Chapter 204: Scared.

Music recommendation: Nightcore By Alan Walker.

’Get yourself together, Shikera. You can do this! You planned for all this already, remember?’

Dabbing her eyes with her kerchief, Shikera stepped into the departmental store while pulling her empty luggage behind her. She headed straight to the clothes section, making sure to avoid all the CCTV cameras positioned at strategic locations in the store. She must not leave an hint of how she moved, for Liam or...Ethan, if he cared to look for her.

She threw a quick glance at the watch on her wrist to see that an hour passed since she left Chris alone.

"Esther would be almost home by now," she mumbled unconsciously. She had to be fast and get out of this place before Esther got home and make everyone wonder why she was not home too.

Shikera picked out the clothes nearest to her without checking the design or price tag, as she only wanted to get out of here as fast as she could. After all, she didn’t come to the section for designer dresses in the first place.

After that, she picked out two sneakers and sandals, knowing she would not have the need for pumps, heels or any other kind of shoes again.

After wandering around the whole section for another ten minutes, she hurried to the cashier and paid for the clothes before heading out of the store.

Exhaling dejectedly, she sighed,"You are good to go now, Kera. You can do this!"

[Esther came with me.]

Settled comfortably on the chair in his study, Ethan frowned when he received the message from his father. Didn’t Esther leave the house with Shikera? He proceeded to dial her number, waiting impatiently as the phone rang.

"Daddy?"

"Esther, where is Shikera?" he asked immediately.

"Mummy? She said she’s coming back, she went to talk with Grandpa," came the reply from Esther.

"Oh...okay, tell her I called." He hung up on the call, his confusion yet to subside. Why would Shikera leave her phone with Esther? And if the two were still together, why was she going to the DeLoach’s mansion instead of coming home? He was about to call again and ask Esther to find Shikera and hand her the phone, but he was interrupted by an incoming call.

(Music Rec: Diamond heart by Alan walker.)

The frown on his face deepened on seeing the caller ID, as this person was not supposed to call him except there was something really wrong.

"Come in," he said, immediately after picking the call.

He only had to wait for three minutes before a man wearing black walked in and came to stand in front of him.

"What’s the problem, Cole?"

"The Jordans attacked—"

The door was suddenly swung open from outside and Raymond stormed in, a shocked look on his face.

"Ethan..." he trailed off, seeing the other man, Cole, standing in the study.

Ethan raised his brow. For Raymond to call him Ethan, it meant that he had something really important and urgent to say.

"What’s the matter?" he asked again.

Raymond bit his lips, hesitating to talk. He signaled to Cole and smiled nervously. "He also came to say something, right? I’ll go after him," he said, thinking that Cole had come to say something that would make Ethan happy. At least, it would set him in a good mood before listening to the bad news Raymond brought.

"Cole," Ethan called again, his eyes returning to rest on Cole’s.

"The Jordans attacked the restaurant where Miss Anderson went for lunch, and their target was her."

The temperature in the room decreased abruptly as Ethan rose to his feet.

"What happened to her?" he asked, his tone hardened and cold.

"She is safe! We got there early enough after your message this morning and Miss Anderson too, she was lucky twice. We have casualties of a waiter and some other people who were wounded during the commotion," Cole informed as fast as could, his words coming out in a rush. With the change of air in the room, he felt like he would suffocate if he stayed here longer.

"Did you get any of them?" Ethan asked again.

"We got the two of them."

"Did you leave her there alone?"

"No, Sir. I was driving her to the hospital when your father intercepted us. He took Miss Anderson and Miss DeLoach with him, as I had to come here to inform you."

Ethan nodded, an eerie smirk creeping up on his face.

"Did you not have a phone?"

"Sir?" Cole was surprised, as he had not expected that question. Wasn’t the main task to rescue Miss Anderson and Miss DeLoach? And he had done that well so why was the boss still angry?

He got the answer when a hard blow came landing down on his chest. Staggering backwards, he made sure to put as much space as he could between him and Ethan, before assuming his former position. He had to ignore the pain.

"You did not have a phone to call me immediately? Do you know how scared she must have been?"

If Ethan was yelling, Cole would have felt better but the man’s voice was low and extremely creepy, like he wanted to instill fear in Cole’s heart. And he was successful.

"I...I wanted to but, I...I thought it would be better to—"

"Shut it, Cole. How was she feeling when she left with my father?"

Cole was nervous, trying to remember how Shikera’s face looked like when she was leaving to join Chris in his car.

"She was talking with Miss DeLoach, and the two of them were smiling... She was alright," he replied, hoping that his words would be able to alleviate Ethan’s anger.

"What idiot would smile after an accident like that? Did you tell her she was the target?"

Cole nodded vigorously, "Yes, I did."

"Damnit!" 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

And there it was, the saving yell came.

Ps: The music recommendations are highly recommended, haha! I listened to it while writing this scene and I think it would help you visualize the scene better.
