Chapter 109: As a family (2)

"Why is everyone so silent? This is the first time we are all sitting together for the last week or so. You should be more excited," Tabitha said, looking around the table at her husband and children.

When she ordered the maids to prepare a quick lunch for them, she thought they would have been excited and eagerly chatting away as they sat here. They weren’t and it was more surprising that her daughter was quiet. freewebnøvel.coɱ

"That is exactly why we are silent. It feels awkward to be sitting here," Tobias spoke up.

He couldn’t remember the last time he sat with his family since he had either been eating with Hazel after choosing her or he was leaving the palace to go to Edgar’s home. Tobias couldn’t think of the reason why his father and his sister were being quiet. He didn’t think Sofia knew how to be still.

"A week of our dinners being different should not make this sit down so awkward. We should be able to come back and be perfectly normal. We have much to celebrate from Tobias’s engagement to the excellent poem Sofia recently wrote," Tabitha said, hoping the mention of the poem would get Sofia to speak.

"I have a sister now!" Sofia declared.

"No, no you don’t," Tobias said, not wanting Sofia to think of Hazel as her sister. "I have a wife. You have a sister-in-law. Address her properly."

"Tobias," Tabitha warned as it wasn’t serious. "But you mustn’t refer to her as your sister when we are in front of others, Sofia. Finally, you will have another woman around."

Sofia nodded her head, thinking she would still call Hazel her sister. Now she had someone to play with since Tobias no longer wanted to play. This woman could get Tobias to play with her like he did in the past.

"It’s nearing time for me to get out of this palace," Jeffrey said, his eagerness present in his voice.

"You can stay on the throne longer like other kings and then I don’t need to be your heir until you pass," Tobias suggested.

His father was still able and could fight in wars. Why give up the throne now when he could hold onto it for a few more years? There were plenty of kings who didn’t want to give up their thrones even to their sons and took their last breath while sitting on the throne.

Why did other princes have to be blessed with fathers like that while Jeffrey was eager to get away from the throne?

"No, your time is coming for you to take the throne. You are more young and able than I am. It is also time for you to start making heirs for the kingdom," Jeffrey answered.

"That is the only fun part about being king that you mention," Tobias muttered.

"Tobias," Tabitha warned again. She didn’t need his hobbies to reach Sofia’s ears.

"It is fun, but also depressing. Can you please not be in Hazel’s ear telling her about heirs? I would like to enjoy the first few weeks of my marriage in bliss. I don’t want whatever we do to be about heirs. What? She doesn’t know what I speak of," Tobias said, looking at Sofia who was now more interested in the cake before her.

"I still do not want you mentioning anything of the sort around her or me for the matter-"

"That is quite interesting considering the morning we had. Very well, you should never expect to hear anything about my relationship with Hazel. That I will gladly do for the rest of my life. Now if we could get the court to follow along with this, I’d say a few of my problems will go away," said Tobias.

He would like it if no one were to ever be concerned about what would go on in the bedroom with Hazel around the time they were looking to hear news about an heir. There was something that greatly annoyed him and he was not going to give the court the pleasure of doing it.

"Let us not speak of the court right now. We are sitting here as a family. We should leave our royal problems at the door and try to be normal for once. We can talk about how Tobias quickly fell in love with a young lady after claiming the selection was useless," Jeffrey said, moving on to another light-hearted topic.

As much as Jeffry wanted to hit Tobias for all the trouble he caused when he had a moment alone to think about it all, Jeffrey couldn’t help but laugh. He was still going to hit Tobias at some point, but for now, he was going to enjoy this side of his son.

"I still think that it is useless. Should I go back over what I told mother?" Tobias asked, happy to share history again. The selection might appear less exciting if the story were told with Sofia around. The thought of what might have happened if Sofia were not the princess and was called to join the selection.

"It does not need to be told again. This conversation is heading toward an argument I wish to avoid," said Tabitha.

"I want to invite the Wallaces to the palace for dinner and make it so that they can visit the palace to see Hazel. It will help Hazel settle in if she can see her family often and not miss them. You already invited her sister to stay in the palace. Do this," Tobias proposed.

"I am all for it," Jeffrey said, finding it a good idea. They were all family now that the two children were getting married. They needed to start working on becoming closer.

"Very well," Tabitha replied, having no issue with it as long as their presence would not distract Hazel. "I will allow for two visits a week for them to see her and have dinner with us. It will increase after the wedding when it is certain that Hazel will be your wife. We can’t let them settle in and then something happens."

"I am not marrying anyone else," Tobias said, certain of it.

He couldn’t picture Hazel running away now or falling for someone else. His decision wouldn’t be changed by anyone so this wedding was going to happen. As long as no one got involved and tried to make Hazel nervous about her coming title, it would all be fine.

The ones who wanted to say that anything could happen before the wedding were the very ones who were going to make something happen before the wedding.

"If for any reason Hazel doesn’t stay to become my wife, I am not doing over the selection, nor will I stay here in the palace. Don’t eat so much cake," Tobias said, taking the fork from Sofia before she could sneak a piece of his slice.

He would have to sit through her not being able to stay still beside him and talking about random things.

Tabitha looked at her husband, wondering if he had the same thought as her. With what Tobias said, she was going to make sure Hazel stayed so Tobias would no longer want to leave the palace.
