Chapter 55: The Man In Your Life

"Shawn?" Steffan’s chest drew back in surprise, scowling at the person that stepped right in front of him and successfully intercepted his outstretched hand from being shaken by the gorgeous beauty.

He didn’t know where Shawn suddenly materialized from and worst still, he couldn’t understand why he was even acting funny.

If he remembers correctly, Shawn should be in his office now. He had agreed to wait for him in his office when he came out to look for Chief after getting the result of the biopsy.

"Move aside dude, can’t you see I’m in the middle of something?" he demanded impatiently. After the initial surprise, he stretched his neck sideways, still trying to steal a glance at the lady.

Dr Sullivan, who was also surprised at Shawn’s sudden appearance and action, saw that the situation was about to get awkward and quickly spoke up.

"How about the result of the test I asked you to do, Dr Steffan? Can we discuss it in my office now?" He placed an arm over Steffan’s shoulders hoping he would cooperate with him.

Steffan was no fool and understood what his Chief was trying to do. "Sure," he agreed but not before giving Shawn a "you owe me an explanation look," then turned around to go with Dr Sullivan.

Kathleen was also interested in the test results but just as she was about to leave with them, Shawn stopped her, with a pleading look, he requested, "Can I see you briefly?"

She hesitated, glanced back at Dr Sullivan and the rest, who had also stopped to wait for her. "You can go ahead without me, we’ll talk later," she excused herself from the group in order to hear what Shawn had to say.

Shawn’s watchful eyes followed them until he completely lost sight of them before turning back to face Kathleen who has been observing him quietly with a sympathetic gaze. She obviously found his action childish and couldn’t help but wonder what was going on in that mind of his.

His gaze softened to some extent when he saw the way she was looking at him and he asked, "How are you today?"

Kathleen; "..."

"I’m good," came Kathleen’s nonchalant response.

He scanned her appearance from head to toe and gave a satisfactory nod. "I can see you rested well last night."

At Shawn’s word, a faint blush spread over Kathleen’s face when she remembered how she had gone to sleep last night. She quickly covered it up with a question.

"Why are you in the hospital so early? Are you not supposed to be in your office by this time, President Hudson?"

Shawn chuckled at Kathleen’s failed attempt to brush off her embarrassment. "I followed that scoundrel from the manor after he came to take Nana’s fluid sample."

"Scoundrel?" Kathleen’s forehead furrowed in inquiry.

It was then Shawn realized Steffan returned from abroad after Kathleen was missing, so she might not be aware of their friendship.

"Dr Steffan of course." Don’t tell me you didn’t notice the suggestive smile he was giving you earlier on? His intentions were so obvious that even a blind man could see it," Shawn rattled his friend off, his initial anger returning when he recalled the way Steffan was behaving towards Kathleen.

"Oh I see..."

He was wondering what she saw and couldn’t help but ask, "See what?"

"You are definitely jealous," Kathleen exposed him on the spot.

"I can’t be jealous of what is already mine," he refuted arrogantly. "I just want you to be careful so that your kind nature will not be taken advantage of."

Shawn did not even spare his best friend of several years when it came to recovering his lost territory.

"No need to be worried about me. I don’t have the leisure of fooling around with men," Kathleen dismissed. "Moreover I am satisfied and very comfortable with the one in my life. I just need to focus on my career and family."

Shawn felt good, at least she knew what was good for her he thought. Believing she was referring to him as the man in her life, he became conceited and asked, donning a smug smile on his already charming face.

"May I know who the man in your life is?"

Kathleen looked around and saw the people passing by casting admiring glances at them.

Some were even whispering to themselves, "What a well matched couple. Both of them are elegant and dignified; they look so good together." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

Kathleen was irritated by Shawn riding on the wings of those innocent comments and getting smug, so she didn’t hold back as she outrightly declared,

"Just know that, that man is definitely not you, Shawn Hudson," she sneered as if she was looking at a joke.

"If you’ll excuse me, I have other things to attend to." She walked off leaving Shawn behind with a shocked expression.

His eyes darted around in apprehension and to his greatest relief, no one was close by to witness the scene of Kathleen telling him off.

He appreciated her in his heart for leaving him a little dignity and his mouth quirked up in a subtle smile.

However, when he fully understood what Kathleen meant, his face was as dark as the bottom of a charred pot.

’I’m not the man in her life? Then who is?’ His mind narrowed in on President Jason. "No this can’t be. She is still married to me and dare not entangle with another man."

With determined steps he hurried after her but couldn’t find her. ’She must be headed to Dr Sullivan’s office’. He changed direction from going towards the elevator to where he saw the others turn.

The aura around him was chilling and could be felt miles away making him unapproachable.

It was so strong that a child who was screaming in his mother’s arms suddenly kept quiet, hugging the mom in a tight embrace when he happened to turn his head in their direction.

"Am I that scary?" he wondered. "Kathleen, see what you’ve turned me into," he groaned inwardly.
