Chapter 307: I didn’t Also Lose My Memory

"How is your life miserable? What is wrong with calling in once in a while to check on her grandchildren?"

"That is a far cry from "once in a while" Mom. She practically lives in my house, Mom! I’m even thinking of relocating out of the city with my wife, let me see how she will be free to gallivant around the world."

Monica couldn’t believe her ears. "Hope it’s not what I’m thinking."

Kilian had a mischievous smile as he started walking towards the door before releasing what was on his mind. "Of course, it is. We are leaving her grandchildren behind so that she will be able to fulfill her life goal in peace."

"Kilian!"

"Goodnight, Dad, goodnight, Sis," Kilian threw back without looking back and the door closed behind him just like that.

"Did you hear your son, William?"

"Give him some space, dear. He is right," her husband said softly.

"What! You’re supporting him abandoning his children just to go and enjoy with his wife? Which parent does that?"

"They won’t be abandoned. You’re there if his mother-in-law gets tired of taking care of the children." William tried to hide his laughter with a fake yawn.

"I think it’s about time we all retired for the night." He patted his wife’s arm and stood to his feet. "See you upstairs, darling."

Monica: "..."

"Why do I have so many people around me that are constantly giving me a headache?" she held her forehead and whined.

She looked quite pathetic and exhausted as she also stood up to join her husband.

’Gosh!’ She didn’t remember Lauren was still there. With an apologetic look, she turned to Lauren. "I’m sorry dear, that did not include you."

"It’s OK, mom. I’m not taking it personal," Lauren said with the ghost of a smile.

"We know we always make you worry over us. But the sad truth is that, who will worry over us if not you?" She added to liven up the atmosphere.

She didn’t want her family coming to a standstill because of her.

What could be more frustrating than seeing everyone being careful and edgy around her because they didn’t want to say or do the supposedly "wrong thing" to make her sad.

That was why she loved her brother Kilian so much. He would always joke about everything and anything.

He could literally get on the nerves of a corpse and it would be forced to come back to live from anger... she sometimes wondered if he possessed such ability.

He was the best to have around in sad times.

Instead of keeping a long face and making you feel more depressed in the name of sympathizing with you, he will act natural as if nothing happened.

But unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said about him when dealing with his enemies or anyone that tried to harm his siblings.

He was ruthless to the core and could snap off the neck of an enemy in a second. Maybe it was because of the special training he received as an undercover agent who was always going on dangerous missions.

Up till now, nobody in the family knows that Benita who was taken away in a supposedly police van, was not in the hospital but in Kilian’s custody.

"Let me see you off to your room." Lauren heard her mother say.

"I can always find my way there, Mom. I didn’t also lose my memory, she joked. "Goodnight."

"Alright, goodnight and don’t stay up for too long. You need to rest too," Monica admonished before going to secure the door with the back lock.

**********

The next morning Lauren awoke to the blinding light shining through her window. Surprisingly she slept well without any nightmares and woke up as late as 9 am.

She was sure her parents had given an order that she must not be disturbed if not someone would have come to wake her since.

She took her time to decongest her mind of thoughts of yesterday’s events when they came rushing in like a flood.

"I’m not going to dwell on the past but take one day at a time," she said to herself.

First on her list was to call Sarah to find out about how she was doing. It was not easy sitting up all night watching over someone. But she was only going to do that after taking a refreshing cup of her favorite choco drink.

Everyone was expecting her to be moping around the house, burdened by the present situation, but she was going to shock all of them.

After a quick visit to the bathroom to freshen up and brush her teeth, Lauren padded softly to the kitchen, the cool tiles soothing beneath her bare feet.

She exchanged greetings with one of the maids that work in the kitchen and went to the shelf.

With practiced ease, she measured out a generous portion of chocolate powder into her favorite mug, the rich aroma wafting through the air as she added hot water and stirred. She added some marshmallows toppings to give extra boost to the flavor and her beloved choco drink was ready.

Carrying her mug back to her room, Lauren pushed open the curtains wider, and the crisp morning air flooded into the room.

The gentle breeze softly caressed her cheeks as she stood directly in front of the window.

After spending some seconds there, she settled herself on her cozy recliner by her bed and reached for her phone on the drawer to call Steffan’s mom.

"Hello, mom?" She said softly.

"Lauren, dear, how are you this morning?" Came the tired voice from the other end of the line.

"I’m fine, and you? I hope you were able to catch a wink of sleep." Lauren asked with genuine concern.

"I tried, but it was a very long night as I kept waking up to check on Steffan. But Candace will be coming over after settling her children so I can go home to rest," Sarah informed.

"That’s better. At least that way you can get some rest."

"Are you coming over to see Steffan?"

"I don’t think that’s a good idea for now. Maybe tomorrow or next."

There was a brief pause before Sarah responded, her voice thick with emotion. "I understand, Mom will be looking forward to your visit, dear."

"Have you had breakfast?" Lauren carefully steered the conversation from Steffan before Sarah will start convincing her to come over.

"Yes, your father inlaw brought breakfast from home for me when he came to the hospital this morning."

"That’s very sweet of him," Lauren said with a smile but at the hospital, Sarah felt a cold gaze beside her and turned to see her husband’s unhappy face. "What?" She gestured silently with her hand.

"How can you be so greedy and at the same time selfish? Why did you refer to me as her father inlaw and yourself as mom?"

"I’m on a call, David. Please, behave yourself," Sarah cautioned, no longer making an effort to conceal their little quarrel from Lauren, who already knew they were at it again. She had sensed it coming when Sarah referred to David as her father inlaw.
