THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 259: Better Than An A-Grade Actress
"Are you having any challenges?" Steffan asked the new doctor who has not been more than two months in the hospital.
As an older doctor, he knew how hard it could be for a new doctor to adapt to a new environment, especially in a place where the standard was high like Medstar hospital.
They went for nothing but the best when hiring doctors and other staff, which explained the reason for their high bills and the remuneration given to their doctors was something to look forward to every month, compared to other hospitals.
Dr Martin hesitated for only a brief moment before making up his mind.
He looked around the corridor which was bustling with different activities. From time to time, a few nurses will hurry by carrying some trays and other necessities for patients.
Some doctors would throw them a greeting as they passed by which they have to respond to.
"Can we talk somewhere else?"
"It happens that I am still on my leave and not too busy as we speak so I can spare you some time. I only came around to see to a few cases before dashing back."
"I must say, I’m lucky to have met you then."
"Let’s talk at the canteen. You look tired. I guess you were on night shift," Steffan rightly speculated.
"Thanks Doc, I was."
They took a lift to the canteen on the third floor which was specifically for only the hospital staff.
It was still early in the morning, so the canteen wasn’t full. Only a few nurses and doctors were there, probably those who had night shifts like Dr Martin.
"Thanks, Doc," Dr Martin said as he drank the tea Steffan had ordered for him.
"So what are you bothered about?" Steffan asked after Dr Martin had washed down the last sandwich that was served with the tea.
"Last night, a very special patient was rushed into the hospital for rescue. It seemed he was involved in a gun battle and was shot in two places. One of the bullets narrowly escaped his heart."
"That’s serious," Steffan said. I guess it must have been tough dealing with such a sensitive situation. Hope there were no complications?"
"There was. But it was soon handled by our competent chief."
"So the patient was successfully rescued."
"Yes. But what I’ve been thinking about since last night and all through this morning before I bumped into you was the people involved."
"What about them?" Steffan asked as he sipped leisurely on the cup of coffee he had ordered for himself.
"Both the man that was shot and the lady that was by his side seemed to have strange identities."
"What do you mean?"
This was Medstar and dignitaries all over and beyond Baltimore would come here for medical services and he was sure that this wasn’t the first time Dr Martin was seeing them. So what was so special about this particular patient?
"Can you believe that for once, a relative was given the room in the emergency room barely an hour after such a complicated surgery was done?"
At this point, Steffan’s interest was piqued and he placed his cup of coffe on the table.
"When the lady woke up this morning, she entered the emergency room, and went straight to the different monitors without throwing me those questions that relatives usually ask about their family member who was in that condition."
"It was later she told me she was also a doctor which I hardly believed judging from her appearance."
"Why would you think she was not telling the truth just because of her appearance?" 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
"You need to have seen this person, Doc. She looked better than an A Grade actress, a supermodel or something. Nothing close to what a doctor should look like. She was way beyond gorgeous even without any makeup or facial embellishments, her appearance was ethereal."
From the way Doctor Martin described the person, Steffan saw an all too familiar image forming in his mind’s eyes.
He shook his head to clear his mind.
"What baffled me the most was Chief’s attitude towards her when he came around this morning," he heard Dr Martin say.
"He had this great respect and reverence, almost bothering on worship when he interacted with her. It was like he was relating with someone far superior to him."
"Even the routine of checking with the doctor on duty were skipped by him until the lady asked me to go get some rest."
"Really?" Steffan was also surprised by Dr Sullivan’s behavior.
’Who could be deserving of so much respect from Dr Sullivan? Other than...’
"Do you have any idea of who the patient is? Steffan asked with such urgency that Dr Martin was taken aback.
"I heard the chief mention one President..., Hu... wait. Yes, I get it now. President Hudson, this morning.
’Shawn?!’
’What could have happened to get him involved in a gun battle?’
’If it is truly Shawn, doesn’t that make the woman by his side Kathleen from Dr Martin’s description?’
But Kathleen was not a doctor. She was...
"Damn!" cursed Steffan when he realized he knew nothing about her, other than the wicked fact that she was Shawn’s wife and the woman he fell helplessly and hopelessly in love with.
"Doc, is everything Ok?" Dr Martin asked with a confused expression at Steffan’s strange behavior.
He had been quiet for over a minute and a curse was the first thing that came out of his mouth when he eventually said something.
Other occupants in the canteen turned towards their direction when they heard the loud curse.
’What has gotten into Dr Steffan. It was very much unlike him. Or maybe he knew something,’ Dr Martin thought.
"Did you say the patient is still unconscious? And that the chief was there with him and the woman when you left there?"
"Mm-hmm," Dr Martin affirmed, further confirming that Dr Steffan must have the answers to his questions.
"Can you please excuse me? Steffan said and didn’t even wait to get a response as he directly stood to his feet and headed out of the canteen after dropping a few dollar bill on the table, leaving Dr Martin’s mouth hanging in a stunned silence.
