The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 160: Her Gift
Zachary Preston and Rona Langdon were just coming downstairs when they saw Vera’s state. Rona asked, "What’s wrong? Why is your face so red? Did you do something you feel guilty about?"
Vera had no intention of explaining anything to her. She just said, "Can we leave for Grandpa and Grandma’s house now?"
Zachary Preston nodded. He was also a little curious seeing Vera’s flushed face, but he didn’t ask.
Cara Preston shot her a sidelong glance and ground her teeth, but said nothing.
Her grandparents’ home was also in the countryside, not too far from Xavier Village where Vera had lived before moving back to the city. Only one village separated them.
Their arrival made her grandparents very happy. However, their expressions grew a little complicated when they saw Vera. In their eyes, although Vera was their granddaughter, they had never lived with her, so things always felt a bit awkward.
After coming inside, Vera obediently called out, "Hi, Grandpa! Hi, Grandma!"
Her grandparents smiled and nodded. Her grandmother asked her, "Vera, are you getting used to living in the city?"
Before Vera could answer, Cara Preston cut in with a smile, "The living conditions in the city are so much better than in the countryside. What could she possibly not be used to?"
Her grandmother’s gaze deepened. Cara Preston continued, "Grandma, you probably don’t know, but my sister is a big celebrity in the city now. She placed first in our class, and Wesley Kane, the guy whose engagement she broke off, is looking at her in a whole new light. He even ran to our school to try and win her back."
Her grandmother’s brow furrowed, and she looked at Vera with worry in her eyes. As an elder, she couldn’t help but lecture Vera a little. "Vera, I wasn’t very supportive when you said you wanted to marry Wesley Kane. You’re young and don’t know any better. The Kane family might have some money, but they are by no means good people. You’d best not get involved with them again, or you’ll be the one who gets hurt."
Cara Preston immediately tried to sow discord. "Grandma, how can you say that about my sister? After all, she was the one who chose Wesley Kane."
After speaking, she nudged Vera’s shoulder and said, "Sister, Grandma’s words might have been a bit harsh, but she means well. You mustn’t get angry with her. It’s one thing to cause a ruckus at home, but don’t stir up more trouble here and make Grandma worry."
The grandmother’s expression soured when she heard this. Although she was an uneducated old woman, she was shrewd.
Hearing Cara’s words, she immediately thought Vera was an immature troublemaker. After all, the impression Cara had left on her was that of a sweet and sensible girl, so she didn’t doubt Cara’s words.
Vera ignored Cara Preston and looked at her grandmother. "Grandma, I’ll listen to you! I’m going to focus on my studies from now on and not get married so early. And don’t listen to Cara’s nonsense. I’ve already cut all ties with the Kane family, completely. If you don’t believe me, you can ask my dad!"
With that, she took a small radio out of her backpack and placed it in her grandmother’s hands. "I bought this with the pocket money I saved up. When you and Grandpa have some free time, you can use this to listen to operas."
The radio wasn’t large, nor was it too expensive—around two hundred yuan.
In her past life, she had heard her grandparents say they wanted a radio. But the two had been frugal their entire lives and couldn’t bear to buy one. And in that life, she hadn’t been on good terms with them. She could barely take care of herself right up until they passed away, so it was impossible for her to buy one for them.
