THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 258: I Won’t Rise Until You Forgive Me
’What other doctor is more qualified to replace you than me,’ Kathleen thought then smiled again at the young doctor.
"What’s your name?"
"Huh?" The doctor was dumbfounded.
Have I offended her already by refusing her request?
How am I going to get out of this? I’m sure the chief would not even listen to me because he had warned me earlier.
He remembered vividly how he had warned him to listen to whatever she says and follow her orders.
’But did that also mean going against the chief’s orders?’
’What have I done to myself?’
’Have I put myself in trouble unknowingly?’
"Plop!"
The young doctor fell on his knees, and clasped his hands together in a pleading gesture.
"Please, Madam. Forgive me," he begged, his expression filled with remorse. "I didn’t mean to offend you. Please."
Kathleen’s delicate brow arched in a frown.
"What are you talking about? Stand to your feet this very minute."
"I won’t rise until you forgive me. I can’t afford to lose this job," he pleaded. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
He had just finished his fellowship training as a cardiologist and this was his first employment.
It was already a blessing to be employed in a reputable hospital like Medstar Hospital where the salary was worth the years of sacrifice his family had made to get him where he was today.
"Why would you lose your job and what do you need forgiveness for?" Kathleen asked. She was sincerely lost as to what the doctor was talking about.
"For not doing as you said," the doctor answered, in a quavering voice.
Kathleen was torn between whether to laugh or cry.
What has entered into the young man that made him have such thoughts?
"What gave you the impression that I was angry with you?"
"Is that not why you asked for my name— to report me to the higher ups?"
Kathleen couldn’t help but chuckle. "You completely misunderstood me. I’m not that petty for your information."
"Really?" The young man asked in disbelief, not daring to believe that he wasn’t going to be punished.
"Yeah, I only asked for your name so I can know how to address you," Kathleen clarified.
She could literally hear the deep breath he let out after hearing her explanation.
"Thank you Madam. To say I was scared is an understatement, I thought I offended you by not going out as you requested."
"So can you now go and have a little rest, Doctor...?"
"Dr Grey, Grey Martin," supplied the young doctor. "As much as I would love to do that, the doctor to replace me is yet to come."
"You don’t need to worry about that. I can perfectly fill in for you," Kathleen assured but as expected the doctor was more confused.
"I am also a doctor myself and can perfectly take care of the patient," Kathleen explained to the befuddled young man who apparently showed no sign of believing her or taking her words seriously.
"You can confirm with Dr Sullivan, the chief surgeon of this hospital, if it’s too hard for you to believe me."
As if on cue, the door opened noiselessly and Dr Sullivan strolled in, accompanied by three other doctors.
"Good morning Doc," Dr Sullivan greeted with an approving smile when he saw that Kathleen looked way better than she was yesterday.
He never knew how deep his goddess’s love for President Hudson was until yesterday. After all, she had always insisted that there was nothing between them.
It was only President Hudson that had opened up about his deep rooted love for her, but he only got to see her true feelings yesterday when President Hudson’s life was at risk.
"Morning Doc," Kathleen answered.
"How is President Hudson?" Dr Sullivan asked with an intriguing smile.
"He is recovering well from the signs I saw," Kathleen responded casually.
"That’s good to know," he said and moved towards the various monitoring devices attached to different parts of Shawn’s body.
He nodded with satisfaction after seeing the indications and had a little discussion with the other two doctors that came in with him.
"Goddess, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about."
"Yeah," Kathleen nodded.
As they continued in their discussion, Dr Martin who was watching their interactions with interest no longer doubted Kathleen’s words.
If it were ordinary family members, they would be full of questions and apparent concerns about the patient’s condition. But the lady here had not even troubled him since she came out to meet him, neither did she throw any question at the chief surgeon.
Besides, the medical terms the Chief surgeon used were not something lay men would understand if you were not in the medical line.
As a matter of fact, she seemed to be on the same level as the chief, if not higher from the way she spoke and the way the chief related with her.
All through the period he stayed in the ward, she didn’t ask him for any briefing. It was as if he was just the night guard that kept watch throughout the night and not a certified cardiologist.
It was only when the chief surgeon was about to leave that he asked if he had noticed anything unusual in the night, to which he merely shook his head in response.
"Doc, can he be relieved for a while? He’s been here all through the night," Kathleen requested.
"Of course, goddess. With you here, I’m sure President Hudson is in good hands," he agreed without much ado.
"Dr Martin, you can take a break. She will handle the rest."
"Thanks Chief. Thanks Madam," Dr Martins bowed before leaving the room. As he headed out, his mind was filled with questions he did not know how to find answers to.
At the corridor, he bumped into another doctor who was coming from another ward.
"Dr Martin, what are you seriously thinking about that you didn’t pay attention to where you are going?"
"I’m sorry, Dr Steffan, I wasn’t paying attention."
"I can see that," Steffan smiled in understanding.
