Chapter 145: Chapter 144: Leng Yuan Makes a Cart

When Leng Yuan heard his wife talking about marrying one or two more, his face darkened.

"Don’t talk nonsense."

He didn’t want anyone else. He only wanted her.

He wouldn’t trade her for any number of flatbed carts.

In truth, making a flatbed cart wasn’t that difficult, just a bit time-consuming. Anyone in the village skilled with woodworking could do it as long as they had blueprints.

The problem was that blueprints were hard to come by.

But for Leng Yuan, that wasn’t difficult at all.

The commune school was poor. Its desks, chairs, and benches were all broken but still in use. Leng Yuan couldn’t stand it, so he decided to go into the mountains, chop down some trees, and build a new batch himself.

At first, he didn’t know how to do any of this, but he started to learn and gradually grew to love it.

Leng Yuan was the type of person who had to do everything perfectly. Not only did he spend two years diligently learning from an old master craftsman, but he also started studying books on his own once he understood the basics.

Never mind simple things like desks, chairs, benches, and flatbed carts—he even had a crystal-clear understanding of the structure of wooden buildings.

This was also why Leng Yuan was able to figure out how to build the threshing machine as soon as Gu Jiaojiao explained the principles behind it.

His skill was just on another level; he understood it the moment he heard it.

However, Leng Yuan didn’t like to show off and understood the importance of being low-key, so very few people were aware of his talents.

All of this was the result of hard work he’d put in behind the scenes.

Forget other people; even Chen JianShe was in the dark. But as Leng Yuan’s loyal admirer, he was beyond reproach—not a hint of jealousy, just pure admiration.

’Chen JianShe is probably the only one who can get along so well with Leng Yuan,’ Gu Jiaojiao thought. ’Anyone more prone to jealousy would probably end up hating him.’

’Some people are so outstanding that they naturally attract jealousy. There’s no other reason for it—it’s just because you’re too amazing.’

Looking at the flatbed cart, Gu Jiaojiao quickly noticed something unusual.

The cart’s wheels weren’t iron, but polished wood. All the connections were wood joints; not a single steel nail was used from end to end. Even the flatbed itself was pieced together with interlocking joinery.

Though it was made of wood, it seemed even sturdier than a store-bought one.

"Hon— Leng Yuan, you’re just too incredible!"

Gu Jiaojiao had almost blurted out "hubby," but she hit the brakes just in time when she saw Chen JianShe.

That term of endearment wasn’t very common yet. It was fine to say it when the two of them were alone, but in front of others, she had to be more reserved.

Leng Yuan didn’t think making a flatbed cart was anything special.

But seeing the adoration in his wife’s eyes, his heart melted.

He wanted to reach out and pat her head, but he saw that his hands were dirty and stopped himself.

But the upward curve of his lips still revealed his good mood.

Standing to the side, Chen JianShe suddenly felt like a third wheel. ’Ah, forget it. I’ll just get back to work,’ he thought.

He walked over to the cart and single-handedly moved all the firewood from it to the space under the shed.

The firewood had already been neatly bundled on the mountain, so all he had to do was stack it.

Gu Jiaojiao examined the cart for a while longer, then left the two working men undisturbed and went to the kitchen to bring out dinner.

Tonight’s dinner was quite sumptuous.

There was millet porridge and braised pork ribs; Gu Jiaojiao had cooked up all that was left—over three pounds of them.

The large bones and ribs were all gone now, but there was still some wild boar meat left.

Besides the ribs, there was also a dish of Squirrel-Shaped Mandarin Fish.

When this dish was brought out, both men were stunned.

The fish was beautifully shaped and golden-brown, and its aroma was tantalizing. It looked delicious.

Without any prompting from Gu Jiaojiao, the two men washed their hands much faster than usual.

Finally, there was a dish of pickled cucumbers.

The three dishes were placed on the table. The two men, now cleaned up, sat down with her to eat.

As usual, Leng Yuan picked up his chopsticks first, and only then did Gu Jiaojiao and Chen JianShe begin to eat.

Leng Yuan sighed in resignation.

’My wife seems to have some misunderstanding about me,’ he thought. ’I’ve never cared about my status in the eyes of others. I believe that life is one’s own to live, and only you know if you’re truly happy.’

’But whenever someone else is present, Jiaojiao always has me start eating first.’

Leng Yuan was the first to pick up his chopsticks, but he used them to place a piece of food on Gu Jiaojiao’s plate.

"You’ve worked hard."
