Chapter 158: Chapter 158: His Wife

The special assistant laughed and said, "Me, spoil him? You’re clearly the one who spoils him more! Last time he was on a mission at the border, he blew a drug lord’s head clean off, and weren’t you the one who covered for him?"

"He’s great at everything, but he’s too brutal and undisciplined. You need to have a talk with him one of these days. He can’t keep going on like this!" Seth Maverick frowned.

The special assistant gave a wry smile. "You’re the one who went to great lengths to recruit him. He certainly won’t listen to me!"

Just then, the phone in the temporary command post began to ring. The communications officer answered, seemed to pause for a moment, then stood up and said, "Reporting to the Chairman, there’s a call from someone named Vera Xavier. She’s asking for Deputy General Manager Nathan."

"Vera Xavier?" Seth Maverick frowned, looking toward his special assistant.

The special assistant had a good memory and recalled at once. "She’s the one from Nathaniel Nathan’s marriage application report!"

That’s right. The last time Nathaniel Nathan took leave, it wasn’t to visit family as he had told Vera Xavier—he was on marriage leave!

Because before that, he had already applied to the company to marry Vera Xavier, and his application had been approved!

This special security company had been managed under a strict, military-style system since its founding. All matters, from taking leave to anything else, were subject to rigorous standards. Every employee, up to and including the General Manager, was required to submit an application to get married.

He had left a number for Vera Xavier before he left. Now, she was calling it, and once the communications officer learned her identity, the call was transferred here to the command headquarters.

Seth Maverick’s face was a mask of curiosity. "Nathaniel Nathan is such an ice block. What kind of woman would be willing to marry him?"

"I’m very curious myself," the special assistant said with a smile.

Seth Maverick said to a nearby staff member, "Go get Nathaniel Nathan. Tell him Vera Xavier is on the phone for him."

The staff member ran out, and a moment later, Nathaniel Nathan came running back, leaving the man who delivered the message far behind him. Seth Maverick and the special assistant exchanged a look; the two words "Eight Diagrams" were practically carved onto their faces. It was a rare sight to see such an excited and proactive Nathaniel Nathan.

Nathaniel Nathan picked up the receiver. "Nathaniel Nathan speaking."

Vera Xavier had already been waiting by the phone for quite a while. Thankfully, Rona Langdon was upstairs packing for a trip to her grandparents’ house today. Otherwise, if she had seen Vera making a call like this, she would have chewed her out mercilessly.

She was just thinking that if he didn’t pick up soon, she would hang up. Just as she was about to give up, she heard his voice and immediately asked, "Are you on a mission? Am I interrupting?"

An unconscious hint of tenderness surfaced in Nathaniel Nathan’s eyes, and a faint smile played on his lips. ’Vera is worried about me.’ He was inwardly ecstatic, but his voice remained calm. "No, I’m completely free right now."

When Seth Maverick and the special assistant saw his expression, they thought their eyes were playing tricks on them. But even after rubbing their eyes, they could still see Nathaniel Nathan on the phone, a gentle look on his face!

’Good heavens! The normally ice-cold Nathaniel Nathan was actually capable of such a gentle expression. Did the sun rise in the west today?’

’And what was that about being "completely free"? You’ve got to be kidding! Special Team One and Special Team Two have been swamped for days preparing for this exercise!’

’And on top of that, he broke his own record for a decapitation strike today. Don’t tell me he was in a hurry because he had a date with his wife?’

Vera Xavier breathed a sigh of relief. "I’m glad you’re free. I was really worried I was bothering you."

"Did you call me because you missed me?" Nathaniel Nathan asked.

Seth Maverick and the special assistant were dumbstruck once again. ’Good heavens, the Nathaniel Nathan who walked in here has to be an imposter!’

He shot a sidelong glance at Seth Maverick and the special assistant, his meaning perfectly clear: ’Eavesdropping on someone else’s phone call is highly unethical! Especially for high-ranking leaders like yourselves!’
