Chapter 288: The Birthday Celebration

Fairview Villa was enveloped in a calm and peaceful atmosphere as the unique winter morning dawned.

Sunlight streamed through trees covered in frost, casting a gentle glow that created gold and silver hues throughout the room.

Shawn, wrapped in the warmth of his blankets, opened his eyes to a day woven with the delicate threads of joy and farewell for him.

The joy that illuminated his eyes originated from the knowledge that it was Eleanor and Elvis’s birthday today.

The very thought of the surprise he had planned for them brought a genuine smile to his face, and he couldn’t help but envisage the joy that would light up their eyes when they would see what he had prepared for them.

Yet, beneath the surface of that excitement, lingered a subtle melancholy— today also marked his last day at Fairview Villa,

While he had been looking forward to one, he had dreaded the other which was bound to happen anyway, except Kathleen changed her mind which was regrettably impossible.

However before leaving, he made up his mind to make the most of the day while it lasted.

It was a very special day for him as he was experiencing his children’s birthday for the first time and thus was determined to make it memorable for them.

With the help of the staff in the Wyatt’s household, he had been able to transform the living room into a little paradise.

Ribbons, banners, balloons and different cartoon characters adorned the living room, and the aroma of freshly baked pancakes and sizzling bacon wafted through the air from the kitchen.

As the clock struck 7, Elvis and Eleanor, still in their pajamas, emerged from their rooms rubbing their sleepy eyes.

As soon as they were spotted at the head of the staircase, Shawn gave the signal and the staff chorused the all too familiar birthday song.

"Happy Birthday to you."

"Happy birthday to you."

"Happy birthday, happy birthday."

"Happy birthday to you."

All the drowsiness disappeared from Elvis and Eleanor’s eyes as soon as they heard the birthday song and their eyes instantly lit up at the festive scene in the living room.

"Happy birthday my princess, happy birthday Champ!" Shawn grinned as he enveloped both of them in a warm embrace.

"Happy birthday my darlings," Kathleen said as she also caught them in a tight embrace after they left their father’s hug, showering kisses on their cute little faces.

"Thank you, daddy. Thank you mummy. Thank you everyone," they appreciated.

They went to meet their grandparents, then Jason to receive their blessings.

As they took in the colorful decorations and the breakfast spread adorned with candles on the dining table, they couldn’t help but beam with smiles.

"Wow!" Eleanor, the foodie between the two, exclaimed.

"Mummy, you prepared all these for us?"

"Actually it’s your dad’s handwork, with a little help from the staff," Kathleen clarified, darting a glance at Shawn who winked seductively at her before saying to the children,

"It’s a surprise breakfast for my two favorite birthday stars. How about you freshen up and come back down to dig in before we head to the orphanage later?"

"Yayyy!" Eleanor and Elvis rushed forward, wrapping their father’s waist in a tight embrace. Shawn chuckled, basking in the warmth of their love.

Afterwards, the family of seven settled down to enjoy the delightful morning feast, laughter and joy accompanying every bite of the specially prepared breakfast.

Shawn, savoring the moment, couldn’t help but have a nostalgic feeling in his heart.

He couldn’t remember the last time he had such a moment in the Hudson family where everyone would sit together and share something as simple as breakfast.

As the pancakes and bacon disappeared one after the other and the laughter lingered, he felt a profound gratitude in his heart.

This was what family was about— sharing moments of joy and perhaps pain if need be,

The children had taken the day off from school to celebrate and like they do every year, they had chosen to celebrate it in an orphanage home with other less privileged children.

This tradition was borne from the fact that their mother had a past linked to the orphanage.

The sweet thing about celebrating at the orphanage was that instead of looking forward to people gifting them, they derived joy more from handing over gift boxes to those less privileged children and the smile and appreciation that would follow made it worthwhile.

So later in the day, they headed to the orphanage with their mother and this time, it was more fun as they got to hang out with their father on their birthday for the first time.

They all arrived at the orphanage around noon and with the help of the bigger children at the orphanage, they offloaded the limousine which was packed full with gift boxes and a huge cake,

The atmosphere at the orphanage buzzed with excitement as the kids gathered around the visitors, curious and eager to know why so many gifts were suddenly being brought in.

"Hello children," said one of the caretakers of the orphanage.

"This is Elvis, his sister Eleanor and their parents. Today is their birthday and they have decided to celebrate this special day with all of us at the orphanage. Isn’t that awesome?" She asked and received a thunderous "awesome!" from the excited children.

After announcing their purpose of visiting, the celebration started with some music and they all danced to it.

Shawn was surprised that even Elvis let go of his reservations and freely mingled with the other kids.

Amid laughter and dancing, Elvis and Eleanor led the group in singing "Happy Birthday" to all the children at the orphanage whose birthdays might have gone uncelebrated or even unnoticed in the past.

Together, they all cut the huge birthday cake that was filled with as many candles as it could take.

They all made a wish and blew off the candle.

It wasn’t a surprise though that both Elvis and Eleanor wished that their parents would reconcile quickly so that they could finally live together as one big happy family.

Later on, Elvis and Eleanor, wearing matching smiles, distributed the gifts to the children who were ecstatic on receiving the gifts from them.

The gifts were enough to go round and they even had some left which they handed over to the caregivers of the orphanage.

While the music was on, they shared a sumptuous buffet together and everyone was given the liberty to choose what they wanted to eat and drink.

Seeing the genuine happiness on the faces of the children from the orphanage, Shawn, who was witnessing this for the first time, felt warm in his heart and he couldn’t help but see the reason why they had chosen to celebrate their birthday this way.

He applauded his two wonderful and generous children and didn’t fail to praise Kathleen who had brought them up to be this wonderful.

As the day unfolded, Shawn continued to marvel at the simple yet profound joy of giving and receiving love.

His two young children have taught him this great lesson that he will never forget for as long as he lived.

But as they say, everything has an end, and so it was as the children from the orphanage reluctantly bade goodbye to Elvis and Eleanor when it was time for them to leave,

They were not the only people who wished the day would never end. Shawn was also hit with the stark reality that he was soon going to be the next to miss the conpany of his two lovely children.

As they left the orphanage, Shawn who had yet another surprise for them ordered the driver to drive to the amusement park.

The air was crisp and the night was bathed in the soft glow of winter lights as the family of four ventured into the amusement park.

Shawn, bundled up in a warm coat led his excited family through the park, their breath forming delicate clouds in the chilly air.

The twinkle of fairy lights and the joyful hum of the carousel beckoned, but Shawn had something different in mind.

"Guess what we’re going to do next, guys?" he teased, his eyes glinting with anticipation.

Eleanor and Elvis exchanged eager glances, bundled up in their winter coats and hats. "What is it, Dad?" Elvis asked, his eyes wide with curiosity.

Shawn grinned mischievously. "We’re going to try the winter carnival games!" He announced. "Who’s up for some snowball tossing and maybe winning some prizes?"

Excitement lit up the children’s faces as they approached a festive booth adorned with snowflakes and twinkling lights.

A cheerful game attendant welcomed them, explaining the rules of the snowball toss.

With a playful spirit, Shawn handed Eleanor and Elvis soft snowballs, and the trio stepped up to the line.

Laughter bubbled up as they aimed at the colorful targets, their snowballs sailing through the crisp winter air.

They all cheered as Elvis’s snowball hit a target with a satisfying thud, earning a delighted "Yes" from him.

Eleanor, determined to match her brother, focused on her aim and sent a snowball soaring.

After a round of cheerful games, they gathered their winnings of small plush snowmen and twinkling trinkets.

Kathleen and the children’s cheeks were flushed red and Shawn couldn’t take his eyes off them.

Impulsively, he reached out and enveloped the trio in a cozy embrace placing a kiss on the children’s head.

"Mommy too," Eleanor shrieked.

Of course, Shawn couldn’t be more happy as he readily obliged and plastered a kiss on Kathleen’s succulent lips that have been calling out to him since morning.

"Yay!" Eleanor clapped excitedly and of course, a deeper blush and an angry look from Kathleen was what Shawn earned for his audaciously shameless act— according to Kathleen’s thinking.

Elvis just looked away but a slight crease could be spotted at the corner of his mouth.

As they drove back to Fairview villa, the car was filled with animated chatter about the birthday and from time to time, Eleanor’s gaily laughter would burst out as an interesting moment at the orphanage or amusement park was recounted.
