Chapter 101: The Stabilizer

Celeste cut her off sharply, "Don’t say it,"

She went still, still reeling from the shock.

"My other form is none of your concern," he said, his voice suddenly edged with steel, "Not now. Not here,"

"But Cain.. he..."

"He used it," Celeste said flatly, "That’s all you need to know for now,"

Theo felt the weight of it and the hidden pain in his eyes.

Suddenly she understood the warm milk.

The silence.

The way he recognised something in her, she didn’t know how to name.

He wasn’t just being kind.

He recognised her fear because it was something they shared.

Celeste turned his head slightly, purple eyes settling on her, "Whatever he wants from you..." His voice tightened, "...he’ll stop at nothing. I learned that the hard way,"

Theo’s fingers curled on her knees, "Celeste..." she whispered.

He exhaled slowly, eyes drifting shut again, "You asked what I meant when I said I once played into his hands," he murmured, "Now you know. If you’re still planning on leaving, I can’t stop you,"

They went silent again. Curiosity swarmed Theo’s head, and she kept glancing at him every two seconds like he would suddenly...change. She wondered what his trigger was, or if he also had a special wolf like her that could tweak his features.

But unlike her, Celeste seemed more refined and masculine.

He was much taller and did not give off a whiff of feminine scent, unlike her Jasmine undertone.

There had to be some kind of other... mystery behind how he changed. He was probably not even born female like she was.

She couldn’t help herself, "What exactly did Cain want from you?"

Celeste sighed exasperatedly, "Let me rest. I already told you so much already,"

"I was also quiet but you spoke to me first. Now, you have to face the consequences,"

He opened his eyes, "Don’t push your luck, little ghost,"

She faced him properly, "How about this? We’ll both ask each other five questions and we absolutely have to answer,"

"No!" He deadpanned.

"Yes!" She pushed softly, "We both get to know each other better,"

"I don’t want to,"

"Come on,"

"No,"

"Come on,"

"No," Celeste stood up quickly, and she stood up too.

"Come on,"

"I said, No!" His eyes flashed dangerously, "Don’t make me punch you,"

"Don’t do that to your fellow woman,"

He groaned, "Don’t ever say that. Ever! Again!"

"Come on,"

"Have you always been this annoying?"

"Come on,"

He started to walk away. She was right next to him.

"Please, come on. I’m dying, here. I’m so curious about you. Come on!"

"I need my silence back,"

"Come on,"

His face twisted and he glared at her, "I should have just left you to cry your way into more trouble,"

"Come on!" She linked her arm with his.

He stared at her like she was insane, "Let go, now!!"

"Come on," She drawled.

"Fine! Fine!"

She smiled.

"Now, let go,"

"Yeah, let’s go!!" She dragged him back to their former spot.

"I’m only answering three questions. Nothing more, nothing less!" He snapped.

"Better than nothing," She said, and sat down right in front of him.

He looked at her carefully. She was still scared, but at the same time, she was excited.

A little too excited. At least the tears were no longer rolling down uncontrollably.

"Celeste," She called, and the air tensed around them, "What exactly are you? And how is that related to the Veil?"

He eyed her, "You just asked two questions at the same time,"

"Alright Alright," She said and corrected herself, "How are you as an entity defined in relation to the Veil,"

He seriously glared at her this time, and she tried to keep a straight face, trying so hard not to smile.

Then, his eyes died into that lazy weight again, "I’m a stabilizer. When the key moves and when the Veil stirs, I’m what keeps it from descending into chaos,"

Key? Descending into chaos?

"My turn," Celeste said, and it was as if they were playing truth or dare again. But only truth this time.

"How are you still alive after you were confirmed as dead last night?"

"I rejected death,"

"What?"

"My turn," She grinned, "Under what circumstances do you... change?"

"Moon events," Celeste replied, "Full Moon. Blood Moon. Silver Moon. Void Moon. Every important moon event changes me. The Veil shifts during those days, and so do I,"

She nodded. But what the hell was a Void Moon?

"My turn," He said, "How did you reject death?"

"I refused to stay dead,"

"Give me more than that," He insisted.

She sighed, "I kind of fought something inside of me." She took out the pendant and showed it to him, "This pendant keeps another shadow of me under control, and when I died, it took over, and my body moved under its command. I felt that movement and that was what prompted me to reject death so I wouldn’t hurt anyone,"

Celeste stared at the pendant intensely, "The lock,"

She looked down at it too then back at him, "The what?"

"The Lock and Key," He repeated, "That necklace is what was used to make the Veil in the first place. It’s responsible for trapping everything sinister in that other dimension. It can also open the Veil,"

"I had no idea," She murmured, "I have one more question, right?"

"Go on,"

"You said you prevent it from descending into Chaos...Were you there last night, inside the Hallow when the Veil shifted?"

Celeste’s eyes darkened slightly, "Yes, I was there. I watched you die,"

"You were the one who stopped the forest from turning I and Liam into bones, weren’t you?"

Celeste nodded, "You’re smart, it scares me,"

"I’m scared, too," She admitted.

"My last question goes like this...Do you understand why your presence is unsettling to the Veil?"

Theo frowned, hesitant. "Unsettling? Me? What do you mean?"

He leaned back against the tree, the shadows of the trees casting strange angles over his face, "The pendant keeps the Veil contained, yes... but when you’re near it, the energies shift in ways I’ve never seen before. I don’t fully understand it... yet. But I know it reacts to you,"

Theo’s heart skipped. "Wait... the pendant reacts to me?"

Celeste’s eyes narrowed, "Yes. It happened last night after you collapsed and the pendant reacted back. You... you trigger it. The thing inside the Veil noticed something unusual in you,"

Theo swallowed hard, thinking back to the demon that was her, "So... you mean I’m like a... a key?"
