THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 54: Enemies With Benefits
"I see...," Dr Sullivan nodded in understanding. "In other words, you want to win him over, and get him to be loyal to you for life, Right?"
"You can think of it that way," Kathleen opened the pack of hand gloves on the table, took two pairs out of the pack and passed one set to Dr Sullivan.
"Have you ever heard of friends with benefits before?"
"Quite often." Dr Sullivan wondered where she was going with the question.
"Good. I bet you have never heard of enemies with benefits. Am I right?" She raised an eyebrow, waiting for his response.
"Not before today," admitted Dr Sullivan.
"Can I tell you something then, Brad?" She wore the first glove in her left hand. "Not all enemies are doomed for destruction when you finally have the advantage over them."
"There are those that, through their evil intentions, help you accomplish your goals without realizing it; these are the ones you can safely call "enemies with benefits."
She faced him and placed a hand on his shoulder, her purple eyes sparkling intelligently as she smiled. "Moreover, there is no harm in having one more person on our side."
All of a sudden, his throat became dry and he couldn’t get enough air to breathe.
Dr Sullivan has always prided himself in his faithfulness and dedication to his wife and marriage and has never entertained any idea of fooling around, but faced with such a charming goddess, he wasn’t so sure anymore.
Luckily Dr Janice had no ulterior motive towards him and only saw him as a devoted fan, if not he didn’t know what he would do per adventure she made a move on him.
It took him a while before he recovered from the spell of that smile. "But he almost had you killed, Goddess," he finally managed to say, his voice thick and raspy.
"But he didn’t in the long run."
"That’s because he couldn’t, if not I would never get to meet you in this life. What a catastrophic loss it would have been to the entire medical community worldwide and humanity at large."
"I can’t even bear to think about it." Dr Sullivan’s expression was nostalgic at the very thought of that.
"But I’m alright now." Kathleen laughed at the look on his face. She felt warm anyway at such genuine concern showed to her, who wouldn’t love to be cared for anyway?
"Thank God you escaped, but you don’t have to let him off just like that," insisted Dr Sullivan.
"Who said anything about letting him off? It’s just that I want to get myself a flock and not just a bird with just a single sling from my stone."
"I see, but even if you don’t want to do anything to him, he can’t escape the law."
"That’s true. No one is above the law and must face the consequences of their action one way or the other." Kathleen was not an advocate of bending the rules to favour anyone and believed that one must bear the consequences of their actions if they dared to take those actions.
"However, you must understand that in this case, the one that attempted to kill me is not my main target, but the person or persons behind him. Those are my real targets."
"As for him, I’ll find a way out for him for the time being, in order to accomplish my purpose. If I turn him in now, things might not go the way I want," she said as she pushed in the escaping strands of her voluminous hair properly into the surgical cap.
"As much as you want to drop the charges, there were still many witnesses to the crime," Dr Sullivan pointed out.
"Also, don’t forget that we only stalled the police this long because he has been in a coma. Once they know that he is awake they will come after him."
"You are also right there. But with me not pressing charges, he might end up with a lighter sentence."
’It’s evident her mind is already made up," Dr Sullivan sighed in defeat as he failed to convince her otherwise.
"I believe you know what you are doing, and I can only go along with you on this. Just know that I am with you all the way," he promised in resignation and put on the second pair of his surgical gloves, adjusted his mask, then followed Kathleen to the operating table where the doctor to perform the surgery was already waiting.
About two hours later, the implant was done successfully and Spider was wheeled back to his ward.
While walking out, Dr Sullivan saw Dr Steffan, Old Mrs Hudson’s attending doctor.
"Good day Chief," Dr Steffan greeted politely.
"Hello Dr Steffan."
"I finally got you. I was just coming from your office and was informed you had to witness an emergency surgery. Is it done?"
"Yeah, we just finished and I was on my way to my office."
Before asking why Dr Steffan was looking for him, he remembered he had asked him to get the sample from old Mrs Hudson’s lymph nodes for the biopsy as per Kathleen’s instructions.
Kathleen happened to come out of the theater at that moment, saw Dr Sullivan standing in the hallway with two other doctors and walked up to them.
She had waited behind to have a talk with the surgeon that performed the operation and had asked Dr Sullivan to go ahead to his office.
Dr Steffan raised his head and his eyes lit the moment it fell on Kathleen’s enchanting face. Was he still in the hospital or in a fairytale where a goddess just dropped from the skies. Who was this stunning beauty?
The other doctor who was with Dr Steffan was also dazzled by Kathleen’s peerless beauty and made a silent "wow".
Dr Steffan stretched out his hand for a handshake. "Pleased to meet you. I’m doctor Steffan and you are..."
"Someone you dare not mess with," warned a deep masculine voice in crisp tones.
