THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 42: Now Be A Good Boy And Take Me To Nana
An enthusiastic smile flickered across Shawn’s already handsome face, "She came to Baltimore specially to treat Nana and from what she said, she’ll not be going back soon as she has other matters to attend to here in Baltimore."
He straightened his suit and lifted his chin before announcing,
"And I have promised myself to give her my unreserved assistance in any way she might be needing it for as long as she’s in Baltimore."
He paused, took a look at the exquisite leather watch on his wrist and furrowed his brow, "But I wonder what is still keeping her?"
"Waiting on her throughout her stay in Baltimore is a great sacrifice, I must say," commended Kathleen with a mock sincerity.
The corners of her mouth lifted in a mischievous smirk. "You are still very smart after so many years, Shawny." She had deliberately used the appellation "Shawny" knowing fully well that he hated being called that.
"Kathleen!" Shawn’s voice sounded gruff as he glared at Kathleen. He didn’t believe that after that long speech, Kathleen did not still take him seriously.
Kathleen was not bothered by the warning in his voice, but rather decided to end the game and get on to business. She wore a charming professional smile, extended her hand for a handshake and announced;
"I am Dr Janice; the very same person your family has been poaching for so long concerning your grandmother’s sickness and I’m here to see her and commence treatment as soon as possible."
Shawn’s brow shot up in disbelief, then narrowed into a subtle frown, he even forgot to take Kathleen’s outstretched hand.
Kathleen, who had already envisaged such a reaction, dropped her hands and brought out her iPad. She tapped on it to her mail box containing her chat history with Shawn, then handed it over to him.
Shawn received the iPad with a skeptical look and tilted his head to the side, his dumbstruck eyes flickered between Kathleen and the iPad as he read the mails.
This mail is indeed Dr Janice’s, how come Kathleen has access to it? Is it possible she is Dr Janice?
He suddenly thought of something and his eyes scanned over the screen and settled on the display picture, it was indeed Kathleen’s photo. Shawn was again drawn in by the regal confident aura emanating from her purple orbs. It exuded a unique sense of intelligence and also gave a peaceful vibe.
He forced himself to look away. "The last time I checked, you were just a common researcher in a Pharmaceutical company."
"Duh... That was six years ago. You don’t expect me to be on the same spot for six years, do you?"
Shawn was lost in thought again. ’What has this woman been up to all these years. It’s obvious she hasn’t been idle.’
"Do you need to see my ID card and medical license, President Hudson?" Kathleen knew he wouldn’t believe her easily, so she reached into her handbag to get her ID card.
"Here is it. You can also double check by confirming the database of College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners & Acupuncturists of British Columbia (CTCMA). With your ability I’m sure you will not have a problem with that.
"There will be no need for that, I believe you."
"Huh?"
It was Kathleen’s turn to be rendered speechless. How could he believe her just like that. The Shawn she knows would directly do a thorough investigation before taking such a risk. Unfortunately, he never did when it came to the affair six years ago. A cold mist clouded over her heart at the thought and her countenance dropped.
"Is anything the matter?" Shawn peered down at Kathleen, a quizzical frown forming on his face. "Did I say something wrong?"
"No, not at all." She pulled herself back and resumed her previous vibe. "Now be a good boy and take me to Nana."
Shawn didn’t know what to make of her attitude, he shrugged his shoulder. "After you."
"What is going on there?" Mrs Joanne Hudson who was tired of waiting for Shawn to usher in the doctor asked impatiently, as she appeared from inside the house.
On sighting Kathleen, she went limp with fright.
"What is she doing here, is she not supposed to be dead?" She asked as soon as she recovered from the shock and confirmed that it was a living Kathleen that was standing before her.
"Sorry to disappoint you Mrs Hudson. I’m well and alive."
Kathleen had no idea Joanne hated her this much. From her reaction just now, one couldn’t help but think that she even preferred her dead.
"Hurry up and get lost, I can’t stand the sight of you?"
"Are you sure you want me to get lost, I hope you will not regret this?" Kathleen asked, with a mysteriously smile.
"What is there to regret?" Joanne retorted flippantly.
"Mom... Can you please control yourself, we already know she was framed back then."
"Whatever, I still don’t like her," Joanne declared stubbornly, "I will not allow her to have anything to do with you again."
"Enough Mom," Shawn’s eyes hardened and narrowed into slits. "I was deceived once which made me lose her and I will not fall victim again. Be mindful of how you speak to her from now onwards."
The warning in Shawn’s words was unmistakable, but Joanne wasn’t someone to easily give up. "Are you threatening your own mother for a mere nobody? I can see that her spell over you hasn’t broken after all these years."
"Whatever..." Shawn said and took Kathleen’s hand to go into the house.
Kathleen could not believe the scene playing out before her. Firstly, she didn’t expect Shawn would believe she was Dr Janice without further proof and also speaking up for her so passionately was completely beyond her expectations.
She felt warm inside but she didn’t allow it to last for long. She was no longer that naive, emotion-controlled silly girl that was easily deceived and hurt in the past.
As a result, her expression regained its normal coldness and was distant as she allowed Shawn to lead her into the house.
