Vera Xavier didn’t know a thing about jade, so when they asked for her opinion, she could only laugh it off.
She only half-listened to the talk about going to Zartania to buy jade and didn’t take it to heart, but she did pick up on some business opportunities from their conversation.
Pursuing her own goals required a great deal of money, and her education was expensive too, so she definitely had to prioritize earning some. Their conversation gave her an idea. It looked like she would need to take a trip to Zartania after the college entrance exams. She had to earn a solid nest egg for herself, one way or another.
A faint smile played in Vera Xavier’s eyes. She felt a gaze as venomous as a snake’s land on her, and when she met it, she saw, unsurprisingly, that it was Cara Preston.
She shot Cara Preston a beaming glance, which in Cara’s eyes looked smug and brazen. It nearly made Cara spit blood with rage.
Her poise and composure, neither arrogant nor rash, showcased her excellent character. She was on par with, if not superior to, the so-called city folk, and carried herself more like a well-bred young lady from a prestigious family.
Elise Langdon, meanwhile, squeezed her way to Master Nathan’s side and asked in a wheedling tone, "Mr. Nathan, isn’t Nathaniel coming back for your birthday?"
Master Nathan’s tone was indifferent. "I really don’t know. He’s always done as he pleases. He seems to be on a mission, so I have no idea if he’ll be back."
Elise Langdon couldn’t hide her disappointment. To be blunt, she had come today hoping to see Nathaniel.

Master Nathan was in high spirits today and had a great time chatting with his old friends. He wanted to have a few drinks, but Vera Xavier swapped his liquor for plain water. He was a little disgruntled, but when he saw her serious expression, he held his tongue. He had been about to protest, but the memory of his last health scare made him swallow his words and reluctantly drink the water as if it were fine liquor.
Master Nathan felt so aggrieved, but he wasn’t about to say a word!
After the banquet ended, Master Nathan asked the members of the Preston family to stay behind. Zachary Preston, utterly embarrassed by Cara’s behavior, insisted that only Vera Xavier should stay. Then, he pulled Rona Langdon and Cara away and left immediately.

Once they were gone, the house finally grew quiet. Master Nathan furtively pulled a large box of chocolates from a cabinet and handed it to Vera Xavier. "Someone brought these back a little while ago. I figured you’d like them, so I set them aside just for you. Those two women in your family—the older and the younger one—are just vexing to look at, and I have no desire to see them. That’s why I never gave this to you. Take it home later, and enjoy it by yourself. Don’t you dare share any with them! They don’t deserve it!"
