Chapter 157 - It's a Miracle

Princess Alina watched Sir Gavin leave the tent. His wince at opening the tent flap was masked by a clearing of his throat and a greeting to Alejo.

I guess it made sense that a Swordsman's son raised at the castle would know all of his clan's high ranking officials. Part of me felt that Sir Gavin somehow knew the entirety of the city.

I huffed at the thought, apparently disturbing Alina from her own thoughts. She shook her head at whatever thought consumed her attention, finally turning from where she last saw Sir Gavin's form.

At least we agree that Gavin does too much. I hope he follows any medical advice the doctor gave him so that he does not make his injury worse in this tournament.

I followed the princess taking in the rest of the tent. Agnar was being treated by the doctor on the cot that Sir Chalmers once occupied.

The curtain around my brother was still drawn, although my mother's voice mellowed in volume. For Benate's sake, I hoped the majority of the tirade was over.

Princess Alina joined Lady Calista who was perched on the side of Lord Jacobson's cot.

"How are you feeling?" Alina interrupted whatever silence fell between her two friends.

"Much improved since you two are here!" Lord Jacobson sat up straighter.

"What exactly did you hurt?" Princess Alina began before holding up her hand. "That is if it isn't too private."

I smirked at the thought. At least one of the ladies learned a lesson from their earlier entrance.

"I would hardly call a sprained ankle from a misstep a private matter." Lord Jacobson rolled his eyes.

"From your splint,I thought it was much more serious." Alina offered. "I guess you were not the least severe case, or else you might not have a cot."

"I suppose that is true. My ankle turned a pretty shade of purple before I got here, so there was no denying my injury." Jacobson divulged.

"Really? Purple already? That was quick." Calista offered. I had to agree. Carrion and Agnar's match had not taken that long.

"I can assure you that it was indeed purple," The doctor said, joining the crowd around Lord Jacobson. "Let me take a look once more before you're on your way."

Calista stood to get out of the doctor's way, unwilling to be escorted from the tent a second time. The ladies held hands as they silently looked onto Jacobson's injury.

Luckily his injury was limited to a modest part of his body. I do not think Princess Alina's cheeks could manage another shade of red today.

"It really is feeling much better, Doctor. Thank you for such excellent attention." Lord Jacobson, offered as he sat more upright on the bed. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

The doctor only acknowledged Lord Jacobson's pleasantries with a curt nod in his direction before he started unwrapping the splint.

Alina looked away as the final bandaging came unwrapped. My curiosity got the better of me and as she leaned away, I leaned in. I never really thought I would remotely care about how an injury would look, but somehow the description earlier piqued my interest

The ankle was slightly discolored, but nowhere near a shade I would call purple. Lord Jacobson flexed his foot as if testing it out.

"Jack, that is not purple at all." Cali scoffed, giving Princess Alina the courage to take a peek.

"I must agree with your friends' assessment. It looks like you are very much on the mend, Lord Jacobson," The doctor said with an amount of surprise in his voice. I did not know the man had the capability of being shocked.

"It did not look like this when the doctor wrapped it up. I guess it just needed some compression?" Jacobson questioned.

"I can confirm that it looked much more serious before. As it is, you are free to go. Take it easy, Lord Jacobson." The doctor ordered before bowing to Princess Alina and walking toward the curtain where my brother hid.

"I am glad you are alright, Jack." Princess Alina beamed.

"Me too." Cali chimed in.

"I am as well. I thought for sure I was going to be hobbling around for a few days. At least now I will not look completely pathetic if I attend the rest of the tournament." Jacobson started to stand.

Hesitantly at first, he put weight on the foot. Seeming surprised, he managed his entire weight.

"It is almost as good as new. That doctor really knows his stuff." Jacobson led the ladies to the tent flap and opened it for them without so much as a limp.

"Do not try to change the subject! What do you mean 'if'? Of course you must attend the rest of the tournament!" Calista was never one to let subtle nuance rest.

The group filed out of the tent and started heading toward the castle. Maybe Queen Valerie could confine Princess Alina to her rooms again. I think that was wishful thinking, but one can wish.

"I agree with Cali on this one. You should join us, Jack. It might mean that Lord Holden gets a day off from watching our every move." Princess Alina added while motioning toward me.

The other two looked in my direction for the first time since I joined them both in the medical tent. I think they forgot I was there.

"I am sure Lord Holden does not mind hanging out with us." Lady Calista said with a mischievous look in her eye. I should tread carefully with her.

"I am always ready to do the will of my sovereign," I replied, hoping I did not spring whatever trap she set for me.

"How endearing. Equating hanging out with two beautiful ladies as a duty one has to accomplish." Lady Calista mused in a sarcastic tone.

"That is enough Cali. We do not want him to ask for another duty. I am not sure Lord Garrison would have let us visit the medical tent today if he were assigned to my protection." Princess Alina corrected her friend.

"But I do agree with one thing. Faithfully completing your duty is quite endearing." Alina added with a smile.

Somehow I felt like I was missing part of this conversation. Lord Jacobson and I exchanged a confused glance, but Calista remained silent. I guess whatever Alina meant by that comment held Calista's attention enough to make her speechless.
