Theo’s breath caught as Professor Sylas stepped out from behind the bark of a tree.
But today, he did not look like the Professor Sylas she was used to.
Not the one who lectured in neatly pressed coats and glasses, haunting the halls of Gravemont with that quiet, calm menace.
This Sylas... looked like sin tailored into a man.
His glasses were gone, revealing those icy, blue eyes in their full, breathtaking intensity. His dark shirt was half unbuttoned, his sleeves rolled back to expose veins and forearms that looked like they had broken men before. The fabric clung to all the right places, and she held back a gasp.
His trousers were darkly tailored, and the holster at his shoulder wasn’t even trying to be subtle.
And his aura.
Gods, that aura was on a whole new level. He walked and oozed this dangerous calm that chilled her to the bones.
And he moved with a kind of deadly power that didn’t need to flex... because it had already won.
Theo stared like an idiot, and her heart executed a perfect somersault.
*Holy hell* Seraphina muttered inside her.
She didn’t even notice there was someone behind him till they were close enough. He was tall with a hard face, walking just one step behind Sylas. She could smell blood coming from both of them.
"Professor...," Theo whispered softly, finally finding her voice. What was he doing here?
"Professor?" Thaddeus whispered, unable to take his eyes off Sylas. He was rooted on his foot with awe, and intense fear. At the same time, there was this primal feeling of superiority coming from Sylas, "He’s the one you told me about?"
Sylas stopped in front of them.
"Yes," She replied.
Theo grabbed Sylas’s hand, attempting to drag him somewhere they could speak alone, but the second she touched him, the stone-faced guy behind him threw an arm forward and grabbed hers, staring at her with a perilous expression.
Sylas glanced back at him, and whatever kind of communication passed between them had the guy reluctantly letting go of her arm. Was he some kind of bodyguard?
"Give me a minute," She said to Thad and pulled Sylas along with her.
"What are you doing here?" She demanded once they were far enough, "Are you always following me around and listening to all my conversations?!"
His answer was short, "You left the Academy,"
"That doesn’t answer my question. I can take care of myself, you know that,"
"Can you?"
"What’s that supposed to mean?" She questioned back.
"You died, Theodora,"
Those three words were enough to undo her, and she may have never noticed how much her death had affected a lot of people, but right now she saw the vulnerability and the fear in his eyes. He was actually trembling inside, still staring at her like he couldn’t believe she was alive.
"I have no--"
He kept out a deep exhale and she could see him physically trying to compose himself again, trying to throw the fear to the back of his mind, "Why did you leave the academy?"
"I told you I was leaving,"
"I told you you were safer there,"
"And I told you that I can’t risk Cain finding out who you are because of me,"
"And I told you I can take care of myself and I will make sure it never gets to that,"
"And I told you that the Universe hates me and there’s a good chance I can spoil everything," She said, then thought back to the past few weeks, and what happened last night to Zeke, "But you don’t have to worry about me leaving anymore, I’ll return in the next two days,"
"Why the sudden change of heart?"
"There’s something I have to do..., Someone I have to look after,"
"You mean Zeke," He said.
Theo was once again baffled at how this man knew everything, "How did you know?"
"I know everything," He said simply.
He did.
"You mentioned that there was somewhere Thaddeus could stay?" She asked, glancing back at her cousin whom was now exchanging snarls with the stonefaced guy.
"Yes," Sylas replied, "It’s an Underground house in the west. No one knows it exists, he could stay there until it’s safe for him to come out, and it has everything he needs to survive for as long as he has to stay,"
She looked at Thad again, "I don’t know if he’ll agree to go. He doesn’t know who you are,"
"I’ll convince him," Sylas said and abruptly turned around, walking back to Thaddeus.
"What are you doing?" Theo said in a hushed whisper as she followed behind, "You’re going to scare him. He’s been through a lot,"
"Yeah?" Sylas glanced back at her, "Well Cain is after him. Cain knows he escaped from where Darius had him, and he wants his hands on Thad. We need to get him to safety,"
Cain wants Thaddeus? Why?
Before she could ask anything, Sylas’s long strides had won and he was standing in front of Thaddeus.
"Cain is after you," He announced openly.
"Oh my God," Theo murmured.
"We need to get you somewhere safe before he gets to you," Sylas continued.
Thaddeus took a step back defensively, "The last time I trusted a stranger, I was knocked out and I ended up in a facility for months!"
Sylas’s eyes sharpened and darkened at the same time, "I have no time to convince you. I might just knock you out myself,"
His convincing skills were not convincing at all! Theo quickly stepped between them, "You!" She pointed at Sylas, "You need to tone down the Mafia vibes," She turned to Thaddeus, "And yes, he’s actually trying to help you. I already told you about him... He’s helped me a lot at the academy,"
"He looks dangerous," Thaddeus said.
Theo turned back to Sylas and gave him another once over, "Yeah, but he’s a good..." She didn’t realize she was even sweeping him desirably with her eyes like she wanted to undress him, till she got to his face and saw the corners of his lips were curled a bit.
Quickly, she cleared her throat, "He’s a good person, I promise! And he wants to help you,"
"Why does he want to help me? He doesn’t know who I am,"
Sylas turned his head toward him slowly... almost too slowly. When he spoke, his voice was calm in a way that made the woods seem to hold their breath.
"I know enough,"
He took a step closer, and Thaddeus tensed.
"Thaddeus Douglas Draven. Your middle name is Hale. You were born during a waning crescent. Your first shift happened at age nine. You were alone in the woods behind your old house. You broke your arm that night and told everyone you fell from a tree,"
Thaddeus’s jaw dropped.
"You hate cooked onions. You read comic books at night when you can’t sleep. You pretend you’re not scared of thunderstorms, but you always clench your right fist when the first strike hits,"
Theo blinked.
What the hell? Sylas had mentioned meeting Thaddeus before - the day he had questioned who she really was after class. But he never met Thaddeus. He just... watched him.
Sylas wasn’t done.
"Your last full-moon cycle lasted three minutes longer than the one before it. You’ve been hiding that because you think it means something is wrong with you. Whenever you transform, you always land on your left side. A bad habit you need to curb. And your girlfriend..."
His icy eyes narrowed.
"Ava. Luna Academy. You were going to take her to the Spring Festival. You never got the chance. You always keep her bracelet in your pocket, the ride side,"
Thaddeus instinctively touched his pocket, and his fingers trembled.
Sylas’s tone dropped again, soft but merciless, "So yes. I know who you are, and I’m helping you because if Cain gets to you first... he will weaponise every single one of those things against you,"
Thaddeus swallowed hard.
Theo’s breath hitched. Sylas was really frightening. It’s almost like he’s been stalking Thaddeus all his life. Probably stalking everyone linked to Cain all their life. His intellect and intel brought chills to their core.
Sylas stepped back just slightly, his expression unreadable, "Now move. We’re wasting time,"
