THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 255: You Need To Be Strong
Jason did his best to hide the tremor from his own voice as he comforted. "He will be fine," however, Kathleen’s tears continued to flow ceaselessly.
Getting shot in the chest was no small feat.
Although he always bickered with President Hudson, he knew without a doubt that he loved his sister sincerely. He had proven it with his actions— by single-handedly rescuing her, not to mention putting his own life on the line to save her.
What else could be more convincing than that?
He silently prayed that nothing would happen to him. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
It was a long while before he felt his sister finally stopped shaking and relaxed in his arms.
He glanced at her and saw her staring at the theater door unblinkingly. It was like her soul was trapped in that room that has brought either joy or sorrow to countless loved ones.
After waiting for over an hour and the light still did not go out, Kathleen became impatient.
"It was supposed to last for an hour, two at most. What is going on? Why are they still in there?"
She glared at the door and resumed her pacing.
"And nobody deems it fit to come out and tell me what is going on." This is so nerve wrecking. It was even worse than the time she had to wait at the warehouse where she was kidnapped.
It failed to cross her mind that this was how countless family members waited while she operated on their loved ones in the past.
It took Jason’s persuasion to stop her from barging into the theater to take over the operation.
"Sis, you are a doctor yourself and I don’t doubt your speculation. But you need to calm down. I’m sure they are doing their best for him." Jason comforted and guided her to sit down again.
She reluctantly took her seat and not long after, Johnson came back with two cups of coffee and a paper bag.
He handed one to Jason and stretched the second one to Kathleen. "Please Madam, take this. You’ve not had anything since you came and I doubt they gave you anything in the warehouse."
"Thanks Johnson, but I’m OK. I don’t have the appetite for anything," Kathleen politely rejected it and returned her focus to the door.
"That won’t fly with me. At this point, you have to take something," Jason insisted.
When he had asked her how long the surgery might take, she had told him about an hour or more. So he had suggested she go change her clothes which was in a sorry state, then take something before coming back to wait but she had blatantly refused.
Until this moment, she still refused to take something.
"You need to be strong, at least for the children. Do you want them to scold me for not taking proper care of their mother?" Jason tried to liven the atmosphere.
It was at that moment Kathleen realized that the children would have been expecting her at home. They might even refuse to go to bed while waiting for her return.
Even if they had tried to get in touch with her, they wouldn’t be able to get her as her phone had been taken from her before she regained consciousness. She knew they might have gotten worried by now.
"Jason,"
"Mm-hmm," answered Jason who had his eyes trained on her all this while.
"Call Mrs Carr, I want to speak with the children. They must be worried sick about me by now."
Jason narrowed his eyes. "Are you sure you can handle them in your current state?"
"Mmmm," Kathleen nodded.
"Alright then," Jason said and proceeded to call the land line at home.
’In a way, it will distract her mind from focusing on what is happening in the theater,’ he hoped.
"Hello, this is the Wyatt’s residence. May I know who is on the line?" Mrs Carr’s tired voice came through as soon as the line got connected.
"It’s me, Jason."
"Master Jason, is everything alright? We have been trying to reach you but your number has not been going all through the evening."
The relief from Mrs Carr’s voice could be felt even from the long distance that separated them.
"I’m fine. What about the children?"
"They fell asleep on the couch waiting for their mother and I just took them to rest in their room not quite long ago."
"That’s alright."
"Hold on Master Jason," Mrs Carr quickly said when she sensed that Jason was about hanging up.
"Hello. Hello," her anxious voice echoed through the earpiece as she tried to confirm if Jason was still on the call.
"Go on, I’m listening," Jason said.
"Em, it’s about Madam, she was to return today but we haven’t seen her till now. Did she get in touch with you?"
Jason cast a glance at his sister who was torn between listening to the conversation and focusing on the theater. "She is fine. Do you have anything to say to her?" he asked.
"It’s just that we were worried since we didn’t hear from her."
"Mrs Carr,"
"Madam, is that you?" Mrs Carr couldn’t conceal her surprise when she heard Kathleen’s voice.
"Yes, it’s me. How are you and the kids?" Kathleen asked and tried as much as she could to sound normal.
"They are fine. They just went to bed." Mrs Carr hesitated for a while then asked. "Madam, your voice... is everything ok?"
"Yes, I’m fine. Please tell the children that I will see them tomorrow,"
"Tomorrow? You are not yet back? But I just spoke with Master Jason. Did he fly over to meet you there?"
From the tone of her voice, Kathleen could literally see Mrs Carr’s brows being raised in confusion.
"I am back, but..."
"We are busy with something, and will come home when we are done. Please take care of the children," Jason interrupted and ended the call before Mrs Carr could come up with more questions.
