THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 308: You’ve Been Quite Busy
Lauren’s lips spasmed in a smile as he heard them arguing like children and like always, she had to step in as the peacemaker.
"Mom, is that dad’s voice that I’m hearing at the background?"
"Don’t mind the old man that is still behaving like a child," Sarah hurriedly threw out.
"Please can I speak with dad?" Lauren requested.
Sarah reluctantly passed the phone to her husband, but not before saying, "next time if you want to speak with him, call his line. I don’t want my battery to run down."
"Yes, mom. But for now let’s borrow your phone, Ok?" Lauren coaxed.
"Good morning, dad," Lauren said as soon as she heard David’s voice.
"Morning my child. How are you?"
"I’m fine and I slept well in case you are worried about me," Lauren infused as much excitement as possible into her voice that should leave no one in doubt of her present state.
David was still skeptical but chose to believe her. "I’m happy to hear that you are doing fine."
He has been worried all night about the poor girl, especially when this morning, his wife shared with him the contents of their conversation yesterday before Lauren left in the night.
"Mom said you brought her breakfast, dad, Thank you for taking care of her."
"She is my wife after all, I’m the only one who can give her the best care," David boasted.
"You are right, dad," Lauren laughed and could imagine the sneer on Sarah’s face as David would face her with his "did you hear that?" look.
Before they would force her to be part of another bout of argument which she was sure was bound to happen Lauren acted fast.
"I have to go now, dad. I can hear someone knocking on my door. Say bye to mom for me, and do continue to take care of her."
Lauren hung up leaving the couple to sort out themselves.
"What’s the noise about?" Steffan, who was forced to wake up from the couple’s loud whisperings, rubbed his head in confusion.
"Son."
"Steffan?" They called almost simultaneously, instantly abandoning their quibble and rushed to his side.
"How are you?" Sarah asked, her concern evident in her tone.
"I’m not fine. My head aches."
Sarah quickly placed her palm on his head, her brow furrowing. "Your head aches? Thank God you don’t have a fever. But let me quickly call the doctor."
"No need, I’m a doctor myself and should know what is wrong with me," Steffan stopped Sarah who was about pressing the bell to summon the doctor.
"But you just had surgery and... wait! You can remember that?" David’s eyes glinted with a special light that was difficult to conceal.
"Remember what?" Steffan asked, as he gave his mother a quizzical look.
"That you’re a doctor?" Sarah said, barely able to contain her excitement.
Steffan stared at his parents speechlessly. He was the one that had an accident. Why are they behaving as if their own brains were affected? "Of course, I’m a doctor. Why would I not remember something as important as that?"
"Then why don’t you remember Lauren who is equally very important?"
Two straight lines appeared between Steffan’s brows. "Lauren? Who is that and how is she important?"
Sarah’s heart dropped. He doesn’t even have an impression of her name either. "It’s...."
"The young lady that was with you when you regained consciousness yesterday," David quickly said before Sarah would go ahead and reveal that Lauren was Steffan’s fiancé and cause him to start thinking too much.
"Oh she. That’s because I’ve never seen her before so I’m not expected to know her. You only remember who you have seen."
"That’s alright, son. Do you need us to get anything for you to relieve your headache." David asked, putting an end to the toxic conversation.
"Nothing. I just need to rest." Speaking of rest, Steffan noticed his mother’s pallid appearance. "Mom, you go and rest. You look more haggard than a sick person."
He had seen his mother sitting up occasionally last night each time he woke up and doubted if she had any sleep.
Sarah felt warm at her son’s concern. He might have forgotten some things but his kind and thoughtful nature was still intact. That is a good thing.
"I’ll go as soon as you take something, dear. You’ve not taken anything since the ... accident, yesterday."
"I can only be at ease when I see you take something, son."
Remembering his mother’s persistent and stubborn nature, Steffan sighed. He doesn’t even have the strength to argue with her so he relented.
"Alright, just get me something light that will not require me to chew. Any soup would do."
"Alright son. I’ll quickly arrange that," Sarah picked up her bag and was about rushing out of the ward.
"I will only take it on the condition that you ask someone else to prepare it while you get some rest."
"Of course, I’ll go home and rest directly. I will ask your brother’s wife to prepare it for you immediately."
"I’ve not seen Stanley and his wife. Did he travel?"
"They were here for the whole of yesterday but you were mostly asleep."
"But he promised to come by this morning."
Just as David finished speaking, the door opened and Stanley, his wife and two children entered.
"Uncle Steffan!" Sophia screamed excitedly as soon as she saw her uncle propped up in bed and alive.
She had been seated at the front of the church with other children who were part of the bridal train and had seen when that wicked aunty shot him yesterday.
She also saw them carrying him out of the church and when he didn’t return home with her parents last night, she had thought he died but her parents told her he was alive and receiving treatment in the hospital.
She didn’t believe them until now that she could see with her eyes that he was alive.
"Be careful sweetheart, your uncle is not strong enough," Candace held Sophia back and gently walked with her towards the bed.
"Hey, sunshine. How are you? But you seemed to have grown a lot since the last time I saw you. You even look more beautiful." Steffan said looking at Sophia in wonder.
"What are you saying uncle I’ve always been like this," Sophia grinned.
"And who is this beautiful angel you came with, Stanley? She looks so much like Candace."
Candace shared a confused look with her husband.
When Sarah called to tell them that Steffan woke up and had lost some parts of his memory they didn’t know it was this serious.
Not only did he forget Lauren, but their youngest child Daniel.
"Uncle, this is Danny, my younger brother. Why are you calling him a girl?" Sophia corrected.
"Stanley, you have another child already? And he’s even grown up. I must say you’ve been quite busy," he joked, giving his brother a teasing smile.
"How old is he?"
"He will be four in a month’s time and you promised to be back for his birthday after the..."
"Sophia, can you please come with me so that we can get something for your uncle?"
"Sure, grandma," Sophia did not get to finish her explanation as she was quickly whisked away from the ward.
