Thaddeus didn’t speak at first.
He just stared with wide eyes, breathing like someone who’d just been dragged out of deep water. Every detail Sylas revealed hit him like a physical blow.
His mouth opened, then closed, then opened again. He had no words.
When he finally managed a sound, it was barely a whisper, and his voice cracked, "H...How do you know all that?"
But it wasn’t truly a question. It was disbelief wrapped in fear, and something dangerously close to hope.
Hope? Why did he feel hopeful toward someone he had just met?
Theo watched as Thad’s shoulders slowly slumped. He looked very exhausted, genuinely tired of everything at this point.
His hand hovered unconsciously over the pocket where he kept Ava’s bracelet, like he was checking whether the world still made sense.
Sylas didn’t push any further, he just let Thad breathe and take everything in at his own pace. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
And more than threats or danger, the silence dug into him even more. He didn’t know Sylas, but Theo had spoken about him in ways that made him silent, dangerous, enigmatic... but trustworthy.
Then, Thad swallowed hard, "I want to at least know why Cain wants me. What does he need me for?"
"Leverage," Sylas replied in a low voice, "Leverage over Darius. Leverage over Theodora. Leverage over the North,"
Theo was now confused, "Why does he want leverage over my father? They’re friends,"
"Friends," Sylas echoed the word like he was just hearing it for the first time in his life, "That doesn’t exist between Alphas. In Fact, Darius never took Thad to that facility to experiment on him,"
"What?" Thaddeus stepped forward.
Sylas looked straight into his eyes, "He took you there to protect you. From Cain. He might have done it in his own twisted ways, but it’s still far better than you falling into Cain’s hands,"
Thaddeus physically recoiled, finding it hard to understand.
"So Cain wanted Thaddeus as leverage?!"
"To get to you," Sylas replied, turning back to her, "And to get into Darius’s head. Cain isn’t friends with anyone, and Darius knows this,"
Theo forced herself to ignore the lump in her throat, then she gently placed a hand on Thaddeus’s arm, and he finally looked at her.
"You should hide for now," She said, "It’s what’s best for you, Thad. I know it doesn’t feel right, but nothing actually does right now. You have a chance to stay low, so take it,"
He exhaled shakily, wiping his nose with the back of his hand.
Then he nodded.
"Okay,"
He turned to Sylas, "I’ll go. Just... don’t knock me out,"
For a split second, Sylas’s deadly cold expression softened into something close to approval, "Good," He glanced toward the trees, "You’re to leave immediately with Wolfe,"
Sylas gestured at the man behind him.
"You’ll journey to the west for three days. Wolfe will keep you safe till you get to your destination. You’re to stay put till it’s all over, for as long as you need to. Understand?"
Thaddeus nodded.
Then, Wolfe stepped forward.
"Wait," Thaddeus said and turned to Theo, his eyes anxious but soft. He must have a hundred thoughts mixed up in his head, "So, this is goodbye?"
"This is goodbye for now," She corrected, "I’ll be seeing you soon, just hold on,"
He smiled, "I should be saying that. You’re the one in more trouble than I am,"
"Maybe we should just switch. You go back and take your place at Gravemont and I go into hiding in an underground house that has everything I could possibly need," She teased.
Thaddeus quickly stepped back, "Hell nah. You must carry your cross,"
Theo burst into laughter, "You’re annoying. Get out of here,"
He laughed a bit too, then they stared at each other softly. The last time they saw each other was ten years ago - who knows when next they’ll meet again? She tried to hold back the tears, but she’s never been good at it.
"I’ll miss you, cous," Thaddeus whispered.
"Good-bye, Thad. We’ll meet again soon,"
He smiled, then he inhaled sharply and turned to Wolfe.
Theo stood beside Sylas as she watched Thaddeus and Wolfe start to leave. Thad turned back every few seconds and waved at her. She waved back, gently wiping the tear from her eyes.
Once they were out of sight, Theo’s eyes fell on the sky. It was already evening and the sun was about to set. She told Zeke she would be back before he went to sleep.
She still had a few more hours to herself... but Sylas was here now.
She felt weird. The last time they had seen each other she had rejected his advances and cried on his chest all afternoon. Now she stood next to him, trying to pretend their relationship was awkward and forbidden.
"You’re in your real form," He finally broke the ice.
Theo looked down at herself. She’s been like this since she saw Thad, "Thank you for helping him," She was trying to change the topic
"You don’t have to thank me," He said softly, and his next words totally caught her off guard, "I don’t want you to ever tell me that we can’t be together again,"
She froze.
"I need you to understand that your presence in my life is a gift,"
Something fluttered in her chest and she slowly looked up at him with trembling eyes.
He looked back at her, "I’ve never wanted anything more. I know I’m older—far older," he said, his voice low and steady, like he was confessing a sin he had no intention of repenting for, "but that changes nothing for me."
Theo’s heartbeat stuttered again.
Sylas took one step and faced her properly, "When I’m with you," he continued, "The chaos stops. The noise stops and the world stops trying to tear itself apart,"
His eyes stared into hers, open and unflinchingly honest, "You are the first thing in a very long time that doesn’t feel like a war,"
Theo’s breath hitched, and his voice deepened with a quiet tremor beneath the calm, "Do you know what that means for a man like me?"
Her throat tightened and she shook her head.
"It means I’m already ruined,"
Her lips parted.
"You’ve ruined me, Venom,"
Heat shot through every single part of her. It seeped into her bones, and she was struggling to stay on her feet.
Sylas exhaled slowly, then admitted, "I tried to stay away. I tried to respect your boundaries. I knew I wouldn’t succeed, but I tried. The moment you walked out of that school, " his voice dipped into something rawer, like it wasn’t raw enough already, "...I knew I would follow you anywhere. Even if you didn’t want me to,"
Her breath trembled.
"But you do want me," he said softly. "I saw it that day, the day I kissed you I felt it. And I don’t want to pretend that I didn’t,"
Theo’s chest tightened so fiercely it almost hurt.
Then, Sylas leaned in, his eyes looking like the bottomless ocean, "I don’t care about bad luck," he murmured, "I don’t care what the Universe thinks, and I don’t care who hunts you, or who hunts me,"
More emotions cracked through the glacier of his expression, just enough to break her, "I care about you," he whispered, "And I’m not walking away,"
The world felt too quiet. Too intimate.
Theo swallowed hard, "Sylas..."
"Don’t run from me again," He sounded like he was pleading, but in a way a man like him could plead.
Quiet, deadly, and absolute.
"Don’t tell me we can’t do this when we can," he said, "For once, let something good stay,"
