THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 90: Do You Think They Are Shawn’s Children?
That night, Steffan was already in his pajamas and was about to retire to bed, when he heard a knock on the door.
Wondering who could be knocking at this time, he went to the door and was surprised to see his sister in-law at the door through the peephole. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
"It’s you, Candace," he said as he opened the door slightly.
"Why are you not yet in bed?" Worry lines appeared between his brow, she was fagged out but still found time to come to him.
"To be sincere, I’m dead tired," she stretched her dainty arms and yawned, " but there is something I need to discuss with you."
"It’s quite late, can’t it wait till tomorrow? It’s been a hectic day for you and you need to rest."
"No. I’ve been thinking about this matter all day and won’t be able to sleep with it on my mind."
Steffan saw that the situation was serious and opened the door wider to give her access. "Do come in then."
He poured her a glass of water from the water dispenser and sat down on the bed.
After drinking half of the water, Candace took her seat on the single couch in the room.
Steffan waited for her to be seated before asking, "So what is it that troubles you?"
"I don’t know whether I’m wrong," Candace began, "at the party today, there was this boy I saw."
After a brief pause, she continued, "Sophia was actually the one that introduced him to me alongside his sister."
Steffan sat up immediately, his expression unreadable. By this time he had an inkling about who she was referring to.
"What about the boy?" He pretended not to know what she was talking about.
Candace had a pensive look as if she was trying to get the details right. "He looked so much like your friend, President Hudson, and it kept me wondering if he could be related to him."
She paused to watch Steffan’s reaction, when she saw none, she continued.
"But on second thought, President Hudson has never been married and has never been seen with any woman except the young lady of the Beazell family which we both know he doesn’t love."
"Do you think they are Shawn’s children?" Steffan blurted out. He didn’t really see the face of the girl so couldn’t say she bore the same resemblance to Shawn, but the boy was without doubt a child version of Shawn.
Candace hesitated for a few seconds, "I’m not sure, but they look so much like him, especially the boy. I was almost tempted to ask them who their parents were but I didn’t want to scare them."
"You didn’t see their parents at the party?" Could it be that they don’t have a mother? He remembered the boy was also alone at the mall when he saw him.
Candace shook her head, "No, but the girl did say it was their nanny that brought them to the party, she also mentioned that their mother had to work."
That means they are not motherless.
"Why not ask Sophia, she must have seen their parents at the kindergarten and should know who their parents are since they are her friends."
Steffan was hoping that she, as her mother, would be able to get Sophia to reveal those children’s identities. He was careful not to mention that he had failed in getting Sophia to reveal their identities.
"You are right, Sophie should be able to tell me who their parents are. But does President Hudson know about their existence?"
"I don’t think so. He has never mentioned anything of the sort to me."
"Do we need to inform him about it?" Candace suggested, but Steffan had a contrary opinion.
"Not yet, we have to be sure first before taking such a drastic step. What if they both have nothing to do with him?"
"That’s true," agreed Candace."We need to be careful, so we don’t raise a false alarm and end up putting ourselves in a difficult situation."
"Leave everything to me and don’t bother yourself about it. I will look into the matter and update you."
"I will leave everything to you like you said. I trust you."
"Now hurry up and go to your room before your clingy husband will come and close down the small hospital where I earn my living for keeping his wife away from him."
Her nose went up in a sneer, "Who are you kidding? How much do you get from that hospital that will meet up with your lifestyle?"
"You are free to think whatever you want. That’s where I earn my living." Steffan went to open the door for her despite seeing her still seated.
Candace laughed at his action and rose to her feet after drinking the remaining water.
She stopped at the door, "Good night and thanks for your time."
"Rest well." Steffan closed the door and retired to bed. Before he slept he came up with a plan.
The next day at the gate of the school, Steffan said goodbye to Sophia but instead of driving off after he got back in his car, he waited patiently.
He had confirmed from his sister in-law that those kids were Sophia’s friends from Kindergarten.
Much to his elder brother’s amazement, he had volunteered to take Sophia to school that morning. That way, he would not be suspected of loitering around the school premises.
His sister in-law was in full cooperation prior to their conversation the night before.
After waiting for some minutes, a black SUV pulled up beside him and a woman who appeared to be in her fifties came out from the front seat.
The driver went around and opened the door for two children to get down and they happened to be the exact ones he had been waiting for.
He watched the woman leave with them before stopping down from his own car, planning to wait for her until she came out.
