Chapter 50: Aunt Lily

As soon as Dalton escorted Maya back to her room, he immersed himself in work, planning to buy another company. However, he found himself distracted. He wished he knew how to smile, to express the joy in his heart on his face. Just one kiss rattled him to the core. He might go crazy the day he makes love to her.

Dalton’s phone buzzed:She is waiting for you in the living room.

Dalton shut his laptop and went straight to the living room. A tall, elegant middle-aged woman was waiting for him—Maya’s aunt. She looked just like Soraya. Her eyes were poring over her surroundings.

"Your home is lovely," she complimented.

"Thank you. Please, have a seat."

She obliged and sat down, and Dalton followed suit.

"How may I address you?" Dalton asked politely.

"Call me Aunt Lily. Since you’re dating my niece, we’re family now." She smiled at him, and he found himself abandoning his intention to treat her indifferently. She was a warm woman, and he couldn’t sense any deceit from her.

"Alright, you can call me Dalton too."

"You wanted to know my intentions before you let me see her, right?"

"Yes, I don’t trust the people she is close with, including you, unfortunately."

Aunt Lily smiled wryly. "I see you are very protective of her, and I appreciate that. Now I can feel at ease when I’m in Spain, knowing that Maya has someone looking out for her."

"Did you know she was being abused by your brother and nephew?"

Aunt Lily sighed sadly. "I had my suspicions, but my niece knows how to hide scars and bruises. I know they scorn her, but I didn’t realize they went as far as physically abusing her. They treat her normally when I’m around, but the staff started to open up. I realized that Maya must be enduring a great deal of suffering in that house. So, I asked Maya what harmful things were being done to her, but you know how my niece is."

"She didn’t tell you right." Dalton wasn’t surprised. It was typical of Maya to be stubborn and hide things she shouldn’t.

"I wish I had known earlier. Thinking about the terrible things she endured from my brother and nephew breaks my heart," tears welled in Aunt Lily’s eyes.

Dalton went to get a box of tissues and gave it to her.

"Thank you," Aunt Lily said, wiping her tears. "Soraya told me they kidnapped Maya."

"Yes, they physically assaulted her severely and were about to sell her to the highest bidder as a sex slave. Your brother was the one that caused her traumatic brain injury."

"Oh my God!" she sobbed, looking horrified. "How could Fredrick and Terrence do such terrible, inhumane things to Maya?"

"I have failed you, Cecelia, my best friend," Aunt Lily laments. "I promised her I would take care of her baby girl, but I failed to do that. I let them hurt her baby girl." Tears stream down her face as she cries harder.

"You shouldn’t blame yourself for what those bastards did to Maya. It’s not your fault. Maya will be hurt if she learns that you are blaming yourself. You need to pull yourself together. I don’t think you want your niece to see you in this melancholic state."

"You’re right," Aunt Lily wiped any trace of tears from her face. She quickly reapplied her makeup and returned to looking elegant.

"Thank you for your comforting words. You are going to be a good man for my niece," she praised.

Dalton felt flattered. "I will try to be the best man for her."

Aunt Lily smiled. "You are proving that you are."

"Your brother and nephew are dead," Dalton abruptly tells her, turning the atmosphere back to being dreadful

Aunt Lily stiffened. "Did you have them killed?"

Dalton didn’t respond.

"Well, it’s what those scumbags deserve for abusing Maya!" Aunt Lily cried out angrily.

"What about their dead bodies?"

"I had them cremated and threw their ashes into a dumpster."

"Very well. I... was... hoping to give them a proper burial," her voice broke.

"I’m sorry for your loss," Dalton said sympathetically.

She nodded. "I feel awful that I’m sad about their death, even though I shouldn’t be."

"It’s understandable; they are your blood, so it’s normal to feel sad," Dalton comprehends.

"Those scumbags don’t deserve a burial, anyway," she scoffs.

"I will take you to Maya."

"Okay," Aunt Lily said as she stood up and followed Dalton.

••••••

Maya just finished taking her bath and was brushing her hair leisurely, while occasionally touching her lips. Feeling all giddy, she hummed to herself. She wishes she could kiss Dalton every second to experience that rush of firelight she felt when he kissed her.

It was going to be torture waiting to feel Dalton’s lips again. She hoped her recovery would speed up because she needed to kiss her man.

In the meantime, she needed to find something other than reading to pass the time. She had wanted to organize her clothes in the large walk-in closet that now belonged to her, but Dalton had hired live-in staff. One of them Packed and arranged everything in the closet against her wishes.

She is not happy about living in this mansion without doing anything. However, on the other hand, the mansion has become lively since the staff arrived yesterday

"Pumpkin" Aunt Lily walked in.

"Aunt Lily" They hugged tightly. Maya was overjoyed.

"You should have told me you were coming," Maya pointed out.

"I wanted to surprise you,"

Aunt Lily said with a frown. "You look unwell."

Maya grunted in response. "Why is it so obvious that I’m sick?"

"You can’t hide illness. Have you seen a doctor?"

Maya nodded. "Yes. Dalton’s brother is a doctor; he gave me treatment. I didn’t have to go to the hospital."

"Very convenient! The handsome billionaire boyfriend package comes with free health care benefits. My niece has hit the jackpot," Aunt Lily teased.

Maya giggled.

"I approve of him. He is a perfect gentleman. His ruthless, fearsome reputation seems like a façade; he is the opposite of all those attributes they assign to him." Aunt Lily said, totally impressed with Dalton.

"I know, right? He is gentle, sweet, and kind," Maya swooned.

"Aww, you are falling in love with him."

Maya blushed. "I can’t deny that," she is feeling it in her heart.

"I’ve never seen you this happy, Maya. I’m so glad you found him," Aunt Lily beamed.

Maya couldn’t stop grinning. "Yeah, me too. He’s like a light beaming up my world."

"I can tell. I’m happy for you, dear."

Suddenly Maya’s expression turned sour. "My stepfather and Terrence are dead. I’m sorry."

Aunt Lil grasped her hand. "That is their punishment for the terrible things they did to you. Let’s not talk about them anymore. We will leave those scumbags in the past and look forward to the new Chapter of your life. "

Maya took a deep breath. "You are right, Aunt,"

she asked cheerfully, diverting the conversation. "Do you love my new room?"

"Yes, it’s as lovely as your old one," Aunt Lily said.

Aunt Lily stayed for a while to chat with Maya about everything joyful, causing laughter and smiles.

She took her leave when Maya grew tired and needed a nap.

****

Dalton stood by the car, waiting for Aunt Lily. He had decided to drive her back himself.

He could see that spending time with Maya had elevated Aunt Lily’s mood. She was radiating happiness as she walked towards him

"Can you take me to this address?" Aunt Lily asked, flashing her phone screen in Dalton’s face.

"Sure,"

Dalton paused, remembering something. "Why didn’t you take Maya away from your brother?"

Aunt Lily was stunned and caught off guard by the question, but she answered calmly "When she was a baby, I tried to take her with me to Spain, but my brother refused. He said he would raise her himself. Over the years I kept requesting, but each time, he refused. I found it very strange; I thought he might have developed some affection for her, but that seemed unlikely, so I ruled that out."

"He was keeping Maya by his side to abuse her," Dalton interjected.

Aunt Lily shook her head. "Not just that."

"Is there another reason?" he asked.

"Yes. When Maya was 16, I once again insisted on taking her with me to Spain. My brother was semi-drunk that day." She paused and looked at Dalton, then continued speaking.

"Fredrick told me he had an agreement with Maya’s biological father. He agreed to keep Maya until he comes for her on a fixed date."

Dalton’s chest tightened. "Maya’s father wants to take her away?"

"What do you know about her father?" Dalton asked, his mind racing.

"All I know is that he is Italian." Aunt Lily answered.

"I see." Dalton has no choice but to go against Maya’s wish. He is going to find Maya’s biological father first before he comes to take her away from him.
