Chapter 164: Five Minutes?

Theo did not answer Ava.

She kept walking.

Each step of hers was sharp and focused, her eyes fixed on the target.

The chatter in the Boneyard faded into a tense hush again as eyes followed her path. She looked like a woman on a mission, reeking of possession and... jealousy.

Heather noticed her coming first, and her smile twitched, then widened deliberately.

Zeke felt Theo before he saw her. The heat of her anger pressed against his spine, familiar, dangerous and intoxicating all at once.

Theo stopped right in front of them.

"Zeke," she said, her voice tight but controlled, "I need to talk to you. Outside,"

Heather blinked, then laughed softly while her fingers tightened on her soda, "Can it wait?" She asked sweetly, "We’re kind of in the middle of something,"

Zeke leaned back in his chair, and his eyes slid lazily up to Theo’s face. Her Jealous face was insanely attractive, and his gaze fell to her lips. If he let loose for even a second, he would grab and kiss her right now, in front of everyone.

But on the outside, he looked unbothered, relaxed, and annoyingly handsome.

"Is it important?" He asked.

Theo stared at him. Really stared. Like she was trying to peel him apart layer by layer and find the man she trusted underneath the act.

"Yes," She said. "It is,"

Heather shifted closer to him, her shoulder brushing his arm on purpose, "If it’s about the play or props or something," She said, waving a hand, "You can tell Jocelyn. Zeke and I are talking,"

Theo’s eyes snapped at Heather with a deadline glare, "I wasn’t talking to you," 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Heather’s smile sharpened, "You are now," She seemed to have gotten braver with Zeke right next to her.

Zeke hummed quietly, trying to keep his face from twitching with laughter, "Easy," He whispered softly at Heather with a small wink, "No need to get claws out."

Theo’s eyes snapped back to him, "I said I need to talk to you. Alone,"

He tilted his head, studying her like a puzzle. For a second, just a second, she saw something flicker in his eyes. Then it was gone.

"Not right now," he said calmly, "I’m busy,"

That hurt on so many levels.

Murmurs rippled through the room like an increasing wave.

Ava half rose from her seat, clearly panicking. Gina leaned forward, eyes gleaming with excitement.

Heather smiled like she had already won. "See?" She said softly. "He’s busy,"

Theo let out a slow breath through her nose, "Zeke," she said again, quieter now, but there was something dangerous beneath it, "I’m not asking,"

Heather’s fingers curled into his sleeve, "You don’t have to go," she murmured to his ears, "You don’t owe anyone explanations,"

Zeke looked down at Heather, then back at Theo, "I told you," he said evenly, "Not now,"

Theo laughed out, but nothing about the laughter sounded like she was amused, "Wow," she said, "So this is how you want to play it," She turned slightly, as if to leave, then stopped and looked back at him over her shoulder, "Fine, Zeke. Stay!"

Heather’s grin widened, and she leaned even closer to Zeke till her head was resting on his shoulders for comfort.

Theo took two steps away. Seraphina was yelling a horde of curses and growls, scratching at her chest mercilessly.

"Five minutes,"

The word cracked through the room, and Theo stopped.

Heather stiffened and looked up at him.

Zeke slowly slipped Heather’s arm away from his, and whispered, "Give me a moment,"

Her eyes widened, "What?"

"I’ll be right back," he added smoothly, brushing her fingers off his sleeve, "Relax."

His words made her melt, and a stupid smile formed on her face as he stood up.

Theo turned fully now, watching him approach. His expression was neutral, but she knew him too well. There was tension coiled under his skin, a storm barely leashed.

He stopped in front of her, and they both walked out of the Boneyard.

They walked past the tables together, the space between them charged and volatile. Ava exhaled shakily as they both walked past her. Gina whispered something sharp into Heather’s ear, but Heather was no longer smiling as she watched them too.

They left the whole building entirely, only stopping when they were very sure no one could hear or see them from here.

Theo’s rage unleashed instantly, "What the hell was that?"

Zeke crossed his arms, looking too relaxed, which made her even angrier, "What did it look like?"

"It looked like you were enjoying yourself,"

He arched a brow, "And?"

"And you said you would protect me," she snapped. "This doesn’t feel like protection. This feels like you siding with her,"

"Why the hell are you so mad at me, huh?" He asked flatly, "You did what you wanted to do by hiding things from me, so now I’m doing what I want to do. Whichever way I choose to protect you, why are you yelling?"

"Oh, so what? You planning on actually being her boyfriend?"

"That doesn’t concern you!"

"It does! I’m your mate! You aren’t allowed to flirt with anyone else!" She fired back furiously.

"And you weren’t allowed to keep things from me but you did! You think I’m irrational and I don’t think before I act. And you know what? I don’t care what you think anymore!"

She wanted to apologise, tell him she was wrong, but she said instead, "You let her touch you,"

His mouth twitched, "Jealous?"

"Yes," she shot back immediately. "Furiously,"

That earned a brief smile, gone as fast as it came, "Good. I felt tenfold of that when you didn’t tell me what you were going through!"

She let out a shaky breath, her eyes dripping to the floor, "I know you’ve been holding back on me," She admitted again, "Whenever you look at me, you see something that Sylas has touched and that...pushes you away just a little," She mustered up the strength and looked back into his eyes, "Because the Zeke I know, would have covered the distance between us by now, and made my soul shudder with the need for you. You would have mated with me by now, to cure yourself, like you were told,"

Zeke didn’t take his eyes off her, "You are right," He confessed too, "I’m unsure how to look at you anymore, without seeing Sylas in the picture. It drives me insane, Hellcat," He suddenly grabbed her neck, his fingers coiling around it firmly, "But I would never choose her over you," He said finally, "Not in a thousand lifetimes. But you have to trust me enough to let me play ugly when I need to,"

Theo looked away, her chest tight, "You’re enjoying it,"

"I’m good at it," he corrected, "There’s a difference."

She shook her head, "You scared me."

His jaw clenched, and he sighed, "I scared myself,"

They stood there, neither reaching for the other, tension humming between them like a live wire.

Then, without another word, he turned around and started to leave. She watched his broad back retreat, each step measured and a little too controlled, like he was holding himself together by sheer will.

When he was far enough that it felt final, her shoulders sagged, and her gaze dropped to the dirt.

She swallowed hard.

Suddenly, the air changed again and she felt that familiar pressure, that dangerous gravity snapping back into place in a breath as his scent slammed into her lungs.

She barely had time to look up before a hand roughly cupped her jaw. Her head snapped up...

...and Zeke’s mouth crashed into hers.
