Chapter 102: The Softest Break

Celeste shook his head, "I don’t know. That’s not what I’m saying... maybe. All I know is that the pendant responds to you, in ways that make it... unstable. And if the pendant falters, then everything it holds back could escape,"

Theo’s mind spun, "So... you keep the Veil from breaking, but I... I make it... react?"

Celeste didn’t answer immediately

"Something like that," he murmured, "I’ve never seen it behave the way it did last night. I don’t understand it completely... and I don’t know if anyone can. But you... you affect it,"

Theo’s pulse raced. She didn’t know she was, but somehow, she was already the epicentre of something monumental. And Celeste, this quiet, unassuming Alpha from the south... he was somehow tied to it too, though even he didn’t fully know how.

They were both trying to figure out something, and also trying to stop how Cain would use it against them.

Celeste stood up afterwards, "I’m leaving now. Do NOT drag me back!"

"I won’t," She said.

He started to walk away, then turned back and whispered, "Good luck on... leaving,"

Then he left.

He had left her with so much more to think about.

The Veil. The Lock. The Key. The Stabilizer. Cain.

Everything. Where was she supposed to start from? She wanted to understand more.

Just then, she heard the faint crush of leaves under the weight of boots and looked up sharply. She was alone in the woods only a second ago, and a part of her expected to see another man in a mask with a gun

Instead, Sylas stood there.

Theo stood up, her eyes fixed on his cold, tall frame, "Professor," She whispered.

He walked up to her, and placed the back of his hand on her forehead, measuring her temperature. He didn’t say anything.

"How long have you been there? Were you listening?" She inquired.

He didn’t reply, but she already knew he had listened to everything. Instead, he leaned over and kissed her, stealing her breath away. He kissed her so insanely that she thought her blood was freezing. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

She gripped his shoulders to steady herself, softly kissing him back.

But this was only for this moment. She’d already told herself that she cannot allow herself and Sylas to get tangled up in this kind of relationship. Anything connected to Cain is something she should run away from.

But she couldn’t seem to push him away. He tasted divine.

When he finally pulled back, both hands were braced against the tree behind her, and his eyes had gone silver again, "So, what’s this thing you mentioned about leaving?"

She gazed into his eyes, "Gravemont isn’t safe for me. It was never safe,"

"Was it because of what happened last night?"

"Yes, and so much more," She sighed, "Cain...he knows I’m here. He’s always known. He knows all of my movements. He orchestrated them all. He wants something terrible to happen with me being here, that’s why I have to go. As far away as possible from the Veil,"

"How did you get to know all this?"

She looked away, "I found one of his spies,"

Sylas lifted her chin gently, and she locked eyes with him again, "Who?" Sylas asked, but it sounded more like a demand.

She shook her head, "It doesn’t matter. Once I’m gone, he...,"

"Who is Cain’s spy, Venom?!" Sylas pressed, keeping his voice controlled.

"Are you going to hurt him if I tell you?"

"Are you trying to protect him?" Sylas returned, "You have a soft spot for this person,"

"Are you going to hurt him?" She repeated the question, more demanding this time.

"Eric Pendragon,"

"No!" She snapped, "It’s not...," Wait, why was she still trying to protect him after everything he’s done?

"I know it is," Sylas cupped her cheek, "You have the exact same look on your face whenever you think about him," He murmured, then swiped off a tear that had escaped her eyes, "I wish you’d have half of that look in your eyes when you think of me,"

She saw the desire in his eyes. She was drawn to it, drawn to his everything, and staring at him like this was bliss, but there are some things in this life that you’d want so bad, but the circumstances won’t align for you.

"Professor..., we can’t,"

"Sylas," He corrected, and sucked in a sharp breath, "What can’t we?"

"We can’t...be this," She gestured at both of them, "We shouldn’t,"

"Why?"

"Because I can’t, okay? I’ve got bigger problems,"

"That’s not the reason,"

"It is!"

"You’re lying, Venom," He paused, "Is it because you... know about me? The paper you found, at my office the other day,"

There was a heavy silence, then she nodded.

"Are you... really Golden-black?" She asked.

"Yes," He replied.

She held her breath.

"Everything I do is to stop Cain,"

"How does someone stop someone like him?"

"Carefully. Strategically," he held her chin, "But I’m not perfect at stopping him. Two of his men somehow sneaked into this school which led to everything that went down last night. Yes, he knows you’re here, but he won’t be able to get to you. I won’t let that happen,"

So Gravemont was the safest, and most dangerous place for her. That did not do anything to relieve her.

"Cain doesn’t know who Golden black is. I don’t want you getting involved in my case and it leads to him finding out...,"

"He won’t," Sylas assured, his tone confident, "He hasn’t for over ten years. You coming into the picture won’t change that,"

She shook her head, "But I bring bad luck. The Universe hates me, the Moon Goddess probably hates me too that’s why bad things happen whenever I go. I...," She sighed, swallowing tightly, "I can’t risk it,"

"I know you’re scared,"

"Of course I’m scared!" She suddenly blasted out, letting go as more tears streamed down her face, "Because of me, William had a terrible injury to the head, and I just found out that the person I thought was my best friend has been playing me all this time. That Cain knows I’m here, and Eric could tell him that I know he’s the spy and I’m so scared that at any moment, he would swarm in here with an army of wolves, and kill everything that gets in his way just to get to know. My only option is to leave," She broke even harder, her voice cracking, "I...I don’t know what to do. I don’t...,"

Sylas could only hug her. She buried her face in his chest and cried.

He hated seeing her like this. He hated that she was starting to know the truth, and it was killing her. His eyes twitched, and fury shimmered beneath the calm like it was about to explode.

All he wanted to do now was to protect her. And to do that, he needed to get stronger.

He needed to make a decision. Something that would change him forever, something irreversible, because that is the only way to protect her from it all.
