Chapter 108: As a family (1)

"Now that is settled, stop your tears so we can go find mother and have a little family gathering. Wipe your tears and perhaps wash your face. I will wait here for you so we can go together," said Hazel.

"Is it that bad?" Helena asked, wiping her face with her hands. She stood up to go straight to the bathroom and hopefully avoid any mirrors so she wouldn’t see her face.

"Do not be afraid to brush your hair!" Hazel yelled so Helena could hear her. "You look as if you had been rolling around on the bed as you cried. We don’t need the maids seeing you and thinking there is a ghost in the house again."

"Shut up!"

Hazel chuckled, already back to enjoying the day now that she and Helena seemed to be going right. There was no telling how long this would last, but she was going to trust that with Helena’s ugly cry, it was serious this time.

It was the right timing because she needed Helena on her side. Hazel didn’t trust the queen yet and didn’t want when Helena met with the queen, her secrets would be shared.

Helena would also be the bridge to better her relationship with the queen.

Hazel fell back on Helena’s bed, thinking of what Tobias was doing now. If he had quietly returned to his room like he said that he would or if he was trying to get back at who had brought up the test. She could only hope that he was following her advice to leave it be and enjoy the day. He could wreak havoc tomorrow.

The proposal started to replay in her head now that she thought about Tobias. It was still unbelievable that she was engaged to the prince of all people.

Hazel looked forward to seeing the ring Tobias was preparing for her. Even if the queen and king were to go back on their word and have her wear the ring the palace had already prepared, she would wear Tobias’s ring when they were alone.

"I am getting married to Tobias," Hazel said out loud to help her get used to her future.

"You are in disbelief just like everyone else," Helena said as she exited the bathroom. "After the few tales you told me about meeting the prince, I would have never bet on you two getting together. From enemies to lovers. It will make a good story for the town to spread around."

"Not many would know that Tobias and I did not get along in our youth. We kind of secretly hated each other. We both knew about the other’s dislike. Now we are getting married. It is a bit strange to know I like the man who was once the boy I wanted to hit with my book," said Hazel.

"It makes me think about who I hated in the past. I don’t want to marry any of the boys that I once disliked," Helena said, hoping that was not how her love story would go. "I will marry the man picked by the queen. That is far better."

"Now we must gossip," Helena said, taking a seat on the bed. "Did you ever kiss the prince?"

"He has only ever kissed the back of my hand. Tobias had been respectful of not trying something while we were in the selection," Hazel answered.

"Now that the selection is over, do you plan to let him kiss you?" Helena asked.

"You are quite invested in what I will do with a man you do not like. What I will allow is between me and Tobias. Not my nosey little sister," Hazel said, gently pushing Helena from being too close to her.

"I don’t like the prince and he certainly doesn’t like me, but I will never deny that he is one of the most handsome men around. I have heard the rumours that he is quite the charmer when it comes to women. Lucky you," Helena said.

"Right," Hazel softly answered as she was taken back to moments when Tobias bothered her by his closeness. He had not touched her but he had a way with his words to affect her. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

She was to kiss him when she returned to the palace and Hazel had a feeling that he would take her somewhere private to do it so they wouldn’t be interrupted. The mere thought of being alone in a room with Tobias to just kiss him on the cheek filled her with emotions she had never felt before.

Helena became suspicious because Hazel blushed out of the blue. Something must have happened with Tobias that Hazel did not want to share. Helena wanted to know but didn’t try to push for the answer since Hazel needed time to trust her again.

Seeing that Hazel was happy falling in love with the prince was enough for Helena at the moment. She had never seen Hazel behave this way even with David whom many of their relatives thought she would have married.

"Aren’t you the one to say that we should find mother to have a little gathering? You cannot sit here blushing as you think about the prince. You will get to see him tomorrow. Get up," Helena ordered, taking hold of Hazel’s arms to pull her up as she stood up. "We must give you a proper send-off."

"That sounds as if I have died or as if I am going off to war and you will never see me again. I am only going to the palace. When I marry and become queen, I will call for the three of you to come visit me when I feel lonely and ask that they let you visit when you miss me," Hazel said, noting this as her first order for when she would be queen.

She could not be in the same town as her family and not see them. It would not be right.

Hazel stood up to end Helena’s struggle of trying to pull her up. Now that they were back on good terms, it was time to bring everyone else together.

They walked side by side to go to the garden to find their mother.

"Are you truly happy with the man the queen has introduced you to?" Hazel asked, now needing answers about the mystery man she had been hearing about.

"He is a good man from what I have seen so far. He’s getting involved in the court so he will be in the palace a lot. I will get to see you often this way," Helena said, excited to get married to him so she could have a reason aside from Hazel to be in the palace.

Hazel wasn’t pleased to hear Helena be so excited over him being in the palace. Again, it didn’t seem like Helena was interested in a man because of love. She just wanted to get into the palace. "I hope that you can marry for love," she said.

"Of course I will. We are slowly getting to know each other and during that time, I am free to court other men so I know that I am making the right choice. He is a well sought-after man so I know not to think I am the only option he is considering. I will introduce you when we return to the palace," Helena said, smiling as she couldn’t wait to see him again.

"Can’t I know his name now-"

"No, because then it might slip to father and he will start digging around to learn more about him. Or try to speak to him and possibly ruin my getting engaged. I don’t know if the queen has said something to mother. I want you to meet him first. I need your opinion of him," Helena said as Hazel might see a few flaws she didn’t notice.

"Who you wish to marry is all about your opinion, but I will let you know if I think there is something odd about him or if he doesn’t seem to be the one for you in my eyes. How about you consider men who might not be in the palace? Consider all options," Hazel suggested.

Though Helena thought her happy ending was in the palace, the man of her dreams might be outside of it.

"I am looking around for men who catch my eyes. It is not like I have been outside of the palace for me to meet men who have no connection to it. That will start once I attend parties with mother and father. I know what you are thinking and I assure you that I am looking to marry for love," Helena said to end Hazel’s worries.

As much as she wanted to marry a man who frequented the palace often or had some power there, Helena wanted to be loved so she would not settle for anyone. She was in luck to have a few options in the palace as there were quite a few men not yet married.

"Good. Something tells me that there will be more men coming to our doors to court you," Hazel said as they would want to be married into the family of the queen.

Helena looked forward to it. "I know and it is exciting. I am going to enjoy making my pick."
