’t see it yet, but I have done things your grandmother would not have allowed. Hazel’s time in the selection was far easier than it was for me. Your grandmother would have strangled your father if he did anything like you and she always had the women behaving. We were all too scared to speak unless she addressed us. It was funny," Tabitha said, covering her mouth with her hand to hide her smile.

"Grandmother was scary," Tobias agreed.

He remembered her as someone who heavily wanted to follow tradition. She was a bit nice when he was a young boy and far from becoming king, but that was only in private.

"She was scarier than grandfather," Tobias recalled.

"Yes, she was. As strong of a man your grandfather was, with all the wars he won and how he ruled the kingdom, your grandmother was the one to give me nightmares. It still surprises me that I was able to survive all the days she taught me about becoming queen. I am trying to be better than her at welcoming Hazel to the palace," said Tabitha.

She was truly going easy on Hazel compared to what she experienced during her time preparing to get married to Jeffrey. Tabitha was this way because of Tobias. As much as she wanted to please the court and do well for the kingdom, she did not want to have a strained relationship with her only son.

"I would be able to see that if you would get rid of the foolish rules before I come to you. I like Hazel the way she is now so don’t have her losing any weight to slip into those dresses. For how much longer do you want all the women in the palace looking the same?" Tobias asked.

"It was considered to be a great standard of beauty-"

’For who?" Tobias asked, genuinely wanting the answer to who believed women looking as if they starved themselves was beautiful. What sick twisted mind thought that? "It had to be a king who didn’t know anything about women. Why a little more is better."

"Tobias," Tabitha sighed, wanting the conversation to be over with. "I have told you many times that there are things I never want to hear from your mouth."

"Believe me, that was the most innocent thing I could have said. You’d be surprised about the things father told me when I was around the age to start being more interested in women. Please be the one to tell Sofia of her attraction to men. Father is a bit crazy," Tobias said, remembering how much he wanted to get out of the room.

Tabitha chuckled as she imagined how that conversation went. "Her tutors will take care of it."

"As her mother, I think that you should tell her what happens. I have overheard the lecture tutors repeat and if I were a woman, I would still be clueless. If she comes to me for answers, I won’t lie to her. It’ll be the most awkward thing I ever do in my life, but she deserves the truth," said Tobias.

Hearing this, Tabitha planned to tell Sofia in the future first before Tobias could give his version. "I must speak to Jeffrey about what he said to you." freёweɓnovel.com

"Please save yourself and do not have him repeat what was told to me."
