Chapter 1246: Chapter 1246: Eavesdropping in the Bathroom

"Lang, do you know what Mr. Zheng wants with me?" Ghost tried to probe for information. Zheng Ji was a busy man, always swamped with affairs. To him, Ghost was just a minor figure. This time, Zheng Ji had Lang invite him over, which couldn’t be just for a casual chat. Honestly, Ghost didn’t really want to have any ties with Zheng Ji, but now that they’ve met, considering Zheng Ji’s substantial influence in East Sea, and his future role as Family Head Zheng, establishing a relationship early could be all gain with no loss.

"Well... Mr. Zheng didn’t specify, and given my position, it’s not appropriate for me to ask. But rest assured, Mr. Ye from Yanjing is a good friend of Mr. Zheng’s. Based on this, I’d infer that this banquet is likely something good."

"Is that really the case?" Ghost was skeptical. This Lang seemed pretty loyal to Zheng Ji. Expanding his influence, Zheng Ji naturally needed to win over more supporters internally while externally, he couldn’t do without people like Lang. All those "dirty" tasks could be handed over to someone like him.

"Of course, while I’m not Mr. Zheng’s confidant, I do know a bit about his character. If he weren’t capable, I wouldn’t work for him." Lang gave Ghost the impression of a savvy veteran, living like a fox, understanding everything, and in simpler terms, high emotional intelligence. He could manage any relationship well, so his judgment wouldn’t be off.

"Alright then, I’ll wait for you at the hospital tomorrow."

"Okay, let me report back to Mr. Zheng." Lang said and then hung up the phone.

"Ahem, will you be going out for a feast tomorrow?" Suddenly, a voice came from behind Ghost, startling him so much that he nearly dropped his phone. Turning around, he saw Gu Xin looking at him with disdain and a mischievous gaze. The bathroom door had somehow opened, and Ghost realized he was too focused on the conversation. Gu Xin had likely heard the entire discussion, even if she didn’t know all the details. At least she knew someone was inviting him to a banquet, and that someone was referred to as "Mr. Zheng."

"This Zheng Ji, I know him." Gu Xin’s sudden comment left Ghost baffled. Gu Xin was just a nurse, while Zheng Ji was a big deal. How did they know each other?

"Y-you’ve got it wrong, we don’t know each other. Oh no, I know of him; he doesn’t know me," Gu Xin quickly clarified. "Previously, during a hospital meeting, the leader mentioned that Zheng Ji is a major donor for our hospital, annually contributing large sums for purchasing new medical equipment and routine maintenance."

"I’ve heard he’s an entrepreneur from East Sea, quite young, and already worth billions."

Gu Xin shared the information she knew, which was generally correct. Indeed, Zheng Ji was impressive at a young age, despite family influence. However, claiming he’s worth billions is incorrect; it’s likely... trillions. Besides money, he also had many cultivators from the Zheng Family, which money alone couldn’t buy.

"Li, how do you know him?" Before Ghost could respond, Gu Xin asked back.

"Uh, it was by chance, I helped him out, and over time, he got to know me." Ghost didn’t want to disclose matters related to Netherworld Palace, so he found an excuse. After all, it’s not like Gu Xin could verify it.

"Really?" Gu Xin seemed skeptical, "But I also heard Lang’s name. He’s not a good person."

"Come on, with men’s affairs, you wouldn’t understand." Ghost brushed it off. "Don’t worry, Lang is also under Zheng Ji. Since we’re friends, Lang naturally must treat me with respect."

"Ahem, alright. But... why are you keeping this from me? Since you know Zheng Ji, why didn’t you tell me? Are you planning to hide this again?" Gu Xin’s flood of questions left Ghost unable to respond.

"Of course... not at all. It’s just something recent; I planned to tell you sooner or later." Ghost put on a smile. "Since you already know, I’ll go to the banquet tomorrow."

"Hold on." Gu Xin abruptly stopped him "As your girlfriend, can I go?"

"Ah." Ghost exclaimed, surprised that Gu Xin wanted to attend the banquet. But was it really okay? Zheng Ji had only invited him. Even though his fortune was vast, it’s not like he would mind an extra mouth, but... it seemed a bit impolite.

"Why not? After all, you know Zheng Ji. Unless... you have a secret to discuss?" Gu Xin wasn’t satisfied with Ghost’s reaction. If it weren’t a secret, Lang could have simply relayed the message. If it required a face-to-face, it must be something significant.

....................................

The next evening.

Eventually, Ghost couldn’t refuse Gu Xin. Every man in the world can’t go against their girlfriend. Gu Xin wasn’t someone materialistic or who loved petty gains. Even though the restaurant Zheng Ji invited him to served dishes costing as much as the monthly salary of an ordinary white-collar worker in East Sea, Gu Xin wasn’t particularly eager to indulge. Plus, the environment didn’t suit "reckless" dining. Gu Xin preferred being home, gnawing chicken feet, and enjoying BBQ while watching a game. Her only reason for coming this time was to observe Ghost, or rather, spy on Zheng Ji.

Her focus was on the conversations between these two men. Gu Xin didn’t seek vast wealth in life, just wanted to be grounded, living a stable life. She hoped Ghost wouldn’t encounter misfortune again. Unless Zheng Ji valued Ghost’s skills, why would he bother befriending him? In Gu Xin’s mind, Zheng Ji likely wanted to use Ghost’s abilities for "dirty" tasks, offering substantial rewards. Gu Xin would never allow Ghost to do such.

"Welcome, Mr. Gu." As soon as they arrived at the hotel’s entrance, two rows of tall greeters stood on either side, bowing deeply to Ghost. Having regained his memories, he was unfazed, though Gu Xin was quite startled.

"Haha, it’s an honor that Mr. Gu graces us." A person emerged from the main doorway, none other than the eldest son of the Zheng Family, Zheng Ji.

"And this must be... Miss Gu Xin, pleased to meet you."

"Mr. Zheng, we meet again." Ghost responded.

"The wind is strong outside, let’s head in."
