Chapter 94: Knowledge Borne from Darkness

Moon slowly regressed, his fur curling back and his large frame reducing till Zeke’s eyes stared back into hers.

His eyes trembled with relief, but it was short-lived as the adrenaline that flooded his veins a second ago was quickly extinguished. The effect of Sylas’s blood in him calmed in an instant, and Zeke felt the heaviness and pain once again.

As no matter how hard he tried to keep his eyes open, he just couldn’t. He felt himself crash as the strains took over, but he collapsed right next to her.

Sylas stared between them. Theo had opened her eyes for a second and had closed them back. Whatever she had done, however she had fought against the devil, must have drained every energy she had in her.

Rest. They both needed rest.

And just in time.

He watched her as her body slowly reverted back to her female form, and he wondered why she didn’t change back from the moment she had died, or when the demon had emerged.

He could only conclude on one thing.

Her wolf. Somehow, her wolf had held on ~ a teether to life, clinging to the last amber of light she could. That was one stubborn, persistent wolf that still fought for herself and Theo even when everything else had given up.

Sylas stayed on his knees for a while, a terrible ache clogging his head. His limbs felt weak too. He had exerted himself too hard, but he couldn’t afford to collapse, either.

Not when the forest was still alive.

He looked up at the Veil above them. He could hear something breathing raggedly from inside, its fury making the Veil quiver. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

But it remained trapped in there. Then, he looked down at the small tear, where the mist leaked through.

A tear that Theo had caused that night. The pendant is supposed to be the only thing that can open that veil, but what if they were wrong about that?

Sylas lowered his head. There was so much to worry about, but for now, he needed to settle.

The school was awake that night.

Two statements flowed around all the dorms.

’Bodies were found along the Ravenspire Path’

’One of those bodies belongs to Thaddeus Douglas’

No one knew how the dorms had acquired that information, but every single room was buzzing restlessly with the news.

In the Eastern dorm, a group of First-years had gathered in one room and huddled near their windows, straining to see shadows flicker in the night. They exchange terrified glances, listening to the distant roar of a wolf or the crack of something splitting in the dark.

For the second years, the tension is different, the students understood more of what had happened. Their faces were pale and their voices hushed. Some even pace silently, unable to sit still.

One of those people was Aurelius.

The words, ’Thaddeus Douglas’ is dead kept echoing in his head, and he was in a daze for a short while.

No, they must be wrong. There’s no way.

But if he had really stepped into the Hallow...

Aurelius shot up from his bed.

No. He would sneak to the Eastern dorm and check on Redhead himself. He would not let these rumours play with his head.

The moment he opened the door, Celeste stood there with his arms crossed.

"You’re so predictable," Celeste said lazily.

"Move, Celeste,"

"Let me guess. You’re going to check on your... acquaintance,"

"Celeste!"

"There’s no need to do that," Celeste said to him, "It’s true. He stepped into the Hallow and died. I just sneaked out too and I saw Draegor hurling out commands to the guard. They mentioned something about an explosion and finding Thad’s body,"

Aurelius’s face grew pale, "No...," He heard the explosion that came from the Ravenspire Path a while ago.

"I know you like the guy, but you’re way too attached to someone you barely know anything about,"

Aurelius shook his head, trying to push down the panic clawing at his chest. "No," he muttered, his voice tight. "He didn’t... he couldn’t..."

Celeste leaned casually against the doorframe, his eyes narrowing, "Thaddeus Douglas isn’t a child, Aurelius. He knew what stepping into the Hallow meant,"

Aurelius clenched his fists, struggling to find words that wouldn’t betray the storm inside him. "But... he’s not just anyone. He... I need to know he’s—"

"Safe? Alive? Don’t hold your breath," Celeste’s voice was sharp, yet laced with something almost like regret. He flicked his gaze toward the corridor, checking if anyone was listening, then back to Aurelius, "What happened in the Hallow... that’s beyond any of us. And even if he somehow came back and didn’t die... he wouldn’t be the same,"

Aurelius swallowed, the weight of Celeste’s words pressing down on him. He had seen enough of the world to know he wasn’t one to lie for sympathy or shock. And yet... "And Redhead?" His voice was softer now, almost pleading.

Celeste’s lips twitched into a half-smile, "Who knows? The rumours may not be completely true. Draegor has tripled the guard again. I wouldn’t recommend going back out there right now,"

Aurelius’s chest tightened, a silent fury rising within him, "So we just... wait? Let whatever happened out there dictate the rest of the night?"

"Wait, yes. But watch. Learn," Celeste’s tone hardened, "You’re from the Argent Tribunal. Your instincts are sharp. Don’t waste them on foolish bravery. There’s more happening than bodies and explosions, and Forbidden Forests,"

Aurelius froze at that, a flicker of understanding sparking in his eyes, "More?"

Celeste didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he uncrossed his arms and sighed, "There’s a reason I left Cain’s shadow behind," He murmured. "And a reason I stay here. Keep your focus, Aurelius. You’ll need it,"

Something in his voice unsettled Aurelius. Celeste knew more than he let on. About Thaddeus. About the Hallow. About the chaos waiting outside the dorms. And most of all, he knew secrets he wasn’t sharing.

Aurelius’s eyes flicked to Celeste’s. There was a weight behind them, a shadow of experience he couldn’t name. He had learned quickly, in all the years he had grown up with him, that Celeste’s calm was not indifference, but observation, calculation, a warning dressed as leisure.

"Then we watch," Aurelius said finally, forcing control into his voice even though it still quivered, "Quietly. No rash moves,"

Celeste smiled, his purple eyes softening, "Good. You’ve got the patience for it, for once,"

Aurelius paused, glancing at him more closely than usual. Despite his teasing... his stance, alertness, the faintest tension in her shoulders all whispered of a life lived under constant threat. Of knowledge borne from darkness.

Something clicked in Aurelius’s chest. They both understood the weight of the world in ways their peers couldn’t begin to imagine. And while he didn’t know all the pieces yet, he knew one thing: tonight, something had changed, and the secrets they kept might be the only thing keeping them alive.

Celeste pushed off the door, and spoke almost conspiratorially, "And remember... not everything you see, or think you know, is what it seems. Especially with the people who claim to matter most,"
