THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 104: I Don’t Have A Private Life
"That’s my smart daughter. I’m curious about the arrest. Did you call the cops before you came to the cafe?" Director Wyatt asked as he relaxed his back on the chair, his right hand draped over the the back of the chair while the other held his cup of coffee.
"I didn’t. Moreover I had no idea I was going to run into that despicable woman and her daughter when I was coming."
Kathleen clenched her jaw at the thought of the ridiculous woman and her daughter.
"It was after the stunt she pulled that I just sent a message to the commissioner of police when the manager went to get the footage, informing him that the fish was already in the net and all he had to do was send his boys over."
"Initially I wanted her to enjoy a few more days of freedom but the stunt she pulled made me understand I’ve been too lenient with her."
Director Wyatt had a proud look on his face as he gazed at his daughter.
"You did the right thing dear, and the timing was also perfect," Director Wyatt commended.
Kathleen couldn’t agree more with him. "What’s the use of a secret arrest when things can actually be done with flair and glamour."
She flung her arms to the right and to the left in demonstration as she said the words: "flair and glamour"
"I know the news will not take long to spread given the number of people that witnessed the arrest," added Director Wyatt.
"That is to tell them that they are not the only ones that can be dramatic," scoffed Kathleen.
"After knowing that Spider has started cooperating with you, I was also planning to take action if you didn’t act fast. Framing you again was the straw that finally broke the camel’s back."
Hearing her father’s words, Kathleen didn’t know whether it was a blessing or a curse to have a father who seemed to be omnipresent.
"You never cease to amaze me, dad. Sometimes I think I don’t even have a private life," Kathleen couldn’t help but complain.
"That’s not true, sweetheart. I only meddle when I smell something fishy," Director Wyatt quickly comforted her.
"As for the rest of what you do, I know where to draw the line. So you don’t need to be restrained at all."
"Talking about crossing the line, what were you discussing with President Hudson today?" Kathleen remembered the reason she had agreed to meet him.
Director Wyatt had a deadpan expression as he threw in a curt reply. "Business."
"What else could I have discussed with him?"
He suddenly became focused on admiring the flower latte artwork on the wall.
"Don’t think I don’t know that you are not telling me the whole truth," Kathleen pointed out, a playful smirk dancing around her lips.
"What do you mean I am not telling you the whole truth?" Director Wyatt said looking at everything except his inquisitive daughter.
"How come you are finding it hard to maintain eye contact. You always evade my eyes when you are not being sincere," Kathleen exposed without further ado.
"That’s not true," Director Wyatt denied.
"What is true then?" Kathleen held her chin in her hands, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she waited to hear what excuse her father would come up with.
"Your eyes remind me so much of your mother and I suddenly realize if I continue to look at you I will miss her so much that I’ll have to rush back home," Director Wyatt explained with a serious look.
Kathleen doubled over with laughter, holding her sides at the hilarity of her fathers lame excuse.
Her laughter was so infectious that her faher couldn’t help but join in.
"How can that be considered as an explanation?" Kathleen said in between fits of laughter.
"Tell me, what did you discuss with Shawn?" She demanded, after recovering a bit from the laughter.
"So now it’s Shawn and no longer President Hudson?" teased Director Wyatt.
Kathleen stifled a smile as she said, "Don’t change the topic, dad."
Director Wyatt raised his hands in mock surrender. He wasn’t planning to keep it away from her from the beginning.
"Alright you win. It is so troublesome having to lie to a loved one anyway."
"Of course it’s much easier when you tell the truth," agreed Kathleen.
"To cover up one lie you have to work hard to think of so many lies and in the end, the truth will still be revealed."
After not hearing her father’s voice, Kathleen prompted, "Dad, I’m still waiting for your explanation."
"Would you believe me if I said I only wanted to test him," Director Wyatt asked.
"Why would you want to test him? I hope you are not entertaining any funny ideas, because I’m not ready to forgive him."
"Are you sure? What about how you feel for him?"
He sighed, took Kathleen’s hand in his and advised,
"You see, I’m your father and I know you still love him. Why continue torturing yourself for what is within your power to change."
"But dad, I can’t live with a man who doesn’t trust me," Kathleen said and bowed her head. The past was not what she wished to recall but it kept on haunting her.
"You wanted to know what we talked about, right?"
"Mmm-hmm," came Kathleen’s solemn reply.
Director Wyatt took his time before saying.
"I asked Shawn what his thoughts were concerning my daughter?"
"And what was his answer?"
Kathleen tried not to sound too impatient, but the person she was dealing with happened to be Director Robin Wyatt. He easily saw through her disguise, but pretended not to notice.
"Apart from business he has no other interest in my daughter. Those were his exact words. And I’m sure he doesn’t know yet that you are my daughter."
Kathleen didn’t know why she was happy with this answer, seeing she had nothing to do with him, apart from treating his grandmother.
