The Heiress's Comeback-Chapter 244: [ Volume 1] Chaper - Something strange.
Esme kept her eyes fixed on him, leaning in slightly. "Actually, yes, there is. You don’t make excuses, and you don’t leave loose ends. I’ve noticed that much. Yet Jenny... she’s still alive. The poison didn’t kill her. Why is that? Couldn’t find the antidote?" Her tone was laced with a mixture of challenge and curiosity.
A smirk slowly twisted across Ryan’s lips, dark and unapologetic. He met her gaze without a flicker of remorse, his words a blunt truth. "No, Esme. I could find the antidote."
His eyes lingered on hers, the hint of a darker truth in them. "The point wasn’t to kill her," he continued in a low, deliberate tone. "It was a warning. Jenny was meddling where she shouldn’t have, dragging my brothers into schemes that could’ve destroyed them. I needed her to understand that her place in our lives was... conditional. And she got the message loud and clear."
Esme watched him with a mix of intrigue and unease, her lips pressed into a thin line as she weighed his words. "So you play god, deciding who gets hurt or who gets a second chance, huh?"
Ryan shrugged, his gaze unflinching. "Not god, Esme. But sometimes, in this house, protection has different faces. And sometimes..." he paused, his voice taking on an unsettling calmness, "you have to be ruthless to keep the ones you love safe."
Esme’s laugh was sharp and resounding, breaking the heavy silence around them. She leaned back, taking in Ryan’s words with an expression both amused and thoughtful. "You’re right," she said, her laughter fading as her face turned serious. Her eyes were steady on him, her tone shifting to match the weight of their conversation. "There’s no point in having protectors without destroyers. If you want to defend the people you love, you don’t just shield them. Sometimes, you have to be willing to strike back, to tear down anyone who threatens them."
The conviction in her words felt like something she had learned the hard way, carved from her own experiences. Esme had grown to understand the importance of both roles—the protector and the destroyer. In the seven months she’d known Ryan and his brothers, she had come to see the intricate, lethal sides each one of them kept hidden. Behind their family bonds and playful moments lay layers of ruthlessness, sharpened by years of sacrifice and survival.
She thought first of Ray. To his brothers, he was calm, the gentle oldest sibling who bore his responsibilities with a pure heart. But to those outside their family, he was calculated and cold, his kindness a surface charm that hid his willingness to do whatever was necessary to protect them. Ray was beautiful, almost ethereal, his presence both magnetic and intimidating. But beneath that haloed beauty was a man who wouldn’t hesitate to cross any line for his family—even if it meant spilling blood.
Then there was Kai, a lawyer of formidable skill. He didn’t just have one or two degrees; he had multiple, each one specializing in areas of law that gave him a surgical precision in dismantling his opponents. Though he was young, his record was spotless, his approach ruthless. In court, he became someone else entirely, never showing mercy to those who deserved none. People underestimated him, mistaking his mer-blooded heritage for a softer disposition. But Kai’s courtroom demeanor was a force to be reckoned with—cold, efficient, and merciless. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Jay was different, a research scientist with a formidable reputation. On the surface, he was known for his calm, level-headed nature, respected and well-liked among his peers. But Esme had seen the other side of him, the side only family saw. In private, he was warm, cheerful, the one who kept them all grounded. Yet Esme knew his warmth was paired with a relentless mind. Jay was capable of quietly, ruthlessly dismantling anyone who tried to harm them, his scientific knowledge turned into an arsenal if the situation demanded it.
Each brother wore a different face depending on who was watching. For the world, they presented cool masks, each brother embodying his own distinct strength. For each other, they were loyal and affectionate, a source of strength and safety. But for their enemies? They were a fortress of fearsome intent, a force not to be reckoned with.
But Esme didn’t care about all that, not really. Why should she? The challenge of taming lions was so much more thrilling than dealing with loyal dogs. The more ruthless they were, the more unpredictable and indifferent—well, that only made her more drawn to them. She liked that contrast, the thrill of having someone so fierce, so untouchable to the world, yet somehow, in some way, hers. It was a feeling she savored, like winning a prize no one else could ever claim.
To Esme, the details of how they looked or acted didn’t really matter. Their sharp edges, their masks for the outside world—all of it just made them more fascinating. And if she was honest with herself, there was something downright adorable about the way they each tried to protect her in their own way, as if they weren’t the dangerous ones who might need protecting themselves.
She knew one thing for certain: she wouldn’t share them with anyone else. They were hers to keep, and that feeling was enough to make her heart race.
Esme was lost in thought, her mind swimming with the whirlwind of her new life, the layers and secrets she was slowly uncovering. Then, a soft laugh broke through her reverie, and she looked up to see Ryan leaning close, a faint blush dusting his cheeks as he moved nearer.
Before she could process, he tilted his head and pressed his lips gently to hers. The kiss was brief, but it lingered, and as he pulled back, a hint of mischief gleamed in his eyes.
She blinked, momentarily thrown off guard, but her usual wit quickly returned. "Do you know what you’re doing?" she asked, trying to hide the hint of a smile creeping onto her face.
