THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 97: Stand A Chance
"Since you are already married, I have no choice but to drop the idea I was nurturing."
Shawn knew without being told what that crazy idea was, but before he could say anything, Director Wyatt confirmed it with his next words.
"I was actually thinking if my daughter will stand a chance with such an outstanding man like you."
Director Wyatt’s words were tinged with regret and even Shawn had to sympathize with him against his good judgment.
"I must say I am flattered by your words, but like I said before I am already married and have no interest in fooling around with other women."
This time, Director Wyatt was sincerely stunned by Shawn’s response. He didn’t expect him to maintain his stand despite knowing the huge benefit he stood to gain through a marriage alliance with his daughter.
What baffled him the most was that he didn’t even waver for a moment, nor stop to consider his mouth watering offer. It was like he had already prepared the answer beforehand.
He had lost count of how many young men and families that were cuddling up to him just to get his approval to date his daughter after knowing her status as the heiress to Wyatt Corporations.
But Shawn here was an exception. Despite being separated from his wife for so long, he still hasn’t given up on her.
"I must say I am impressed by your commitment to your marriage. It is something lacking among the younger generations in our society nowadays."
As far as he was concerned, Shawn had passed the first hurdle of his test. And he was ready to call a truce for now.
"Sorry for taking your time for so long. That aside, let’s get down to business."
Shawn released a breath he wasn’t aware he was holding when Director Wyatt finally stirred away from the suffocating topic.
He never knew he was coming for such a emotional roller coaster when he left his office to Wyatt Corporations. Thank goodness, it was finally over.
Taking on a serious expression completely different from the interrogative one he wore before, Director Wyatt cleared his throat, a few times.
"I heard you are interested in the development of the land by the West District."
"That’s right Sir, all we need now is an additional boost in funds to commence the project, as we don’t intend to stop once we start work."
"I must say, nothing escapes you in this city, Director Wyatt. You’ve been away for so long but as soon as you get back, you are already aware of this project," Shawn commended.
"What do you think about a cooperation between Wyatt Corporations and Hudson Corporation?"
This was way beyond Shawn’s expectations. He didn’t expect Director Wyatt to directly propose cooperation.
Knowing that there was nothing like a free lunch, Shawn decided to make things clear, in case he was still fixated on matching him with his daughter.
"I hope this has got nothing to do with your daughter?"
Director Wyatt’s eyes narrowed to slits as he sneered, "I don’t do business based on sentiment, neither do I mix business with pleasure."
Shawn finally felt relieved. "Please accept my apologies for misunderstanding your goodwill, Sir. I’m truly sorry."
Director Wyatt ignored his bluff and said, "Prepare the contract and let’s meet over dinner in a fortnight to go over the cooperation."
Director Wyatt stood up and shook hands with Shawn, signaling the end of the meeting.
"I am looking forward to a happy cooperation,"
"Me too," Shawn responded.
And almost like an afterthought, Director Robin Wyatt said something that ended up ruining the harmonious atmosphere.
"Do send my warmest regards to your wife."
Shawn didn’t miss the twinkle in Director Wyatt’s eyes and he tried to remain unruffled as he replied as politely as he possible could.
"I definitely will when I see her as she is currently not available."
With that, he strode out of the office, imposingly tall, his back as straight as a pole.
"What an interesting gentleman," chuckled Director Wyatt. "No wonder my daughter can’t get over him."
He picked up his phone and tapped a few times on the screen. After the call connected, Director Wyatt said,
"Janice dear, do you have time for an afternoon coffee with a beggarly old man?"
From the speaker, a velvety voice that could melt the stoniest heart sounded,
"Dad, how are you doing and what have you been up to?"
"I’ve never been happier and what do you mean by "what have i been up to?"
"Don’t think I don’t know what you have done behind my back." Kathleen’s tone was full of grieviance. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
"I’ve done nothing to be ashamed of," Director Wyatt claimed righteously. "I only had a few business meetings and that’s all. Are you coming or not?"
Kathleen laughed at his father’s failed attempt to sound innocent. "I still have something to do but I’ll try and wrap it up and meet you as soon as I can."
"I’ll send you the location," he said and hung up.
Kathleen was still thinking if she should check on Old Mrs Hudson or not when she got her father’s call. She had to put it off again to meet her father.
"Who gave you the news that President Hudson came to the office?" Kathleen asked her assistant, Ariel, who was beside her.
"It was Nuela that called to inform me that President Hudson came to the company and met your father since you were not around."
"I wonder what they would have talked about," muttered Kathleen.
Ariel on the other hand, was full of regrets as she missed such a grand opportunity to see the much talked about President Hudson.
From the way Nuela described him, it was almost considered a sin not to fall in love with him.
Kathleen was puzzled, she remembered telling Ariel to cancel their appointment. Why did he later come to the company?
Her eyes turned cold as she glared at Ariel, "Didn’t you cancel the appointment like I asked you to?"
