THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 311: Illegitimate Daughter
After some time, his gaze rested on Lauren’s chestnut-colored hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders, framing her lovely warm amber eyes that were now filled with concern.
"Are you a part of my lost memory?" he suddenly asked, his voice filled with uncertainty.
"I’ll leave that for you to figure out. Whatever I tell you now, will not be what you want to hear, so it’s best we wait until you are fully recovered."
Steffan’s face darkened and just as he was about to give a retort, Lauren’s phone rang.
"Hello, Mom," Lauren said into the phone.
"Yes, I’m with him now. Ok," Lauren said and handed the phone to Steffan who raised his brow.
"Please take it, it’s for you," she Said.
He threw her a suspiciousLook. "Who is on the line?"
"You’ll find out as soon as you answer the call," Lauren said, her tone equally challenging.
"Hello," Steffan mumbled hesitantly into the phone after collecting it from Lauren.
"Hello, dear," an overly sweet voice filtered into Steffan’s ear and a faint scowl appeared on his face.
"When will you stop being so dramatic, mom? Why didn’t you call my line directly?"
"I didn’t want to disturb your sleep in case you were asleep." Sarah replied in a carefree manner.
"Listen son, I’ve sent Lauren over to stay with you. Please take care of her and don’t scare her away," she more or less instructed.
Steffan: "..."
"Who is the invalid here and if there’s anybody that needs to be taken care of, shouldn’t it be me?"
"Lauren is going through a lot right now, son and shouldn’t be agitated," Sarah continued as if she had not heard Steffan’s complaint.
"I have some errands to run till late in the afternoon and I won’t be back on time," Sarah said before hanging up the call. She didn’t even wait for Steffan to agree or refuse.
Looking at the "call ended" displayed on the screen in his hand, Steffan was so pissed that he felt an instant headache coming.
He has always known that his mother was very strange and unreliable especially when it came to reasoning with her, but this was the height of it.
Instead of being here to take care of her sick son, she is busy placing outrageous demands on him. Which mother does that? Of course only Mrs Sarah Rosse would pull such a stunt.
Not only did she not come around, but she sent a total stranger over for him to take care of. Who has ever heard of such a thing? A sick person taking care of a healthy person?
If she is sick shouldn’t she be admitted into the hospital?"
Glaring at the lady who was so relaxed as if whatever was going on had nothing to do with her, Steffan got more angry.
"How are you acquainted with my parents?"
"We are not just mere acquaintances. They are my parents," Lauren stated calmly, causing Steffan’s poor brain to reel in confusion and for a moment, could not grasp what she meant by that.
As far as he knew, his parents had just two of them as children— himself and Stanley, his elder brother who was already married to Candace.
Steffan couldn’t help but laugh. No wonder his mother seemed to care about her so much. They were both possessed by the same spirit.
"Do you mean to say that they are your godparents?" He asked, as that seemed to be the only logical explanation.
"They are not my godparents," Lauren again stated flatly and the next minute Steffan’s eyes widened inexplicably at a sudden realization and almost immediately, the corners of his lips curled up in a disdainful sneer.
"Are you some illegitimate daughter of one of my parents?"
Lauren was struck speechless.
"I never knew you had such wild imaginations, young man. I think you should get some sleep to cool off your hyperactive brain."
Steffan: "...."
It was Steffan’s turn to be rendered speechless and didn’t know what to say again. He had exhausted all his options, yet she didn’t admitted to any.
But it was quite strange though that he didn’t feel repulsed by her presence neither could he bring himself to really get angry at her for long despite all the nonsense she had been spewing since she came.
Rather he was more intrigued by her.
"Then who the hell are you?"
With composed charm, Lauren just lifted one of her legs and gingerly crossed it on the other, while staring deeply into Steffan’s eyes.
Steffan found himself lost in those large amber eyes that seemed to penetrate deep into his soul and was forced to look away when he heard her say,
"I am Lauren Holmes, the biological daughter of Mr and Mrs Holmes. I own a coffee shop somewhere down town and deeply in love with my fiancé, so don’t think too much. All you need to know for now is that I am not here to take advantage of you like a certain someone, but to help you," she said as if she was giving the weather report for the day.
Hearing her mention her parents, his heart suddenly felt at ease. At least, his parents had not disappointed him and were still what he knew them to be.
But strangely the part where she mentioned having a fiancé, whom she loved so much didn’t seem to sit well with him. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
But wait, shouldn’t he be happy, knowing that she was not one of those crazy girls that wouldn’t give him a breathing space with their endless obsession over his looks?
Maybe she’s is just pretending,’ he concluded, but his heart said otherwise. Those eyes had a certain confidence and firmness that concretized her words.
He shook his head and stared back at the girl whose attention was already focused on something on her phone as if no one was there.
He sneaked a peek and saw that she was actually playing his favourite game on the phone.
He was taken aback. Was it a coincidence? Only his best friend, Shawn knew about his addiction to this particular game, so how come she is also playing it and from the way her hand was moving on the keypad, he could tell she was not a novice in the game.
"Yes!" She suddenly exclaimed after a few minutes and just then, he heard a robotic voice from the phone, announce,
"Chapter three cleared, proceed to Chapter four."
"Boom!"
Something exploded in Steffan’s brain. He couldn’t believe his eyes neither his ears. He had never been able to get past Chapter two with all his abilities, how come she easily passed Chapter three with all its intricate levels, and was now in four. With just two Chapters left to reach the final Chapter, doesn’t that mean she is a genius?
Only his best friend was this awesome especially when it came to playing this game. He was already a champ having gotten to "The End" which was the last Chapter.
He wanted to ignore her just the way she ignored him after her long speech in the name of an introduction, but curiosity still got the best of him at the end of the day.
"How did you do it?"
"Do what?" Lauren asked, feigning confusion.
"How did you get past Chapter three?"
"It’s quite simple," Lauren said flippantly.
