Chapter 93: Myriad of Possibilities

Shawn’s eyes narrowed as he recalled something, "You said you don’t know her name. Does it mean you haven’t spoken to her yet."

"I have but..," Steffan inhaled a deep breath and blew it out slowly, "she hasn’t given me the green light. I’m afraid she sees me as a joke and is not the least affected by my charm."

Shawn’s frown deepened, "Hold on, don’t tell me you are feeling inferior to a mere woman."

If it were someone else he would have considered it, but Steffan was among the five most sought after bachelors in Baltimore.

"You are everything a woman would want for a man in terms of looks. You’re a renowned doctor, for goodness sake, one of the best the country has ever produced. Not only that, but your family background is there even if you don’t have to rely on the other two."

"She is not a mere woman," Steffan refuted instantly.

He has also considered why he felt this way despite his impressive background, but he could only come up with one answer which he shared with his friend.

"Sometimes I feel I can’t reach her. She is mysterious and appears unattainable and I don’t know how to break through to her."

"I feel pity for you. How can you sell your heart to such a heartless species of a woman?" Shawn sighed and shook his head.

"And here I was thinking that at least one of us has finally found happiness."

"So what do you advice I do in the present circumstance."

"Give her some time and get to know her. I believe if she understands you, she will come down from her high horse."

From Shawn’s words, Steffan was able to grasp something and his head dropped in shame.

"She doesn’t know who I am. I don’t think she even knows my name as we speak," Steffan confessed.

Shawn, "..."

’How did I end up having such a dumb person as a friend?’ Shawn wailed inwardly.

"You mean, she doesn’t even know your name or who you are? You might just end up as a figment of her imagination this way."

"She never gave me the opportunity to introduce myself," Steffan explained. "Maybe if she gets to know who I truly am, she might consider me." With that his mood was lifted again.

"You sure would make a great character in a movie captioned "Fools in love," berated Shawn.

"You don’t have to be so smug about it."

"I can’t help it, buddy," Shawn shrugged.

"The next time you see her, make sure you do the needful. Don’t be intimidated by her appearance or whatever aura she might possess. Or do you need me to step in?"

Steffan’was about saying yes, but suddenly shook both his head and two hands.

"No, no, no," Steffan instantly rejected Shawn’s seemingly harmless offer. "If you do, my love story might end right before it even starts."

Come to think of it, was it really a harmless offer considering the incident that happened years ago when they were much younger before he traveled out to pursue his medical degrees?

A girl who had once had a crush on him for several months and wouldn’t let him be, had come to the house to pay him a visit.

While she was still in his house, Shawn also dropped by for a visit and she met him for the first time.

Before he knew what was happening, with just a single contact with Shawn, the girl didn’t waste a minute to transfer her affection to Shawn.

Although Shawn cruelly rejected her, that was the end of their relationship as she was too ashamed to come back to him.

Their heads both went up at the same time, exchanged a look in shared understanding and burst out laughing.

"I take back my words," Shawn uttered in between laughs, "I won’t step in any longer. You have to sort it out yourself."

"Yeah, I guess."

After quieting down, Steffan couldn’t resist the temptation in his heart. "Any progress with your wife yet?"

As soon as Steffan’s words fell, the once lively atmosphere in the office was inexplicably plunged into despair and Shawn’s expression turned forlorn.

"I’ve not been able to see her since the last time we saw her together."

"Have you tried contacting her?"

Shawn pursed his lips and swayed his head from side to side. "Not yet. For now I want to take it slowly."

"Like you advised, the therapist also suggested I give her some space until I am able to handle whatever she may throw at me."

"But it’s not been easy, knowing that she’s in the same city with me, yet it feels as if she’s millions of miles away."

"The worst part of the whole thing is knowing that she is living in another man’s house. It is killing me slowly."

Ever since that fateful day that he refused to believe her, regret has been a bitter pill he had to swallow every day. If only he had given her a chance to prove her innocence, he would not be left delirious with an overdose of remorse which seems to immobilize him at every given opportunity.

"I heard Wyatt Corps now has a new President, and President Jason has moved to head another branch outside Baltimore."

Steffan’s voice pierced through Shawn’s thoughts but his troubled heart didn’t find solace in those words.

"He will still return someday to reunite with her," snorted Shawn. He even wished something would happen to Jason that would make him not to ever return.

"Have you been able to confirm the relationship between them?" Steffan was seriously worried about his friend who refused to be comforted no matter how hard he tried.

Shawn released a bitter laugh, "What’s there to confirm? They are already living together."

Steffan gave one last shot at helping his friend. "I heard the new President of Wyatt Corps is the lost daughter of Director Wyatt."

Shawn’s eyes became sharp and vigilant. "I know that. What are you insinuating?" A glimmer of hope rose somewhere within his soul as Steffan’s words offered a myriad of possibilities.
