Chapter 179: The Cure that Failed

Jarred slammed backwards under Zeke’s weight, but he did not fall.

Instead, he twisted with terrifying strength, and one massive arm locked around Zeke’s throat as they hit the ground. Zeke snarled and tore at him, his claws carving deep trenches into Jarred’s chest, but the larger wolf barely reacted.

Jarred’s jaws snapped shut inches from Zeke’s neck, and Theo felt something cold slide through her chest, already moving without thought.

She grabbed a jagged piece of broken rock and drove it into Jarred’s side with everything she had. It sank deep with a wet, horrible noise, and Jarred roared.

He backhanded her almost immediately, but this time she blocked with both hands before it slammed into her chest like before. Still, the impact sent her flying back, and she crashed into Zeke behind her, both of them rolling on the floor.

This was the first time in her life she was losing a fight, that she was actually shaking with fear while fighting an enemy with the stark realisation that there were truly wolves out there, much stronger.

Much faster.

Despite the harsh pain, she was already pushing herself up, blood running down her arm and soaking into the floor.

She spat out some blood in her mouth, then smirked, "I’m actually entertained,"

Jarrek rose, his wolf form towering over them now like a hulking nightmare of scarred muscle and dark fur. His one good eye burned like molten gold, fixed on them with absolute intent.

He smirked back, not saying anything.

Then, he vanished.

Theo barely registered the movement before Zeke was ripped away from her. Jarred slammed him headfirst into the cave ceiling, then drove him down again, over and over, like he was trying to beat the Alpha into the stone itself.

Theo screamed his name and charged.

Seraphina surged, and she drove her claws straight into his bad eye.

Jarred howled, rearing back as blood poured down his face.

And Zeke was on his feet again before she could blink. The red wolf slammed into Jarred with a sound like thunder was breaking, and his jaws locked down on Jarred’s injured shoulder and did not let go. Then, he tore the flesh and bone.

Jarred roared and slammed Zeke into the wall, over and over, but Zeke was a relentless beast.

Theo joined him quickly and went for Jarred’s legs, her claws ripping tendons, while her teeth sank into his muscle. She attacked like she meant to kill him.

Because she did.

The moment he first injured Zeke’s shoulders and showed every indication that he actually meant to kill Zeke, she felt the need to rip off his head.

Jarred staggered, and Zeke drove Jarred down and they both pinned him.

Zeke’s jaws closed around Jarred’s throat, and she locked onto his spine, making sure her claws were buried deep enough to anchor him in place.

Jarred thrashed against them, his strength still monstrous, but it was slowing.

Then, Theo slammed her knee to the middle of his head so hard she felt the impact travel down to his toes. Before she could even grunt, she had sent another one, harder than the last one, cracking deep into his skull.

And finally, he stopped moving.

But, he wasn’t dead. They had only knocked him out, finally!

But Zeke wasn’t done. Jarred needed to die. Zeke looked angry, his face covered in his blood as he moved to deliver the finishing blow.

Then, the howls came from the cave’s exit.

Dozens of them.

Theo and Zeke only had the chance to look up and caught sight of the heinous wolves running into the cave, headed straight for them as the ground thundered with paws.

On cue, Theo and Zeke turned around and ran.

They were headed back to the way they came through, sprinting up the flight of spiral cases that led all the way to the top of the mountain.

Zeke moved like he was the wind, carrying her on his back. In mere seconds, they were bursting out of the wooden door with the wolves left far behind.

Theo climbed down his back just as Zeke transformed back to his human self. He looked even worse than he was in wolf form, his skin ripped open from the brutal fight they just had with Jarrek.

She was in a better condition than him.

Around them laid bodies of dead wolves. A mix of Gravemont’s students and the attacking wolves, with the stench of blood so strong in the air Theo wished she could rip off her nose and keep it aside for now.

Seems like the wolves fighting here had finished killing and had climbed down the cliff to come for them.

Or rather, Jarrek might have called them when he had found them earlier.

They quickly fled the vicinity of the archer’s range and hung around, crunched down in a small corner, concealing their aura and remaining silent. With his unfortunate development, escaping from Gravemont wouldn’t be so easy anymore.

Next to her, Zeke’s breath was slowly getting shallower and more rapid.

"Are you okay?" Theo asked as she turned to him.

He stumbled forward, and she wrapped her arms around him. His temperature had begun to spike again, and his skin was turning pale.

This time, it wasn’t because of the Moon.

Theo’s eyes widened. It was almost midnight.

Fear gripped her heart. Oh no.

"We mated," She said, still holding him, "That should have cured you,"

"It should," He replied.

*Sera, what’s going on?!* Theo demanded worriedly, *Why is this still happening? Isn’t he supposed to be healed?!*

*Obviously it didn’t work,* Seraphina replied, *Normally mating can heal anything wolf-related, which I gave you as your first option while I told you what you could do to heal him, and when you sit and think about Zeke’s condition...it’s not directly wolf-related, it’s demon-related. He’s rejecting the changes happening in him*

*What the hell do I do now?!* She cried.

*Remember the second option I gave you the other day?*

Theo’s arms tightened around him. Of course she did!

If that would cure him, then there was no other choice. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

But first, they can’t stay in his dark corner any longer. She needed somewhere quiet and safe to do what she had to do.

"Come on Zeke," She said as she turned her back to him, still squatting, "Climb," She stated.
