Chapter 160: A Council Called (Ch.160)

"Dee?" Kaileen called to her mate quietly so as not to startle her.

"Huh?" Dionne was drawn out of her daze by Kaileen’s voice and glanced over her shoulder.

"Oh Dee..." Kaileen breathed a pained sigh as she took note of Dionne’s red and swollen eyes which showed Dionne had been crying.

Dionne’s hand shot up to quickly wipe her tears and she forced a smile to her lips.

"I’m fine... I am." Dionne assured Kaileen as she returned her attention to mixing Zariah’s tonic as Nile had directed.

Dionne was not very good at lying and so the moment Kaileen rested a hand on her shoulder, she broke down into quiet sobs.

"I should have been by her side... I am Zariah’s honor guard. I took an oath to protect her...an oath I have failed terribly at keeping." Dionne croaked out.

Kaileen breathed a shaky sigh as her hands went around Dionne’s waist and Kaileen rested her head against Dionne’s back.

Dionne was always the strong one, the unyielding warrior with a cold and blunt personality, it was rare that Kaileen found her mate in such a state.

But Kaileen had known it was long coming, Kaileen herself had cried all her tears this past month but all the while, Dionne had somehow kept up a strong front.

But as time went by, it grew harder and harder for anyone to act like everything was okay.

"We are doing all we can, beloved. And we just have to keep doing that. Our earnest care will bring Zariah back to us, you’ll see." Kaileen assured quietly, placing a soft kiss on Dionne’s neck.

Kaileen’s kiss lingered for a moment before she pulled away and leaned up on her toes, placing another kiss just beneath Dionne’s ear.

Dionne breathed out a shaky sigh as she placed down the tonic and turned around, pecking Kaileen lightly on the lips.

"We have run out of herbs and Nile has shut his doors in meditation for the past few days, I will go fetch it from the High Oracle." Dionne said.

"Very well, go on. I will feed the tonic to Zariah today." Kaileen assured her mate with a sad smile.

Dionne returned the smile before she took her leave, heading down the halls of the Ethereal Palace to the high oracle’s quarters.

In Zariah’s absence, Dionne had reluctantly familiarized herself with the layout of the Ethereal Palace.

It was all Dionne could do when she and Kaileen were the only two Crimson wolves to have stayed back in the Ethereal Palace.

Ever since the departure of the Ethereal Alphas, the Ethereal Palace had gone quiet and Dionne was thankful for it.

With Zariah’s state, Dionne found she was always on desperate need of a clear head and she could finally understand why Nile was always meditating.

Dionne took a turn at the end of the hall, the high oracle’s quarters was in the hall were most of the high ranked wolves of the Royal Lycan Pack resided.

Dionne had not come down here before, but she had a vague idea of where she could find the high oracle.

As Dionne walked, her ears twitched as she picked up sounds of quiet voices from somewhere down the hallway.

The voices could have belonged to anyone and so Dionne paid them no mind, continuing on her way.

She was just about to walk past the hall from which she could hear the voices and Dionne heard the mention of a familiar title.

"Now that the Crimson Alpha is in such a condition, we must have His Grace take another mate." Said the voice.

Dionne paused in her step, her gaze narrowed slightly and her hands clenched into fists as she backtracked, heading back to the hall.

Dionne stopped outside the double doors that were only slightly opened and peered within, her gaze narrowing even more to find the high ranked wolves of the Royal Lycan Pack seated around a table.

It was not just one or two of them, all the elders of the pack were present there and Dionne took note of the fact that the only missing faces were that of King Askel and his immediate subordinates.

The high oracle was also present in the hall while an elder Dionne could not recognize addressed the rest.

"Have none of us considered what it would mean for the Royal Lycan Pack if we allowed the Crimson wolves take power in our own territory? Lest we forget...our two packs cannot coexist in the same territory." The elder continued.

"Recall the times after the dark war, when the Crimson Moon Pack exercised supremacy over our race. If we allow it, the Royal Lycans will be sidelined in favor of the Crimson wolves."

"Never have I seen two suns dominate a single sky... never have I seen two Kings share a single throne. The rightful place of the Crimson wolves is beyond their barrier."

"We extended a cordial invite in honor of our King’s enthronement, now that the event is passed, all should return to it’s rightful place." The elder continued with conviction.

"Elder Jared, the Crimson Alpha and our king are true mates. Are you suggesting we entreat our king to reject his mate and bond another?" The high oracle asked in bafflement.

"Yes, I do know how it sounds. It is against our values as wolf shifters and as a pack. But would a bond with the Crimson wolves be to our favor?" Elder Jared asked.

"The Crimson wolves are rightfully the greatest power in the realm. Would there be a need for us to contend with this? Even interfere with the Alpha King’s choice in a mate?" Another Elder asked.

"Then you must also decide here and now if the Ethereal King’s heir shall bear the title of Ethereal King...or Crimson Alpha."

"If the Royal Lycan Pack shall deliver it’s supremacy at the feet of the Crimson Alpha as she takes the crown of Ethereal Queen..." Elder Jared questioned.
