Chapter 242: Forgotten.

"What are you guys staring at so attentively?" Shikera asked, drawing a chair back to sit on it. From the distance where she spotted them, she had seen Mignon and Alan staring in a particular direction with an unfathomable expression on their faces. She had not been able to make out what they were staring at as it was a floor to ceiling glass window.

"Look at that little girl. I thought she looked a little like me, and Alan thinks so too," Mignon replied, pointing in the direction of that little girl she had seen. "Look at that, she’s even looking at us as if she can recognize us."

Shikera traced Mignon’s line of sight and spotted the little girl in question.

"Esther..." The name had dropped from her mouth before she could stop herself. Standing to her feet, she hurriedly wore her facemask back.

"Let’s go, Leah. We can’t stay here," she said with a tone of urgency.

Alan joined her instantly and picked up his bag, but Mignon seemed to be shocked at something else.

"Look at that, Kera. There’s someone that looks like you," she exclaimed, the pitch of her voice rising in surprise.

Shikera and Alan returned the gaze to the glass room, with Alan noticing something else immediately.

"That woman also, she looks like an older version of you, Kera. Hold on...do you have a twin, Kera? Is that your mother and sister? And that young girl, is she your sister too? Since Mignon is related to you..." Alan trailed off when he felt a tap on his hand from Mignon.

Her own eyes were off the people in the ’glass room’ but Shikera’s eyes seemed to stay fixed on them.

"Ssshhh," Mignon hushed him from talking,"Are they Kera’s family?"

Alan shrugged, as he continued looking around to see if there were any guards or people positioned around them that could be watching them. Grandma Cooper had only told him Shikera’s husband family might search for her, and he must help the two ladies avoid them with anything he could do.

Meanwhile, Shikera almost laughed out loud in self pity. Somehow, she didn’t feel any hurt as she stared at the people who had wide smiles on each of their faces. They all seemed to have adjusted to their lives.

There was Raymond who was currently speaking to Natalia Anderson, then Ruthlyn and Enoch laughing at something they were staring at on her phone; Hazel and Elizabeth Anderson also had smiles on their faces as the latter’s hand patted Esther’s hair. It looked like Elizabeth had taken her place in that circle of family.

As much as she wanted to avert her gaze from that scene, Shikera felt her eyes were glued on them. She wanted to continue staring at them and she was also hoping to see more people. The three people she missed the most.

Ethan, Liam and Cyprian. She was sure they were there, but maybe had excused themselves to do one thing on the other. She was damn sure they had all moved on! That explained the reason why her journey through the city had been smooth and without any guards popping out in front of them.

Just then, Shikera saw the smile on all of their faces, except Esther who had not been smiling, dissapear as they all turned towards a particular direction. The polite smiles which came back to sit on their lips showed her that they were greeting whoever the new person was. Subconsciously, Shikera craned her neck to see who it was.

Ethan? Cyprian? Or was it Liam?

She waited impatiently for a few seconds until the person stepped into view, her heart dropping in disappointment and lifting in happiness at the same time. She was dissapointed because the new entrance was Team leader Zuresh, and she could vividly remember what the woman said about being her mother’s friend. It turned out it was really true... Team leader Zuresh was Natalia Anderson’s friend, and they were back together now. No misplaced goddaughter or mistaken daughter.

On the other hand, Shikera was happy because it was none of the people she had expected. At least, she could still give herself the opportunity to daydream about them missing her. That she was not forgotten by them all already.

"Kera? I know this seems to be your family but what I don’t understand is, why is someone that looks like me standing there?" Mignon’s voice reached into her thoughts, stopping her from continuing with her staring game.

Shikera shook her head, "Now is no time for questions. We need to leave here now, Leah."

"I know that. Just answer my question first," Mignon pressed. Just now, while Shikera had been looking at everyone in that room, her own eyes had been on that particular girl.

She had seen the longing in the girl’s eyes as if she was holding herself back from calling out to them. And now, if she was not mistaken, she could see tears streaming down the girl’s eyes. The little girl had been using her sleeves in cleaning them up, and that simple act brought pain to her own chest.

"Of course, it’s because you are sisters. Isn’t that woman supposed to be you two’s mother?" Alan replied, his brows furrowing in confusion.

"Stay out of this, Alan. You won’t understand," Mignon deadpanned. She was still waiting for an answer from Shikera, who did not look like she was ready to answer.

"Let’s find somewhere else to talk, Leah. I will explain this—We should leave for now."

Shikera pulled Mignon and tried to guide her away, but the latter refused to budge.

"Kera, that girl is crying. If...if you know her, don’t you think you should ask her to stop cryin?" Mignon requested. In reality, she wanted to see the girl comforted, for her own peace of mind.

Shikera was surprised.

"Esther is crying? Why?" she turned back to the glass room which she now knew was privately booked by her former family, and her gaze settled on Esther.

’She recognizes me,’ Shikera whispered in her head.
