Chapter 388: 388 Under Attack

Liu Banxia was in a very good mood because of his continuous victories.

Even though, as a doctor, diagnosing patients was his fundamental duty, the increasing number and complexity of diseases made it a hard task to accomplish.

He was now thoroughly enjoying his career, not only because he was getting recognition and praise from others, but also because he found immense personal satisfaction in it. It was engrossing and addictive; he simply couldn’t stop.

His spirits were considerably high, and he even found his meals more delectable today, though he was never one to be picky with food.

"We had an amazing day today! Let’s keep up the effort tonight!" After returning to the emergency hall, Liu Banxia called out enthusiastically.

The whole team laughed. The atmosphere at the emergency center was really vibrant and lively.

"Sister Wang, you’re on duty tonight? If there’s nothing urgent, go get some rest early. I’m full of energy," Liu Banxia said as he approached Wang Ying.

"Banxia, can I have a word with you, seriously?" Wang Ying asked.

Liu Banxia was taken aback. He nodded and said, "Sister Wang, whether it’s speaking frankly, rebuking me, or even hitting me, I won’t even frown. If it weren’t for you and Sister Li, I might not have made it through the residency training."

"This kid, always so impulsive," Wang Ying sighed helplessly.

"That’s exactly what I wanted to talk to you about. Initially, I thought your impulsive nature was unsuitable for a doctor. Patients usually expect their doctors to be more mature and composed," she confessed.

"But lately, I’ve noticed that your personality also has its advantages—it allows for quicker interaction and communication with patients. Perhaps patients feel relaxed in the presence of an expressive doctor."

"Our doctors see so many patients daily. Maintaining this level of enthusiasm would be a steep task; you might be the only one capable of doing so."

"I can’t tell if this consultation style is good or bad, but I noticed it and thought I should mention it. Have Shi Lei and Director Zhou also spoken to you about this?"

Liu Banxia nodded. "Yes, they did talk about it. Their views are similar to yours—they told me to choose for myself. They said being a doctor is also a job, and you perform best when you’re most comfortable."

"As you said, our doctors have to see so many patients. If we were to maintain a smiling face for each one of them, our facial muscles would likely tire out."

"I just feel that every patient who comes in is already feeling unwell. If I can lighten the atmosphere, it might lessen some of their anxiety."

"However, Director Zhou did criticize me. He said it’s somewhat acceptable now that I have a bit of a reputation. But if I had started off this way, it might have backfired. I guess I was just lucky."

Wang Ying laughed. "As long as you’re aware of this situation, it’s okay. I will go check on the patients’ conditions now."

Liu Banxia stepped aside. Everyone with a leading position at the Emergency Center was extremely busy. If it wasn’t for the backup he had, he wouldn’t even think of sticking around.

He had to give it to the interns currently working in the Emergency Center. They were all good, with a positive attitude towards their work, and their records of patient history were notably detailed.

This meant that advising doctors like Liu Banxia could save a lot of time by not having to go over the case files thoroughly. For now, he only gave Su Wenhao’s case files a cursory glance.

"What’re you up to now?" Xu Hui, who was on duty that night, asked.

"Nothing, I was just thinking about how high everyone’s spirits are these days. Since the Chief Director wants to keep these kids here, we have to push them harder," Liu Banxia replied with a smile.

"It can’t be that easy, can it? I heard that quite a few of them have connections. I don’t think they will stick around and endure the hardship here in the future," Xu Hui pointed out.

"Su Wenhao should be alright; he is an earnest kid, similar to Shi Lei, and he really looks up to you. Xu Yino and Liu Yiqing might be a different case; they have connections."

"From Internal Medicine, Zhou Shangkai and Cao Peng... at most, we might be able to retain one. Huang Bo, Miao Rui, Li Hao—I am not sure about these three. Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Brother Xu, I have to look at you closely to confirm that you haven’t been replaced by an imposter. How do you know all this?" Liu Banxia asked with a wry smile.

Xu Hui nodded towards Wang Chao. "If anyone in our hospital wants to know such information, Wang Chao is the go-to person. You know about his connections, right?"

Liu Banxia nodded. "Yes, I’m aware. I didn’t expect that he’d become such a gossip. That’s good though; he won’t be able to escape to another job. He’ll have to stick with the emergency center."

"I hope these kids can stay here as well. With them assisting us, work is so much easier. Who knows what kind of people will come in the next batch? And if there are people assigned from other units, it’ll be even harder to manage."

"It’s always been this way, hasn’t it? Nothing is ever that easy. Anyway, you’ll soon be stepping down as chief resident. What are your plans after that?" Xu Hui asked curiously.

Liu Banxia shook his head. "I haven’t really thought about it. All I want is to be a steady attending physician. I want to have a normal work cycle and spend some quality time courting Qiaoqiao."

Xu Hui rolled his eyes. Easier said than done. Based on Liu Banxia’s performance, how could they let him be just like everyone else?

Even he was impressed now. After all, Liu Banxia had been doing his job earnestly, and his progress was evident. None of the doctors he had seen complete their residency training had performed as well.

"Teacher Liu, there are two car accident patients! The driver is seriously injured with bleeding from his left ear. They will be brought here shortly," a dispatch nurse called out.

Liu Banxia glanced at the eager interns. "There’s not much to do right now. Wang Chao and Qi Wentai will handle their case. All of you assist them."

Upon hearing his words, Xu Yino and the rest were delighted. This was the advantage of being under President Liu. Although he sometimes sprung assessments unexpectedly and was strict during teaching, he gave them more practical opportunities.

Liu Banxia pondered for a moment and followed them outside. It was necessary to assess these interns. After all, they were in their final year of internship and needed to practice handling patients independently.

Wang Chao and Qi Wentai exchanged looks after seeing Liu Banxia.

"Li Hao, I will supervise as you handle a patient with minor injuries," Qi Wentai said.

"Su Wenhao, I will oversee as you handle the seriously injured driver," Wang Chao added.

"Oh my god, is it starting now?" Xu Yino exclaimed in shock.

"What are you two standing there for? Hurry up and choose your partners!" Liu Banxia called out.

Hearing this, they both snapped back to reality, their expressions becoming slightly serious. They had thought they were just going to observe again; they hadn’t expected to take the lead this time!

Choosing their partners was easy; they just had to pick whoever was closest. The sound of the ambulance could be heard already; they didn’t have time to delay.

"A pedestrian, a 38-year-old male, has abrasions on his elbow, knee injuries, and possible left arm fracture," the paramedic said once the ambulance arrived.

"Can you walk on your own? Then please follow me," Li Hao responded.

"Actually, I’m not badly hurt. It’s my fault for looking at my phone," the patient said with a bitter smile.

Liu Banxia frowned. Something felt off.

"The driver is unconscious; he crashed into a tree. His abdomen is in pain, there’s bleeding from his right ear, and we are unsure if he has fractured his skull," the paramedic continued.

"Emergency Room 1. I’ll perform an ultrasound on his abdomen, Huang Bo connect the ECG, and Xu Yino check the head and neck," Su Wenhao instructed. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

After speaking, Su Wenhao glanced at Liu Banxia, who remained expressionless and did not respond.

"President Liu, are you training newcomers now?" Paramedic Huang asked curiously once everyone had entered.

"We have no choice. Our Chief Director said they are all promising prospects, and we’re trying our best to retain them," Liu Banxia replied.

"How have you guys been lately? I heard you’ve all been extremely busy, and the turnover rate on your side seems to be much higher than ours."

"You’re telling me! The stress of being out in the field is overwhelming. We’re all wishing we could assign more tasks to hospitals like yours," Paramedic Huang replied with a bitter smile.

"Let’s stop chatting. I have to get going. It’s always busiest around the holidays, and I haven’t had a break in half a month. Goodbye," Paramedic Huang said before taking the stretcher from the nurse and heading straight for his vehicle.

Everyone’s job is tough, Liu Banxia reflected. His work was taxing, and so was theirs. He’d experienced fieldwork himself; the pressure was no less than that of treating severely injured patients in the operating room.

Just as he was about to return, he noticed someone rushing towards him out of the corner of his eye. Suddenly, he felt a stab in his side and instinctively shifted.

As Liu Banxia turned around, he saw the attacker, who was armed with a dagger.

"It’s you, it’s you..." the assailant muttered, momentarily stunned, then lunged at him again, brandishing the dagger.

This time, he wasn’t aiming for the waist; he was aiming for Liu Banxia’s neck.

Liu Banxia didn’t have time to think; he did everything he could to fall backward. Even though landing on his butt hurt, he managed to dodge the blade by a hair.

However, the attacker was truly frenzied. Seeing that Liu Banxia had dodged again, he swung the knife towards his stomach, hell-bent on taking his life.

This time, Liu Banxia had a moment to prepare. Being tall with long legs, he lifted his foot and kicked at the attacker with all his might.

The attacker grunted and was sent flying by Liu Banxia.
