The Celibate Tycoon Has Fallen-Chapter 2: What Jasper Yale Wants, She Cannot Give
Yelena Hughes sat in the black Bentley, silent throughout the drive. The car drove into The Summit Gardens and soon stopped in front of the gates.
She lifted her eyelids slightly. Stepping inside this place might be a descent into an abyss, but she couldn’t think of that kind of thing now.
"Young Master Yale, when will the drug be released?"
Yelena Hughes followed Jasper Yale inside. He entered the bedroom and handed her a set of clothes from the walk-in closet.
"Take a shower and change into these."
She put her hands behind her back, "But..."
"But what?"
Jasper saw right through her, "Things are going well with Justin Sutton?"
"We haven’t started anything yet."
"What a pity," Jasper’s words lacked any trace of regret. He tossed the clothes to her, "Get rid of that disgusting smell."
Back in the private room, everyone had been smoking.
She had no choice but to comply for now.
Yelena Hughes turned and entered the bathroom. The clothes Jasper gave her were a bit short on her; the original owner must have been petite.
She took a quick shower, opened the bathroom door, and walked out. Jasper, in a white bathrobe, sat on the sofa, palms resting on a set of cards, two fingers pinching a stack while he was playing.
Yelena Hughes tugged her clothes down a bit and walked over to Jasper’s side.
"Sit."
The skirt was also short, so she rested her hands on her legs after sitting down.
"Do you know how to play cards?" the man asked softly.
"I only know how to play Fight the Landlord."
Jasper leaned forward, tossed the cards onto the coffee table, and turned his head to look at her, "Your sister’s heart isn’t doing well?"
"Yes."
His expression was cold, a man devoid of compassion. "Coming to see me for your sister, that’s inspirational."
Yelena Hughes listened to this, her brows furrowing.
Jasper’s gaze dropped from her face right where they sat, indecorously.
She had a figure to speak of, one he’d experienced before, full of allure, the kind men love to encounter in bed.
"Shuffle the cards." Jasper leaned back lightly.
Yelena Hughes wore a very short top, and when she reached out, the shirt rode up, revealing a glimpse of her smooth waist.
Jasper naturally placed his hand on it, "Soft and supple."
She quickly tried to pull the shirt down, not expecting Jasper to abruptly change his tone, "Won’t let me touch? Then forget it, get out."
"But..."
"Get out."
Jasper’s voice turned completely cold, like icy water crystallizing.
Yelena Hughes was reluctant to be kicked out just like that, "Your purpose in developing new drugs is to save lives. My sister can’t even undergo surgery anymore; she could die at any moment."
Jasper’s gaze was razor-sharp, "Did I cause that?"
Yelena Hughes was speechless. He pinched up a card and ran its corner down from her cheek past her lips.
"Open your mouth."
She swatted Jasper’s wrist away; her sensitivities were heightened now.
That night a year ago, she had been utterly inexperienced.
Jasper pointed the cards toward the big bed, "I can save your sister, no problem, as much Heart Protection Peace as you need, you’ll have enough."
As for the price...
Yelena Hughes wasn’t a fool, how could she not understand?
She stood up, shaking her head solemnly, "You and Justin Sutton are friends."
Was she hoping he’d show mercy?
Jasper laughed without restraint, "That doesn’t stop me from playing with his woman."
Yelena Hughes retreated two steps, "This won’t do."
He showed impatience, pinching his fingers at the center of his brows, "You’re smart enough, right? Since you chose to get in the car, you should have known what I wanted."
"But I thought, you’d have a soft spot."
"Why would I?"
Yelena Hughes pressed her fingertips hard into her palm, "Because your new drug can save countless lives; surely you have a compassionate heart."
Hah, trying to morally bind him.
Ridiculous!
Just short of saying he’d glow with divine light.
Jasper’s words remained cold, "Go on."
She harbored naive hopes, "About the drug..."
Jasper tossed the cards onto the coffee table, not even looking her way again.
Yelena Hughes wished she could kneel down and beg him, but people like him have cold hearts and it would only invite deeper disdain.
She turned around and had only taken two steps before she heard Jasper Yale calling her.
"Yelena Hughes."
Her footsteps halted, her heart filled with hope.
"You weigh it yourself."
His words contained no threats, yet it seemed she was left with only a dead end.
Yelena fled in panic, feeling a chill as she was blown by the wind upon running out of The Summit Gardens.
There must be other ways, didn’t Justin Sutton say he was friends with him?
Yelena didn’t want to fool herself, but what Jasper wanted, she couldn’t give.
Yelena returned home, with her head lowered as she walked quickly into the house. The decor clearly showed some age, with peeling walls.
"Sis?" came a voice from inside.
Yelena draped a coat over herself, pushed open a room door and went in, seeing her sister sitting hunched on a chair by the window. "Sis, you’re back."
"Did Mom go to work the night shift?"
"Yes."
"Did you take your medicine?"
Anne Hughes barely had the strength to shake her head, "I don’t want to take it, it’s so bitter, and it’s useless after taking it..."
Yelena opened the drawer, took out a bottle of medication, poured out two pills and held them to her sister’s mouth. "Hurry up and take them."
There is no cure for her sister’s disease, and no doctor even dares to suggest surgery.
"Sis, I was so sleepy last night, I felt terrible. I tried lying down, but I couldn’t breathe..."
Yelena hugged her, the person in her arms was so thin she was just skin and bones, "Anne, take your medicine, you’ll get better after you take it."
Anne obediently swallowed the pills with a sip of water.
She swallowed too quickly, and the water and pills were vomited out.
Yelena tenderly wiped her sister’s mouth, "Let’s not take the medicine anymore. Anne, tomorrow I’ll take you to have steak."
"Steak, is it tasty?"
Yelena felt even more heartbroken, the family’s savings had long been exhausted due to Anne’s illness. If it weren’t for that fifty thousand, she wouldn’t have made it to today.
"Yes, it’s delicious. Sleep well, I’ll take you tomorrow."
Yelena didn’t sleep well at night, constantly waking up from nightmares, terrified that when daylight came, she would wake up and her sister would have permanently closed her eyes.
Mom returned home close to noon, exhausted from working all night.
Yelena hailed a cab and helped Anne out the door.
She chose a high-class western restaurant; Anne, even after sitting at the table, didn’t know where to place her hands and feet.
The sound of live piano music surrounded them, yet it made the sisters seem out of place.
A champagne rose was tilted on the table, Anne looked around nervously. "Sis, should we change to another place?"
"You don’t like it here? I already ordered."
Yelena handed the menu to the waiter, smiling at Anne, "I have a discount coupon here; it isn’t expensive."
There was a commotion at the entrance, Yelena looked over and saw Jasper Yale being escorted inside.
She quickly lowered her head, but it seemed to have little effect.
Yelena listened as the footsteps approached; she clenched her napkin, and out of the corner of her eye saw a pair of long legs arrive beside her.
Jasper paused for a moment; with his clear-cut features, he did almost nothing. Just by standing for a moment, he could capture the attention of every woman.
Anne curiously glanced at him, "Sis, do you know this person?"
This time, Yelena couldn’t say she didn’t know him; she braced herself and looked up.
What a coincidence, Young Master Yale.
Before she could utter those words, she saw Jasper frown, "How can just anyone get in?"
He dropped this remark and briskly walked away.
Yelena’s face showed a flash of embarrassment.
"Sis?"
Yelena thought to say ignore him, he’s just a lunatic.
But Jasper’s seat was not far from hers, and he was now her God of Medicine; she dared not offend him.
The dishes were served one by one, Yelena cut the steak for Anne, "You can’t drink alcohol, so I ordered you a beverage."
From the opposite side came the sound of a glass tipping over, Yelena saw that the red drink had spilled onto the ground.
Layers of bright red spread out, resembling the color of blood.
Anne seemed to see something, her breathing quickened, the color of her face turned as pale as paper.
"Anne?" Yelena hurriedly reached out to grab her hand, "What’s wrong?"
She couldn’t speak, her body tilted to the side, heavily falling to the floor, Anne’s hand still grasping the tablecloth, with steak and beverage all crashing down.
Not far away, Jasper, upon hearing the commotion, only lifted his eyelids slightly.
